Obligatory Snow Crash Character Action game by Platinum post.
>>
>>375518196
This would be a great book if it was just about Kaladin. Le quirky headstrong young girl and 'muh honor' old man are seriously shit characters. I hate this new trend in fantasy for ramming your book full of characters and shitty politics just so you can pad it out to 1k words a book in you twelve-volume saga.
>>
>>375518196
that bitch in the library is boring as fuck
>>
Fuck everyone but Kaladin.
I only care about Kaladin.

Damn you asshole stop making this a multi-character series.

Fuck Shallan.
Dalinar is okay. So is his son.
But Kaladin is who I want the story to focus on.
>>

Dalinar was great you fag.
I agree on Shallan though

So far it is boring and generic fantasy story#2711
>>
>>375518736
You are just getting to the good stuff.

Fucking Demon Cycle ruined the entire fantasygenre storytelling.
>>

Dalinar is alright.
>>375518736
Drop it now. These books are low-depth entertainment.
>>
Mistborn would be a great game.
The Reckoners saga would be a great movie series as well as a good game.
>>
>>375518848
I'll take your word for it.
The bridgeruns and hunt were the best parts.
I don't want to read anymore of >muh books and strong Jasnah
>>
>>375519049

I'm sorry that does not get better before book 2, and still then she is pretty boring.

Gonna finish the first one and never start the second one if that is the case.
>>
>>375519049

You're like me. Bridge parts are great.

But the second book is going to focus on Jasnah and Shallan.
Sorry. But Kaladin does get a hype moment in the second book as well.
>>
>>375518736
It's Sanderson. What the fuck did you expect?

The man literally built his career off boring and generic fantasy stories with somewhat interesting magic systems.

He was okay yeah, it's just that his arc was so fuckin' predictable in this new age of edgy as fuck fantasy. Only at the very end where he managed to not die and still showed respect to his old friend did I find it vaguely interesting - I would have been seriously pissed if it had just been Ned Stark 2.0.
>>

How about this ?
Could be an amazing RTS in which you are forced to learn about the 13 lections by doing campaign missions. In each chapter you have to use one of the chapters to its fullest potential in order to win.

If nothing else, there is a lot of variety in it.

I really want to like The Black Company but I'm having a really hard time doing it. Am I doing something wrong? Like the story is interesting when you look at it as a whole, but after the first however many hundred pages of the first book it just felt like it was dragging. I liked what was happening, when I think of the story in my head I think it's cool, but the way its presented feels so slow and boring. The writing seems odd to me and the characters almost feel like they don't have real personalities.

The MC is fucking god-awful, a self-insert of the worst variety. Inifintely intelligent, strong, dexterous, charming, can do no wrong, etc. You nailed it on the head with the antagonists. I liked his prose but that's about all I can say. I had to drop it halfway through the second book. Also, I had to avert my eyes during every fucking romance scene, you'd figure the author had never had a conversation with a human woman before.

Really don't get the praise for those books. Is it the cool magic system?

Try to think of it through Croaker's perspective. He's the Annalist and he's writing down stuff about the people he works with everyday. Their personalities will start to show, the second book especially.

I hate to say, "just stick with it" but Cook hit his mark with the second book.

I kind of approach it with that attitude that I'm reading someone else's account, and that did help as I was reading through the first book, but I still feel there are other stories out there that do that same sort of perspective better. I will take your word for it, though. I have the omnibus edition or whatever that has like the first 3 books in it, so I plan to at least finish that entire volume. I think the second book starts getting it right because you see Marron Shed go through a great character arc. One problem I had with the first book was Cook's tendency to make a place sound storied by giving it an important name and not expand upon it.

I know that Helldivers exist, but that one focuses on the movie, not the book. It's like saying Left 4 dead was inspired by the War Z.

Kaladin is way more sue than Shallan is any day.

Shallan screws up a lot and makes mistakes and is only really skilled in a few areas.

