Because hearing is the only sense you use in vidya besides your eyes

What's the point of a 4k screen and top of the line GPU is you're gonna ruin your experience with a """"""gayman"""""" headset instead of spending a proportionate amount of money on your audio experience

On top of that you can actually get a good pair of headphones for less than most generic (((headset)))s so price isn't even an argument

>>
Buy a pair of powered studio monitors for the best experience. Then buy any cheap pair of headphones, $80-200, you won't be using them often anyway. "Surround" headphones actually make a difference because games today are autistic and directional sound has gone down the shitter. But again you'll be using the monitors 99% of the time anyway. And you almost can't go wrong with studio monitors either so its easier.
>>
>>375606135

Not all 'gaming' headsets are shit. I do know where the logic comes from, and it's mostly correct, although outdated information.

Sennheiser, for one, makes beast headsets. The Cloud from HyperX is based on one of the older designs of the former, and it's pretty good.

Anything Razer is shit tho

I bought the Sennheiser HD555 for 80 Euros some years ago, and they have the exact same hardware as the 200 Euro HD595 except they added some tape to make it worse (so they only manufacture one model and sell it at two different prices).

Removing the tape to turn them into HD595s required me to remove like 2 screws or something, that was it

I bought replacement pads for them 2 years ago and I haven't been using them as much lately due to job so they look brand new right now
>>
>>375606335

I've always wondered whether these are simply hated because of the brand name and what they represent, or because they're genuinely shit headphones. I know Dre hasn't really been relevant in many years, but surely he wouldn't put his name on something that's complete trash, right?

The only model they make that doesn't measure like absolute dogshit is the Solo 2/3. These are actually decent, especially the 3 given how good the wireless is and the battery life.
Everything else they make is objectively bad though.
>>
>>375608179
Overpriced, bass heavy. IIRC the $300 Beats barely compare to $150 Skullcandy Aviators in terms of hardware like "driver size" and other stuff. That and they just make you look like a fucking tool.

You might be on to something. I've read many good things about the 555 and how they're comfy, and somehow they don't cost several hundred dollars, which is what I thought they'd be. How's the sound? I'm looking for something to use for gaming, so I don't need 100% neutral audiophile grade accuracy, but rather something that sounds good with the lasers, explosions, fireballs and all the other vidya noises.
>>
>>375608179
He actually had no hand in making them which is weird, he wanted to make headphones that are legit good. Closest was Solo 2 in 2014.

I wonder what Kendrick branded headphones would be like.
>>
>>375608234
This used to be me with $80 to $150 gaming headsets. Eventually went in on some Skullcandy Aviators, a usb sound card with a mic in it, and I'm setting money aside for a nice desk mic. I've had my headphones for at least 6 years and the padding is starting to go though. Physically hurts and sometimes bruises my ears if I wear them too long now. Whomp whomp

Sennheiser headphones have replaceable padding. It's great.

Also: for a cheap, but quality standalone mic check out the behringer B1.
>>
>>375605364
I bought a pair of these when I didn't have access to my 595s. They're OK but the clamping force is quite high and they're not anywhere close to the Sennheisers in terms of being comfortable and unnoticeable/forgetting you even have them on.

Bass is much better, though overall I think I still prefer the clearer, more open sound of the Sennheisers.

If you even need it. I've had mine for 6 years now and the velour padding is still comfortable and not even particularly disgusting.

If they're positioned slightly off I can just about get a hint of my ear touching the inside of the cup but that's as bad it gets.
>>

>>
>>375609067
I do as well. My current ones have a detachable cable which I hope will make it live a bit longer though since that's usually the biggest problem for me.

Already stocked up on a bunch of cheap 1 dollar Chinese 3-5mm cables.
>>
>>375609290
Pretty much, but in the event you DO need them: you can replace them for $20 or so rather than buying an entirely new set of cans.
>>
>>375608551
They sound great.

And if you want the same thing with a mic there's the PC 363D, although these are slightly less comfortable (they fit tighter) and I don't know about the durability as mine are new, but the plastic looks cheaper to me than the build of my 555s.

They're a meme because they're so popular so it's cool to hate them now. But they're popular for a reason, they sound great. In terms of quality the line goes M70>M50>M40 etc. You'll have a hard time finding a better sounding set of closed backs, but the DT770s are also pretty good. They'll never sound as good as open-backed phones though

Doesn't sound much better than my onboard (which is in the top-tier of amplified mobo chips) but having a physical volume knob just makes everything so much simpler. Dude 555 is fucking ancient and so is 595, you won't find them anywhere. Even 598 and 558 (released at the same time, not successors) are now discontinued though you might be still able to find them (maybe even cheap if there's an outlet or something.)

