Thanks man, fuck KT really did a number on this port, its slapped together so poorly and could have ran and looked so much better, at least Ragnar and Malroth are cool.
What I gathered from seeing all the version is that the world itself is from the PS3 version with some textures slightly better, the models are from the PS4 version unless you undock it, and the lighting is a dumbed down version of the PS4's lighting missing many effects.
It just gets me mad knowing it could have been so much better.

This is probably my favorite little thing about this port, the lack of fence.
I feel like the game has been ripping me apart, I'm around level thirty and just finished the boss where you play as a cyclops, but enemies are still tearing me to shreds.
To make it worse I've been using Jessica as a healer due to her having crazy healing power at least in this version but for whatever reason she cant regenerate MP.
For those of you wondering Ragnar's gimmick is that he has no MP and can use special moves as often as he likes but they are generally slow to start, he's also a post game character from what people said.

Has anyone here gotten to the point in Heroes 2 where you start getting those super weapons from the Post Game dungeon maps? Are the later ones a guaranteed weapon drop? I've been doing the one with the bandits and have a fairly decent drop rate for how fast I can finish it. Also having to rely on a drop just for a chance at getting a weapon you want sucks ass, going for the 100% in this game is going to be a real pain.

The reason is literally because the person in charge of localization decided he was tired of plain straight to english translations and wanted to mix it up.
He also apparently wrote a localization bible for the series before he left Square and so now every Dragon Quest game has to have accents. Unless it's the first three games, then they get Ye Olde Englishe.

From 4 onward, are the DS/3DS releases considered the best? I've only played through 1 and 8(PS2) so far and I'm working my way through 2. The one I'm most unsure about is 5 since the PS2 version looks nicer from what I've seen but the DS version would be portable and has a charm of its own. Either way I'll be playing it in Japanese so any localization issues don't apply.

Switch owner here, its runs like ass, sub 30 in most combat sections and generally doesn't look that great being a mished mashed port of assets from ps3 and ps4, if you want it get it for PC at a cheaper price but if you want it on switch that badly wait for it to hopefully get patched, there were listing for an english release published by Nintendo so maybe they'll fix it for that release.

Switch should be able to handle DQH2 no problem. But they decided to rush it out rather than take some time to optimize.

I'm not that anon and obviously I don't speak for everyone who started with DQ8, but I started with DQ8 and I went on to play all the DQ games. I've beated 1, 2, and 4-9. I've played 3 until Alefgard, but I lost my save and I haven't really played it since. All of the games are pretty good, but 1 and 2 are the most dated.

I should say I'm glad I didn't pay full retail because it is a mild PC port not because of the game itself. I'm digging it so far.

I had two issues only. One it hangs at 55fps. Some sort of GPU bottleneck. The fix is running a paused youtube vid in the background and I get solid 60fps. You have to force AA/filtering through your GPU since there's no in-game option. Aside from those if you have a supported resolution it should be great.

Zelda kinda needed that change though. Nintendo has shown that they don't know what to do with Zelda anymore, and they kept trying to change things up while keeping it the same which ended badly. Dragon Quest feels fine to me. Though I've been playing Zelda since the 90s and DQ since 2015, so maybe that's why I'm not tired of the, yet despite playing I-IX.

They tried to turn IX into an ARPG or something, but fans across Japan became furious, so they made it turn-based again. DQ has some nice under the hood changes, but Japanese fans will keep it from becoming too different, for better or worse.

7 is by no means the best in the series. That would be 5. 7 is waaaaaaaaayyyyyy wayyy wayyy to long, with large expanses of the exact same looking NPCs giving you fetch quests and a lot of backtracking. Amd this is coming from someone who loved 7 and maxed out each character to champion, but I will never play it through again. Honestly the game is fine, it has tons of problems that could be fixed but its still fun as a good simple action game.
I think its crazy when you realize how much Koei Tecmo tried their hardest to push HW's visuals and enemy counts on the Wii U to eventually hit this low and then go to the nintendo investor meeting promising new exclusives and how great Koei games run on Switch.

These are the only major mechanics changes in that entire list.

I've been playing it for the past week. I think I'm close to finishing it. I can't decide on a specific team, since everyone is pretty fun to use. Currently I've been using Lazarel, Jessica, Ruff, and Terry.

I sometimes switch out Ruff or Terry, for Carver or Ceaser. Tried out Angelo but his attacks aren't very strong. The Oomph buff he has is nice though.
I think it's better then the first game, but hate that they replaced Yangus with Angelo. Also no Psaro.

III is definitely excellent, maybe my third or second favorite behind VII and maybe IV. My only real problem is the orb quest can be a bit cryptic and annoying to figure some of the orb's location but other then it is true jrpg goodness. SFC version is the absolute best, playing any other version doesn't feel as grand with it;s beautiful art and music.

Yes, but the versions are a bit different. The 3ds version has a "retro" mode that makes it resemble the snes/ps1 look more. Though both games follow the exact same events, this is basically confirmed as saves are transferable between the ps4 and 3ds version. Basically you can move your ps4 version, move your save to the 3ds, play a bit on there, and put the progress you made on your ps4 version.

Actually that isn't the case, they are trying to come up with a system to allow save transfer but Nintendo and Sony refuse to allow you to connect a 3DS to a PS4, so they are trying to find a work around.

I kept a pretty good text document of what people were saying while I played so I don't think I ever got TOO stuck.

I like III more than any other of them, but on a pure personal basis I really like VI too.

I still remember fighting the final boss and having a real tough time and it was so long before I remembered I had the orb and could make it a lot easier with it (I only noticed I had it because I was in my inventory to use the sage's stone). After that it was a lot easier but I like to think I could've beat it without the orb, it was going well. I had two fuckin sages dude.

Just got the Plat on DQH1 a few months ago, giving it some time before I dive into this one. Had a great time with it though.

I might have been in the near 70's dude, I was fucking stacked out, I did a lot of grinding to get those sages to good levels. With the sage's stone you get fuckin free heals so I just had one guy dedicated to constant heals and kept attacking. If it got too bad when had full party heals too, and I think I had a few prayer rings to get MP back too.

It was close at times though, the mass attack spells were brutal when he did them twice in a row but I swear on my life I did fight for a long time before I remembered the orb. It was pretty fun and it got a a bit boring when I actually did lower his shield.

How is XI shaping up?

I've only played I, II, and VIII. I like the series but the lack of character customization makes things eventually grow boring.

I wish VIII had more abilities or character customization beyond dumping points into a weapon stat, as I was getting bored ~50 hours in. Does XI do anything different?

You dodged the games that actually allow character customization, at least as far as jobs go. III, VI, VII, and IX. V also has a lot of party customization since you just recruit monsters and use them (though there are human party members too).

In dqh2 is there any reason not to have the second cousin specd to priest as healslut? never bothered with kryil or whatever and meena needs all her slots for those sweet debuffs. Mc+priest cousin + meena + Cesar is a pretty good team. I like to use carver for online tho. Love clearing areas with charged sweeps and kicks.

DQ4 is debatable with some people. DS has more content and much better QoL but the accents is so fucking awful. NES might be a bit too old school for most but the localization is honestly great. After that yeah the remakes are the best to play. The only issue DQ8 has is that there's a few censorship because of how Japanese rating system changed but I personally didn't mind them like others.

The only thing we did get recently is the Vita of Heroes which sucks but I really don't think they will not give us Builders 2 if it comes on Switch. God Builders was such a enjoyable game. The only issue I had was that it was annoying starting over each chapter but the idea of having to leave everyone to help the rest of the world made up for it.