Kaladin is fucking perfect tactician/solider/leader/surgeon who never makes mistakes but has bad luck instead and just slams his fists screaming "IT NEVER GETS ANY EASIER, TAKE ME INSTEAD" melodrama every time any random person dies.

Still love the books but Kaladin is by far the weakest character. Get the "muh women characters" stick out of your ass.

>Also, I had to avert my eyes during every fucking romance scene, you'd figure the author had never had a conversation with a human woman before.

Which just makes this bit all the more hilarious:

>In high-school Pat was something of a class clown. His hobbies included reading a novel or two a day and giving relationship advice to all his friends despite the fact that he had never so much as kissed a girl. He also role-played and wrote terrible stories about elves. He was pretty much a geek.

>For the next seven years Pat studied anthropology, philosophy, eastern religions, history, alchemy, parapsychology, literature, and writing. He studied six different martial arts, practiced improv comedy, learned how to pick locks, and became a skilled lover of women. He also began writing a satirical advice column which he continues to this day: The College Survivial Guide. Through all of this he continued to work on his novel.

>Now Pat teaches half-time at his old school as an assistant-sub-lecturer. He is underpaid but generally left alone to do as he sees fit with his classes. He is advisor for the college feminists, the fencing club, and, oddly enough, a sorority. He still roll-plays occasionally, but now he does it in an extremely sophisticated, debonair way.
>>
>>375520175

I can't promise his prose improves any. Really what I've enjoyed most about is just the characters and seeing the large plots unfold. If you're having trouble because of the prose I'm not going to sit here and promise you it will get better. Personally I didn't mind it, but I completely understand what you mean.

The whole "pirate adventure" part of the second book felt unneeded and a bit out of place, though it did have its moments. Really my favorite part of the second book was all about trying to steal the money from what's his face in his tower. The 3rd books "big heist" is a really interesting idea that I really enjoyed, I loved seeing how Locke and Jean approached it. The big "twist" to the end of the plot was kind of eh, but still cool. The ending of the 3rd story REALLY makes you want the 4th, as it's a major cliffhanger that you really want resolved. The worst part about the 3rd book are the flashback chapters though, it's just a story about the Gentleman Bastards putting on a play in a different city. I understand its importance in the story as a whole, but it feels like you could have skipped 80% of those chapters and been completely fine.

And he wrote this:

>None were good enough for her, so I held them in contempt and hated them. They in turn hated and feared me.

>But we were pleasant to each other. Always pleasant. It was a game of sorts. He would invite me to sit, and I would buy him a drink. The three of us would talk, and his eyes would slowly grow dark as he watched her smile toward me. His mouth would narrow as he listened to the laughter that leapt from her as I joked, spun stories, sang...

>They would always react the same way, trying to prove ownership of her in small ways. Holding her hand, a kiss, a too-casual touch along her shoulder.

>They clung to her with desperate determination. Some of them merely resented my presence, saw me as a rival. But others had a frightened knowledge buried deep behind their eyes from the beginning. They knew she was leaving, and they didn't know why. So they clutched at her like shipwrecked sailors, clinging to the rocks despite the fact that they are being battered to death against them. I almost felt sorry for them. Almost.

>So they hated me, and it shone in their eyes when Denna wasn't looking. I would offer to buy another round of drinks, but he would insist, and I would graciously accept, and thank him, and smile.

>I have known her longer, my smile said. True, you have been inside the circle of her arms, tasted her mouth, felt the warmth of her, and that is something I have never had. But there is a part of her that is only for me. You cannot touch it, no matter how hard you might try. And after she has left you I will still be here, making her laugh. My light shining in her. I will still be here long after she has forgotten your name.

