Going alright
Implemented a quick item pick up thing. You can pick shit up and physically hold it.
I'm worried about how I'll do this with various types/shapes of items and item-specific animations. The fire extinguisher works alright with this "holding" pose when I just place it relative to the hand bone properly.
But I feel like shit is going to get complex and painful when I introduce more types of items, and multiple actions to perform with each item. Trying to think of a good way to sort of generalize it.

Most of the mechanics are working, timed hits in battle, items, cooking, some field skills, etc.

Game Maker, dude. Has a pretty simple drag-and-drop interface for object behaviour, there IS programming in Game Maker and I'd 110% recommend learning a language anyway, but if you really wanted to you could probably make a game in GM without a single line of your own code. I know I sure as shit did it back when I was 12 or 13.

Somewhere between Ikaruga and the Parodius series, I guess? Probably hard to gauge that from the pictures I've shown off so far since they've mostly been specifically picked empty area shots to show pixel art, but that's the end goal. I myself have ended up blowing a whole lot of time on making editor extensions for Unity and trying (and failing) to make a suitable touch-based shmup control scheme whilst the other two programmers have carried the gameplay a bit.

We have made a lot more progress recently though since we came to the realization that we shouldn't fall into the trap of needless over-optimization, tool creation and general fiddling until later on in the project when we can afford to.

I also think you should know exactly (or close to exactly) how you want the game to play. With that in mind you can design exactly the tools you need to achieve that end. Over-engineering results from a lack of direction.

If I were going to make a scrolling shooter I'd obviously start with scrolling backgrounds, bullet firing, moving enemies, and collision checks. Then I would move on to skeletal structures for multi-part enemies, then some of that camera stuff you were working on, checkpoints or mid-level events, etc.

I would actually say general fiddling is okay, but engineering tools without knowing how they're going to be used is a problem.

I remember once when I was grinding for the sword of kings I had Poo transform into an Atomic Power Robo, and then had Paula pray, which confused all of my party and every enemy, so the enemy Power Robo was healing my party and Poo was healing the enemies. It took like 10 minutes to end the battle because nothing could fucking die.

I feel ya, man. The best advice I can give is just to try powering through. Work on it with anger, just force yourself to work on it. But the opposite may be better if you've already been working nonstop: Stop working and let yourself detox for a few days.
Whatever you decide to do, it seems that you've already got the majority of the game finished. So try not to stress out, finish what needs to be finish, and polish everything that can be. You're making a fun game to play, don't let it stress you like a job.

A card-based 4x game.

Instead of exploring, you throw down biome cards onto the map. These can be anything from larger areas like deserts or mountain ranges, to specific features like a river or a crater. There'd need to be a limit onto how many cards can be thrown onto a given area, to prevent shenanigans.

Each "area" would in turn have randomly filled "slots" for natural resources, smaller NPC factions, or misc stuff. You'd find rare ores or a few trading villages in the mountains, for instance.

As you define the land around you and acquire stuff, more and more cards would enter your "deck", which naturally increases the amount of options you have and buildings you can, you know, build.

Buildings can give bonuses like increase "hand" size or churn out cards that you couldn't get otherwise. Like if you had a wizard school it'd churn out wizard unit cards you could play.

That’s right, it's a fantasy 4x. That's how you'd explain the biome thing. It'd also allow for interesting biomes, biome cards, buildings and units. Explore vast plains of ethereal glass, field armies clad in Dragonskin, and make deals with petty kingdoms of the fae.

Obviously the more exotic cards would be somewhat rarer.

But wait, there's more to this bad idea. There are "decks", each with their own way of handling the world and their own society.

Be a kingdom of feudal fucks who augment their cavalry with magical alloys and wizardly deeds in deep magical forests and plains.

Be some curse-happy dicks who delight in playing cards to twist terrain to their advantage. Weak by themselves, but able to pull those around them into their corner.

Be the money-grubbing cantons and city-states who dredge the wealth from the land and spend it for mystical favor and large hats.

Be the wizardly lands who trade in the people's humanity to better fit them to their purposes, and create hubristic magical wonders on the map.

So yeah that's my bad idea that I'd never be able to deliver on.

If you understand enough general overarching programming concepts than any engine would do fine, but for C++ specifically Unreal would probably be the easiest unless you wanna make your own engine.

If you're looking to do a shmup though I'd say use Unity or Game Maker. Unity uses C# and Game Maker uses GML which is their own language, and both are easy enough to learn even as a novice if you can Google shit or read the Unity API. There's loads and loads of tutorials for both even down to step by step videos/guides on how to make a specific game or genre.

Depends on what game you want to make. For 2D games and with no knowledge in general, game maker would be the the easiest to get into. For 3D, you'd be much better off with Unity but prepare to have to learn C# (or use playmaker). There are other engines too of course, but it all depends on your skills and what kind of game you want to make.

I'm attempting to do balancing/scaling on my unit choices/abilities for what was originally an RTS idea, but also works somewhat on the level of an MMORPG kinda thing.

It's more so science-fantasy and science-fiction in one, so I doubt I'll ever get to producing it, but the concept itself is like a child of Warhammer 40k and Mass Effect.
The grimdark, wartorn and outrageous beyond powers of 40K.
The conspiracy, sense of impeding doom and political importance of Mass Effect.
With most races being the product of what would happen if we found human-like beings constructed on other planets, but the gene seed was a derivative which hosted from experiments some quantum-level trolls did to us before allowing us to uncover, in our future, a means of actual 'sorcery'.


The bio-mechanical research these 'sorcerers' take is frowned upon and is what divided the basic human population into those who worship codes and traditional empirical stature ('Ravagers'), those who functionally reap worlds of resources for mechanical industry ('Automatons'), the gliding-over-all high reach royalty who experiment with genetic and biological sorcery/mods ('Archangel') and those who choose to conform to advanced space-fairing commerce and post-spacepirate technology ('Wanderers').

There is also the ever-growing fuckup of the Archangels' first chapters which is the Organics, basically Tyranids who have 'hive minds' that help or hinder based on their needs and can clearly communicate/understand their heritage.

On a planet's surface, I wanted it to be Mars, was an incident which resembled Dark Sun's dark sorcerer influence on an isolated group of Ravagers who were specifically breeded by Archangels to host archaic but brutally effective means of dark power.
It was the leading plot point for a 'Brute' NPC, who would soon uncover the history of what went down in what was basically an Auschwitz type deal for the first of his kind, except they killed each other under illusions like false suns, genetically modified wildlife, poisonous plants, and random concentrated storms.

For something like that, it might be the most economical to charge per-minute of music just because of hte proposed volume, but that depends. Metroid is my favorite series, so at least i'd be very interested!

Anyone else think anon knows how much it hurts to read this and know that you have all the ideas for a game, have so many plans, even started actually making it, but feel like shit when you actually get to it? I'm making a story oriented bullet-hell crossed Nuclear Throne and Earthbound. We're a two man team and it gives me a headache to try and do animated pixel art again, to program, or to plan the system.

TL;DR
I can't work on my game, because it makes me feel like shit. I think I bit off more than I can chew, but don't want to drop what we currently have.
