i don't like that their solution to budget/time issues was invariably "it happened offscreen," but i genuinely can't blame them for wanting to ship a complete story no matter the cost, in case the game didn't perform to management's expectations and they'd never get the chance to follow up with a sequel

no amount of artistic genius could satisfy 10 years of steadily-accumulating fanboy headcanon. that doesn't mean ignoring 15's problems, but it also doesn't warrant scapegoating one guy, or even the team, for trying to salvage what they could under impossible restrictions

FF7R hadn't even begun its planning stages when FFXV was halfway through development

They were given 3.5, a huge budget, a shitload of concept pieces, a finished script, assets, a soundtrack, and then decided to make something else anyway. FFV13 was 25% finished when it was changed to FFXV, and FFXV uses a lot of those assets.

I don't think they believe in the project, personally. The way that last year they dropped the FF7R bomb, and the way that there's been a lot of low budget spin offs/ports in the last few years makes me believe they were expecting XV to bomb and needed to supplement their income.

I hate how these bro camp quests / scenes are so easily missable unless you hunt them down or obsessively search the map for every haven and them camp at them. They're great touches that add to the characters but I would only seen like two of them unless I looked up the locations for the rest.

Either way, I find the combat in this game hugely overrated, it's kinda fun but the AI isn't worth a tin of beans where it really counts and the game apes action games so closely in the combat that I can just play Bayonetta if I wanted to and get a better experience, the rest of FFXV outside the combat is straight up padding so it's not like you're getting a great game with the combat.

I don't like how tapping the attack button feels. The animations were made to just flow into each other by holding down the button. When you press attack, it feels more like pressing play. Attacks aren't snappy enough and don't come out immediately as I press the button so there isn't enough indication when a move starts or ends. I can't time my attacks, there's no need either. I don't think you understand. You're constantly locked on to only the points allowed to you by the game. Let's say you have an enemy with two lock on points on its side. You can't choose to aim between them. Noctis will attack one or the other. You can hit that spot if you position yourself just right but that's not what Noctis is aiming for and will move closer to what he actually wants to hit.

It actually doesn't, and I'm pretty sure the confusion is why people don't like this game's combat. XV's combat is far more reactive than combo based like DMC style games. What I mean by that is that you do much better moving in and out of combat by warping, parrying, building up your tech meter or whatever it's called, and using magic than trying to get in as many hits as possible, doing animation cancels, and dodging. Also the fact that you can't dodge out of an attack animation, and you can't really stun enemies with constant attacking, while also being knocked down by one hit makes this game feel very different from typical action games. This is why I think people have problems with the combat, because it's far too sluggish to treat it like a DMC game, especially given that you normally fight large swarms of enemies, where the best tactic then is to hold down square rather than circle, do a dodge and then attack, since the attack out of dodge normal knocks away groups of enemies. That's what I mean by the combat being more reactive than proactive.

How can I choose to attack the neck? I can warp to the head, fall, and start attacking I guess but then Noctis will automatically warp mid combo to what the game wants me to attack. Not good enough. I main those dude. They don't reach far enough horizontally side to side. The best melee crowd control option is the spin2win move the greatsword has. You can't just do it though like you could in Platinum demo. In platinum demo it was hold back+attack and was spammable. Now you need to delay your attack and by then the assassins I'm fighting have already fucked me up.