Literally nothing will ever compare to this:

>"Know, oh prince, that between the years when the oceans drank Atlantis and the gleaming cities, and the years of the rise of the Sons of Aryas, there was an age undreamed of, when shining kingdoms lay spread across the world like blue mantles beneath the stars– Nemedia, Ophir, Brythunia, Hyperborea, Zamora with its dark-haired women and towers of spider-haunted mystery, Zingara with its chivalry, Koth that bordered on the pastoral lands of Shem, Stygia with its shadow-guarded tombs, Hyrkania whose riders wore steel and silk and gold. But the proudest kingdom of the world was Aquilonia, reigning supreme in the dreaming west. Hither came Conan, the Cimmerian, black-haired, sullen-eyed, sword in hand, a thief, a reaver, a slayer, with gigantic melancholies and gigantic mirth, to tread the jeweled thrones of the Earth under his sandalled feet." –The Nemedian Chronicles.

First book falls apart as far as heisting goes fairly early on and turns into two of the characters being on the run constantly.

Second book is all Pirates!

And all that chosen one shit in Republic of Thieves was already plenty apparent in the first book, at least that's how I feel in hindsight about it.

Also I fucking loathe the flashbacks. They are the only fun and interesting parts because they actually deal with conning and scamming, but goddamnit they should have been their own series. Having them as flashbacks and interludes absolutely butchers the pacing.

I love what the books could have been and I keep reading them because they are never quite bad enough to make me quit.

Give your characters flaws. Note that being an immortal half-demon isn't a flaw, being prideful or arrogant is. The key is that the flaw must work against the character. Having them be arrogant and then have everything go according to keikaku defeats the purpose.

Don't write like you're trying to wow the reader with every sentence. Sometimes a scene is just a scene, and it doesn't need twelve paragraphs and a thesaurus to describe.

Actually plan out your story to create consistency. I once read a Deus Ex/Mass Effect crossover that had been written over five years and it fucking showed how the author just inserted whatever game he was playing at the time into the plot to create a tangled mess of a setting.

The problem with fantasy is that it always devolves into that if a series goes on for long enough since it's the only way for an author to up the ante.

The Mistborn magic system is basically meant for a video game.

Casting spells without a mana bar, and instead using whatever is in your bag, is a neat concept. Makes money much more valuable, as it often is useless in games.

Ok I'm going to spoil the ending of the first book for you, so just skip this paragraph if you care, even though it's really not a big spoiler (which is why I'm not bothering to spoiler it). He was being influenced by a spellcaster for the last several years to be insane and act incredibly violent, to further that spellcaster and his Lord's goals. He was a puppet being used by someone else. In the second book he's always second guessing his actions and wondering if they're really his own choices, and begins to show more compassion and be less edgy.

Yes the MC comes off as super edgy, and the first book kind of it, but part of the idea is that the MC is a sociopath, and I think the author actually does a good job of portraying that in the stories, once you realize the twist at the end of the first book. The second and third books are definitely much better in terms of "edgyness," and it's not needlessly edgy like The Night Angel by Brent Weeks, as seen above.

Also the setting is really cool, and some of the side characters are pretty enjoyable.

Yeah, I'm trying to decide if I'm going to be a taker on his new thing. Might pass as it's a chick assassin who goes to assassin school. Is it really a self-insert though? I thought the whole point of the story was that Kvothe is a very talented idiot. He's been brought up in a troupe and has a very theatrical, dramatical view of life. You can see it in his relationship with Denna, and his friends point out that their affair is plain stupid.
This whole thing is probably a big build-up of Denna betraying him in the third book where his idiocity finally pays off.

How exactly is he a mary sue?
He spend his entire childhood training to become a doctor and basic sword fighting before he went on war, got drafted at 15, then he spend few years fighting in a war, then few years leading his own unit. By the time hes a slave he has more than enough reason to be a great leader and warrior. Hes in his early twenties but he didnt exactly start his soldier career at 18.

He's a better surgeon than people who are professional surgeons(he a number of times complains about the poor job other surgeons have done) despite the fact that he really only spent a few years learning under his dad and never actually went to school for it.