If you want the current edition of the Sennheiser memephones it's 559/579/599. I haven't tried them but I kind of doubt there would be a significant difference to the predecessors.

As I understand it the timeline is something like:
555 -> 558 -> 559
and the more expensive edition:
595 -> 598 -> 599

Not sure where 579 fits in or what it's about. I have feeling there's not a humongous difference between any of these and you'd probably be happy with any of them.
>>
>>375612548
I sure do hope that people realize just how relatively shit electronic technology was back in the day, and that any "authentic" WW2 era headphones would sound like complete shit compared to modern day stuff. Which is why I'm guessing that the insides have nothing in common with actual WW2 radio operator headphones and only the looks have been copied, in order to attract all the hipster audiophile retards. But hey, they've got 50$ worth of electronics and 2$ worth of wood and lacquer on them, so I guess that means they're great and worth over a grand.
>>
>>375612969
I figured as much. I'm just wondering why the 59X series cost more, despite having seemingly the same components and specs. Must be the leather and velour.
>>
>>375613193
I've seen references that they're very similar apart from a small gimping piece of foam in the cups of the cheaper ones. I believe there's still a slight difference in the actual electronics, but probably nothing major.

Is it worth getting a Hyper x cloud to replace it?(just the regular 1 or 2).
I've heard they're decent and aren't too expensive. I rarely use a mic anyway but I want a small one just in case.

for the money of a yett you could buy an audiotechnica usb mic thats much better.

good pick on the headphones though, if your not using and interface make sure to buy the 32ohm verison, the 250 and higher versions will require some kind of amp

So I've got the Senn HD650s, DT880 600ohm, AKG K7XX for the mid-range tier. If I'm at my desktop I'm using my Lyr amp normally and all three of these cans sound great, however I have to say the AKG K7XX is the best sounding and most comfortable. The DT880s coming in next primarily due to comfort and sound stage. The HD650s definitely are not bad at all, I could easily have kept using them for years if someone hadn't gifted me another set. Prior to any of these I had those god awful M50x, now those are some cheap chink shit cans, avoid them.

Any way you go, you'll be pretty happy if you have a decent amp to drive em. All said and done, if you truly, absolutely love your music... Save up and get some Stax. There isn't anything better unless you're among the ultra rich.

If you want more details, check out Z reviews, guy gives some pretty good reviews on tons of audio shit.

People like him as a person and content creator, everyone says he has ear problems and shouldn't be trusted for audio reviews. His opinions on build quality and headphone pads are good. I wear Grados but lets not pretend they are the easy choice. No one should buy Grados without testing as for a lot of people the high notes are harsh and cause fatigue. Also they are about as uncomfortable as a 350$ pair of head phones can possibly be, so you need to be willing to mod them if you plan to listen to them while gaming out.

Furthermore Grado's don't even bring out the best for Hip Hop. If he's a Hip Hop guy he can pick something warmer, or a V profile instead of Grado's bright sound and get likely get better results.

Goldenears, but only the korean site.
The english site translates the korean measurements but hasn't updated in years.
Head-Fi has a tool that will let you compare graphs between headphones, but it's Head-Fi.
Inner Fidelity also does measurements but Tyl is a weird sperg.

Do note that even audio engineers will admit charts and shit are more or less useless, since they can't account for your individual ear shape.
>>
>>375640463
I had two of them. They started to feel loose on my head after a short time, then they fell off whenever I bent my head forward. Their frequency response is fucked: boosted midbass, weak subbass, recessed mids.

The real queens for gaming are open AKG headphones. I've been using K702 for almost a year, it's so easy to hear things and steps on them, they're great for fpa games. AKG K612 is about €100 on Amazon.it right now, for that price it's an absolute steal.

anyone tried Bell'o digital? A store nearby sells them at a good price, and they sound good, but I've never tested them rigorously. Also, every single one I've had has eventually gone deaf, always because the cord somehow got kinked, or the audio plug got worn or something, to the point where I'd have to jiggle it for minutes before getting sound in both ears. It's kind of a shame for still-working headphones to get wrecked that way. Is this a common thing?
