It had plenty of issues, but I still look back on DA2 fondly. I like the "personal story" idea they were going for, and think the party dynamic is one of Bioware's best.

Even as rushed as it might have been, I'd still take the quests and character arcs in DA2 over Inquisition's massive landscapes with bugger-all in them.

This was DA2's biggest problem. On it's own it's a meh action RPG with some funny moments and characters but as a successor of Origins it was an utter failure.

The concept of having the story happen in a single city over different periods was very interesting but in order to work it needed a lot of detail, otherwise people would compare it to Origins' much bigger and varied world and feel disappointed.

Sadly, the game was rushed as fuck and the city is just a bit bigger than Denerim with a ton of copy-pasted levels.

I think there's a couple of different things that's made Dragon Age 2 age a bit better than what you'd think, besides Biowares overall decline that is.

>Most of the charatcers are interesting and they have goals besides just following the main character. Some are far reaching such as Merrill's and others are more personal like Varric's. Every character feels like they make sense to follow Hawke, perhaps except Merrill she could have been an optional companion but wasn't for some reason.
>The personality system is a honest attempt at giving modern RPG's new life. I think especially this mechanic has aged well. At the time people were pissed about forced dialogue, but I think this is just a result from games being designed in a more cinematic way now. I liked that my Hawke had a personality that was based on my choices and unlocked unique interactions in some cases, the biggest one being able to switch sides with the Qunari and the Chanrty for Red response Hawke.
>Designs aren't terrible. Graphics are, but for the most part armor sense look more polished compared to DA:O and weapons have several options where some are more WoW outlandish in style and others look more practical.
>Romances had a sensible midground to the LGBT question that dominates Bioware today. You can romance any option besides Sebastian as whatever gender you prefer and it doesn't play a big role besides the words characters use to relate to Hawke. all of the characters are fundamentally broken people to some degree. friending them just enables their shit behavior, you just nod and approve of them constantly fucking up and making life more difficult for themselves and everyone around them.