He's a better fighter than nobles who have all the time and money in the world to hire professional weapons masters to train them. Where as Kaladin only ever had a few years, maybe 3 of self taught or taught by peasant drill sergeants.

He's a master tactician and leader after only a few years of military service.

No single person in their early twenties could be this proficient at this many subjects. Olympians spend their entire lives to perfect a task by their late teens to mid twenties. Kaladin has done that in regards to his spear fighting. Basically what Adolin has spent his whole life doing with sword play.

But Kaladin also learned to be a doctor and leader. When most military men don't proficiently get to lead until their late twenties.

He's an interesting character personality wise but he is far too talented. Plus he's super tall and handsome.

If we talking about this stuff, I enjoyed Grimgar a great deal. The anime was so-so, but I really like the premise of the novel.
It's a mix between character drama, a group of losers trying to survive in a hostile world by being a party of adventurers who hunt monsters for loot; and a focus on tactics and events during the actual fights. Most fantasy focuses on characters too much and disregards action sequences. This one was very interesting to read in that regard.

Constrast this to Shallan who is a gifted scholar and artist. That's it. She screws up a whole lot too. Name times we see Kaladin actually screw up, where he makes a bad choice and isn't just screwed by fate? He gets knocked down a peg or two in the second book which was nice but its mostly just attitude issues and never competency.

Dalanar is at least old and has a life time of experience to pull from and the advantage of nobility so his stoic success is far more believable and even then he frequently makes bad mistakes due to being overly trusting and making poor judges of character.

They would need a combat system with melee, look at any GTA games melee system and youll see why they cant do it. It would be need to see Rockstars sense of humour in a fantasy world but from a gameplay perspective the combat would end up being bad. Its hard to fuck up shooting game mechanics, melee is very complicated, unless you want Ass Cree combat where the enemies kindof stand around you while you press buttons to kill them. Remember, these games are aimed at normal people and casuals, your arent getting Severance combat in an open world AAA game aimed at casual players.

The crypts of winterfell, the mines of casterly rock, the barrows of barrowtown. They're all bomb shelters from nuclear bombs.

A Song of Ice and Fire is in a setting that exists after a nuclear war, the people have returned to a lower level of technology. "The Long Night" is actually a nuclear winter. The "Others" or "White Walkers" are mutated humans, biologically modified but are still humans. Telepaths/Wargs like bran are a result of mutation and inbreeding during the nuclear war and the genetic bottleneck that hiding in small bomb shelters for generations caused.

>dragons
A high tech civilization can easily genetically engineer a dragon
>Undead
There's very few undead characters and they are puppets being controlled by a telepath. GRRM has other stories like Meathouse Man where the exact same thing happens.
>Time Travel
ONLY IN THE SHOW
>Warging
Telepathy which is a science fiction thing too
>Necromancy
as explained by undead
>Magic
Point out any actual magic in the series

Starts off as a typical survival crafting game with random teams.Turns into a weird cross between Star Citizen and an ARPG after the match is won. Limited number of deaths allowed. Once you hit the limit you restart from the survival segment with a new group of people.
Dunno how to work the houses and families into it.

A crummy writer? His technical facilities are amazing. He grew up reading the 18-19th greats, so his style is deliberately quite antiquated. Do you mean it's stilted or awkward somehow?
>>
>>375539767
This is of course subjective as fuck, but the books are just centered around character interaction. Events that happened aren't unique or interesting on their own, but the characters in them and the consequencesthat follow them make them interesting. Roberts Rebellion is a good example of this.

Many things are also more interesting because they aren't spelled out for you, making this a great series for interpretations and theories, for example that the maester actually resent magic, and have a hidden agenda to shun it from Westeros.

im surprised WoT hasn't been mentioned yet and they even started off with Sanderson
would make one hell of an RPG and they would already know how the game should look because half of each book is dedicated to imagery

This fucking autism.

Have you even read the books? I don't think you have.

