It felt like the game was going for a serious sam approach by llockingyou in an arena, instead of having you fight through hoards like in the first three dooms.

If you seriously want to compare it to serious sam, then lets get serious. Becuas I fucking love Serious Sam and its not really like it much aside from the fact that they both do rely on arenas undeniably. The difference is DOOM uses areneas similarly too how the original did, although the original didn't use literal lockdowns it did have arenas wherein the player isn't expected to leave and a challening large amount of enemies spawn. Serious Sam is comparable to a straight line that paces itself with progressing combat encounters, room gimicks, and inventory managment to make up for its simplistic level design. Which isn't a problem when the combat is interesting enough to carry the game. DOOM doesn't take this approach at all, if you actually pay attention to the level design it takes cues from Doom in most apects and the player is MOSTLY free to explore the level in different orders (until the last few levels which are admittedly arena after arena but still have good filler in between) People mostly generalize but if you honestly compare the level design you would never see pic related in a Serious Sam map.

Does the game get better? I'm a few hours in and the game is pretty boring
