The game is literally about samsara and I'm pretty sure the crazy french guy who made it had The (not a, but THE) mystical experience that gave him the interesting enough perspective to make the game so in the first place. It's literally all about enlightenment and escaping the cycles of samsara through insight and mindfullnes, the mysterious dude at the end of every ending always asks if you paid attention during your journey, and then the 4th ending where you sit on the island is literally choosing parinirvana instead of being reborn and continuing the cycles. The details for the most part seem to mean jack shit other than that he never is going to save his wife and stuff.

Unless you're not sure, yes, you're Rimanah and the Rimanah you encounter is a figment of your player character's imagination, same with Dutch I'm pretty sure. Nobody stops you from talking to yourself though because you're the heckin commander, even though if you talk to everybody they do comment on you talking to yourself all the time.