Nothing about the prose, the characters, or the story struck me as particularly good. They all seemed like little more than a vessel for the cosmic horror, which I wouldn't have any problems with, but that part felt like there was a lot of wasted potential.

That feeling you get from reading Tolkien was never captured in any of the games.

I just want to experience the world of Tolkien, I don't want to fight Sauron or Morgoth, I just want to walk though Nargothrond or see the white walls of Gondolin shimmering in the distance.

If you're doing the third age I want to experience the culture, see their artistry and craftsmanship, hear the language, see the food and architecture. I want to see middle earth a vast undeveloped land of breath taking natural beauty. The last thing I want to do is battle Sauron atop Barad-dûr with a not-fellowship also containing humans, dwarves and elves.

Wait, there's some kind of fan theory that suggests the whole thing is some sort of post-apocalyptic fantasy world?
>>

Martin was primarily a science fiction author before he started A Song of Ice and Fire, a lot of things from this series are very very similar to his science fiction works. He has also written about societies regressing to a medieval level of technology after a nuclear/bioweapon war devastates their planet. He has also written about things very similar to warging and skinchanging happening because of inbreeding and mutations, except it was called telepathy when he did it in science fiction. He has stories where people control dead bodies using telepathy, which is just like how Jon Snow or Berric got "resurrected"

GRRM is a fucking hack and is copying his previous works again but in a "fantasy" setting. There's nothing to suggest this is actually fantasy and not just another fallen world like he has written about many times before.

>GoT has time travel and is actually set on earth after a nuclear war and man has just gone back to the dark ages, and the fantasy shit is just zombies and mutations
D-Did I miss something with GoT? I can count the amount of episodes Ive seen on one hand and havent touched the books since they are unconcluded. Is this actually what this is about?

shit my bad i skimmed it a little too fast

Who was the better character: Matt or Perrin? Matt had all those ancient warriors inside of his head, as well as loli wife but Perrin hadfucking wolf dream teleportation skills and a jew wife

The only way to unlock this autism is to read the books and read a lot of Martin's science fiction books. The show does not go into any of this at all

How does a guy that used to write the equivalent of filler Stargate episodes manage to write something that gets so popular?

Neither of those is an indicator of the strength of their character.

>>375540975
Well, the weird weather patterns could be caused by a shift in Earth's rotation and/or axis, maybe due to overwhelming firepower.
>>
>>375540512
It's actually not, this wouldn't be the first time GRRM has had a fantasy world set in a sci-fi universe either. The only reason it comes up is because GRRM already explained a fantasy world with sci-fi elements in an earlier story and now some people think he's telling a story from the perspective of the fantasy world rather than from the sci-fi adventure looking down on it.

And the "it's a fantasy world is really sci-fi" trope goes all the way back to the 60s, Dragon Riders of Pern is an obvious example since it also contains Dragons who turned out to be genetically engineered.

Personally I don't think that's where he's going with it this time, but it is a distinct possibly.

Who would you rather be, then
>>

Luck

He actually is a decent writer and has been at it for decades and this is his magnum opus. It's luck and hard work for years until his break came.
>>
>>375540818
The prose is top quality, and the characters are just meant to be people who encounter cosmic horror. The story IS the cosmic horror.
>>
>>375540908
You are retarded and have obviously not read the books.

GoT is fantasy as much as any other fantasy settings.Stop posting memes you saw other people post to try and fit in.

You have dragons, trolls, dragons, magic, warging, an army of white walkers who are undead and can turn the dead into white walkers. There is blood magic, a lord of light (god) that can be called upon to resurect people. There are men that have turned to stone, children of the forest who are elf like beings that use magic. An all mistical guy called the three eyed raven that can see the future. There are wiches and warlocks, a guy that performs necromancy. A women queen that can't be hurt by fire and a load more other things.

Tell me again how GoT is not fantasy.

Literally all of that can be explained as Science Fiction.

I will make another /vlit/ thread just to explain this to you
