Joker got slammed with a falsified assault charge by a corrupt politician.
Ryuji had his leg broken ruining his promising track career when he snapped at an abusive teacher.
Ann was made to suffer under the sexual advances of that same teacher along with her best friend who had to deal with the outright physical abuse too.
Yusuke was used as a meal ticket while in a position of dependency, leaving him feeling indebted to his abuser.
Makoto was put upon with the unrealistic expectations of authority figures, utterly destroying her self worth when she was unable to rise to them.
Futaba was used as a scapegoat in the murder of her own mother, leaving her to suffer for years under the abuse of angered family and her own irrational self-hatred.
And Haru got to watch her father become increasingly corrupted by his own drive for success to the point he went from a positive figure in her life, to selling her to an predatory abuser, culminating in his very public execution.

Comparatively, the casts of P3 and P4 were in far less oppressive circumstances, able to enjoy life besides the situations they put themselves in voluntarily out of a belief they could do some good.

I've always firmly believed Joker, when he isnt in the metaverse, is this stressed out highschooler who is trying to act like a regular teenager but is forced to take multiple jobs, listen to other peoples problems, and basically plan out and provide for when they actually go into the metaverse. The party leaves all of the items and equipment to joker as well as when they actually go into the metaverse and send calling cards. He basically has to keep himself outta trouble but is also helping a former yakuza, a shady doctor, and an unpopular politician. If he makes a wrong step he could get reported and sent to juvie, ending the phantom thieves essentially.This on top of school and exams makes for one stressed out dude. His velvet room is also a prison.

When he puts on the mask and becomes Joker he is letting loose, even the other members say that fighting shadows is great stress relief.
