Anyone who's been exposed to more technical, more dynamic fighting games will quickly pass on tekken. Other top fighters, namely Street Fighter, KoF and MK have advanced impressively in their latest installments; but the relic that is tekken just can't seem to evolve, furthermore many combos can be done simply by hitting 1-button, and the nearly "instant-kill" rage art moves are just laughably broken. Instead of a supplying a proper fighting engine, matches in T7 seem to rely heavily on "who can get their rage move off first". So many elements of the gameplay don't even require any sort of skill. In my book, slow motion over and over again also gets old very quickly. And in the end, it's more of a novelty or gimmick rather than an actual, thought-out fighting game mechanic. But hey, the casual crowd will be pleased!

If you want something a little more "button-masher-friendly," tekken might be your cup of tea.... Key word, MIGHT.

Nina's 10 hit combo is god tier.

They need to add more stages via DLC, especially since I thought remaking Dragon's Nest would mean we'd get more remade stages (like in Tekken Tag 2) but then they didn't make anymore. The fact that G. Corp Helipad and Precipice of Fate have their variations (G. Corp Helipad (Night) and Brimstone & Fire) eating up stage slots also bugs me.

My solution for this is to have all the characters playable in Practice Mode until you unlock them and have an "Event Mode", which is a vs. mode with standard tournament rules fixed and all the characters unlocked. However once you start Event Mode you can't leave it until you exit the game.

Once you've unlocked everyone, Event Mode just disappears from the main menu and you can just use Vs. Mode for competitive play.

Soul Calibur 1 is EXACTLY what 3D fighting should be. There is no axis or plane that the fighters are locked to and must arbitrarily step off of to enter 3D. All motion is always three dimensional and you're always having to account for the depth of attacks as well as their height (whereas Tekken has moves that "track", meaning that you're only having to account for how physically wide your hitbox is unless you're using a move that is designed to catch sidesteppers).

Add to that an offensive guard option that isn't an instant reversal (because doing something stupid afterwards can just get it thrown right back in your face) and it's perfect. The only reason it's not my favorite fighting game ever is because I still prefer 2D fighting games over 3D. But as far as 3D fighting games, it had the concepts down long before Tekken did.

I think the key difference is the general requirement that both fighters face each other at all times. That isn't 100% true (hence why you can occasionally get back or side throws) but by and large that's the rule. I know for a fact in Bushido Blade you can run away in the opposite direction from an opponent.

Beat 'em ups don't qualify as fighting games because it's not a "fight", per se. Logistically speaking a fighting game is rooted in the notion that both characters are of reasonably equal power (i.e. the viability for winning is fairly even between both, barring any differences in ability). In a beat 'em up you're going to be exterminating many weaker characters before you yourself fall. There's a distinct skew in power towards the player character.
