Same upgrades, maybe a new beam or missile type if they're feeling fancy. Obviously a new map, recycle the same biomes as usual. No one gives a fuck about the story, the less exposition and cutscenes the better.

They could release Super Metroid HD which would be the same exact game with better graphics and it wouldn't be stale. It is an intrinsic property of Metroid games that they don't get stale. Metroid fans will readily go back and play almost any game in the series to completion at the drop of a hat.

That's the problem with alot of Nintendo games. They're meant to be family friendly, as in everyone of all ages can hop in and have fun. This is why their games need more difficulty options. This way little Jimmy can have fun on easy mode, while big Jim can rip his eyes out playing on the hardest difficulty, and everyone is sated. Making games just for children is the Call of Duty method of game design, where you make things as superficial as possible, or making them "edgy" and "mature" because that's the "in" thing right now for kids. It's why a series like Kirby could be considered more mature than a series like God of War. Their perceptions of maturity are different, but one has a slightly better grasp on it.

When someone says they want a new game in X franchise, they mean a good game. Not a spin off. Not a shovelware tier soccer game with a singleplayer mode where you kill the protagonist from the main series. A straight up good, quality, game in said franchise.

Problem is this costs a bit of money time and effort. Three things Nintendo does not like to do unless it's a franchise that sells on name alone. So no matter how good the games in an old franchise used to be, if Nintendo can't churn that shit out quick and effortless and not half ass some marketing for it, they won't bother.

So yes, Nintendo should make proper decent sequels in various fan-demanded franchises. Doesn't mean they will or would do it properly.

Also don't give me that "games have to sell gorrilions of copies to be worth making". That is true that a game has to sell a certain amount, but if a bunch of other lesser known companies can make quality products on a fixed budget that please their core audiences while making them a profit, Nintendo could too. Especially with their dick riding fanbase that'll buy anything. Thing is if it's insanely good other people than just drones would take notice too.
