For starters, to actually document details that are currently lost to time such that legacy WoW can be properly preserved for good because even the official legacy servers, should they ever be made, will also go down eventually. Even pretty big details like what exactly takes place in Shimmering Flats races appears not to have surviving documentation (even transcripts of NPC dialogue), and that's if you ignore getting the smaller details right.

And I don't know about you, but even the least bad private servers (like Corecraft test server for 1-10 and Outland content) never mind mostly stock emulation servers like Elysiumruse are imperfect. I think there's a huge difference in playing on a server that gets the details right and given the choice between current private server implementations and official legacy servers, I'd much rather play on the official ones provided Blizzard didn't fuck them up somehow.

Many private servers have gone down over the years but besides Wowscape (the owner of which was making millions) and Nostalrius, they haven't really been shut down so this really is kinda unprecedented.

To be fair, mechanically speaking they're pretty good now (the old Molten servers of course were literally the worst ones around, running an ancient MaNGOS fork that hadn't been updated for a better part of a decade). The mere fact that their servers have been forked from modern Trinitycore alone means that stuff like 1-70 world content works better than on any released vanilla/TBC server and Northrend content as well as core/class mechanics are fairly developed too relative to other WotLK servers besides maybe Gamer-District.

Of course, they're still turbojews (at least in regards to their high-rate server), Molten has the worst community of braindead BRs around and Lordaeron has extreme custom tuning and runs the worst patch as current content, but at this point I gotta give credit where it's due. They're certainly not horrible the way they used to be.

Recently (about a year ago or so) they took a head out of their ass and launched a new server forked from Trinitycore, have actually maintained it for the time being and later applied the same core to their older servers as well.

The low-rate server (Lordaeron) is the new one they launched with new core but now the high-rate server has also been migrated to use it.

Lordaeron has extreme custom tuning (it's no secret that WotLK launch content was trivial with most bosses being cleared without any guild even getting a full 25-man raid up before finishing the job so T7 and T9 really need some kind of buffs but I think most people feel they overdid the buffs) and had working Ulduar, although I don't know about how well it worked exactly (and you can't really talk about tuning anyway because they're not even attempting to have the numbers right right). However, given that it's WotLK, even with the custom tuning, it's kinda obsolete now since they are now running 3.2 patch content and that means Ulduar-ish loot from TOC5 and badge loot superior to Ulduar gear so I'm not sure if you could find a guild running Ulduar now.

The high rate server doesn't have custom tuning but in 3.3 Ulduar is completely and utterly obsolete so I don't think anyone runs it and it's a high-rate server with pay2win.

Balance is fair although Hunters got shafted. At least Paladin is viable in all three roles now. Legendary RNG and Artifact grinding is enough to keep you playing for a solid month excluding quests, dungeons and raids.

The dungeons and raids are fun and fine, but after that it kinda falls flat on its face. Not a whole lot of content to do even though Blizzard promised there would be.

As I see it, Nost was a big vanilla private server shut down by Blizz, got led to believe Legacy Servers were being introduced for half a year because Blizz reached out solely as a PR move, and when they realized they were cucked they gave their data and some character data to another private server which is doing pretty well

So why is the Original nost asking elysisum to shut down and give the data back? What would they gain? What are they even offering?

Blizzard didn't force Nostalrius to shut down (a lot of servers have received cease and desist letters and done nothing about them with no ill effects, Nostalrius admins presumably were stupid enough to think they'd land a job at Blizzard or something by complying). The drama unfolding in this thread has nothing to do with shutdown threats (it's just Nostalrius whining "stop using our character databases" and this was already resolved: no new transfers will be possible but no characters will be removed either).

This isn't a mystery. Nostalrius, as far as we all knew has always been on our side with this.

Last year, Nostalrius more or less deliberately let the server shutdown to create a narrative with Blizzard and resulting hype machine.

After the communication with Blizzard went cold, they looked to recreate things under Elysium. Staff transferred behind the scenes and we saw the birth of new servers / old data being restored; under the name of Elysium.

They have all been wanting to expand and grow the population under Elysium as much as possible, all in a cause to persuade Blizzard.

While Elysium has been doing well so far, they have had a slightly sketchy reputation (gold selling, bugs etc) and they have still been in the shadows of the old Nostalrius name.

This announcement between them is simply to:

a) Create some controversial news and thus keep the vanilla private server hype train rolling.

b) Paint Elysium in a better picture than Nostalrius. Because they are the actual future in the private server community and need to be trusted.

The fact Elysium's response was on pastebin 2 days ago certainly shows that this was prepared ahead of time.

Every enemy takes a while to kill, and pulling a couple can lead to your death.
You level up slowly, money is hard to come by, things are far away, very loot is celebrated.

Its just very deliberate and meaningful, and very wasteful in terms of time.

As I see it, whatever value WoW classic has is in exploration and atmosphere and such like and exploration and discovery are things that veteran players will find themselves derived of because they already know everything there is to know.
