The reason why this art style is extremely popular is because it holds up.

Pic related's a game from 2002 and probably the inventor of the whole cel-shaded anime artstyle in JRPGs and it looks completely fine even by today's standards.

Then you have Xenoblade, which by 2010's standards was already lagging behind and in 2017 it hasn't aged at all.

Cel-shaded anime artstyles are literally built to last. XB2 may look generic but it will still look good 20-30 years from now solely because it's style over graphics.

Eh. Xenoblade's character design was never really that original to begin with, but it did stand out lately witch FF ditching the aesthetic after FF12.
