Firstly, there's only 1 maybe 2 spots in the game where you'll encounter more than 2 dogs at once, also, thanks to the way rallying, sidestepping and follow up attacks work in this game compared to DaS, they're infinitely better and more fair fights. If the dog gets a cheap hit on you, you can attack back and get your health back but thanks to sidestepping, you can much more easily dodge the dogs attack and follow up without having to deal with their awkward lunging sidestep they always did after attacks in DaS

Don't even complain about either if you've never experienced the hell of trying to fight that big group of hit and run bastards inside the bridge of 1-2 without a proper shield, those are some bullshit dogs

You see this post is very humorous because it presents false hope that a coveted ps4 game will come to the Personal Computer, a rival platform. However, in truth, this will never happen, and only demonstrates the Personal Computer fans delusion to expect such

They praised the shit out of it, " I love the art style, look at those graphics finally I can use my pcs full power, the Online is gonna be awesome " and and and.

After they realized that this will be another Demon Souls they suddenly changed their mind and called it the worst Souls game, enjoy your 30fps.

Im loving it, and im no fanboy I own several consoles and a good rig, but gabenfags are the worst thing in this world. Thank god they won't ever see the georgeous world of yharnam.

Uh no. They meant to summon The One Reborn. There's no evidence whatsoever that bell ringers are capable of summoning great ones. Great ones have no master. The One Reborn, on the other hand, is no more than a fuck up made of lots of former citizens, so he's basically a puppet.

>>324068372
The One Reborn came about by way of sacrificing Yahargul's citizens in attempt to create a pseudo great one. Obviously they fucked up along the way because The One Reborn is a fuck up beyond all proportions. An abomination.
>>
>>324068356
Dude you really won't stop posting this until your edgy waifu wins, will you?

It's a Great One created from the ritual that took place in Yahar'gul. They sacrificed everyone in that part of the town you can't get to before the red moon as part of the ritual, which is why it and every enemy in that place is a mess made out of body parts.

Boss designs are great. But all the Souls games need better boss mechanics, except maybe Demon's Souls.

Too many of the bosses have powerful attacks that barely leave openings for one hit.

Amygdala is a great one, but it's like a single conciousness spread amongst multiple bodies. Rom was an attempt at creating a great one, but it wasn't a complete success. It wasn't a failure, but it wasn't a success either, more like something in between. Celestial Emissary was the same idea, but was the product of the Choir experimenting on orphans. The Hunter is probably the first and only truly successful ascencion of a human into Great One.

I don't now if Rom was a failure, it never says exactly how they ascended her or what the purpose of the experiment was.
Emissary seems to have come out right, as it looks just like all the other experiments, only more powerful.
Fake Iosefka began ascending, but you kill her before she can complete her metamorphosis.

It's unknown exactly how Wet Nurse and Mother Brain came to be. I think the Japanese description of Mergo's cord says that Mergo created the brain when Mensis asked it for brains with eyes. And if Mergo has the power to create life then Wet Nurse is most likely made by Mergo for protection.

The only time it's ever shown actually happening is when Hunter ascends. We never see a Great One come to life at any other time, so it's not clear exactly how the process works or it if always requires the same methods. Iosefka's Imposter only used one cord, despite the Hunter needing three cords and the blood echoes of the Moon Presence. And since Emissary and Rom don't drop cords it may be they didn't use the cords in the same way, or may not have even used cords.

Well, the thing some people seem to forget is that, just because it's a Great One, doesn't mean they all belong to the same species. To my knowledge, the only true great ones that are seen or mentioned are Oedon, Moon Presence, Mergo(Or Wet nurse since it's inferred that they're one and the same), Amygdala, Kos, Orphan of Kos, and The Hunter.

Great Ones probably don't have a 'species'. They're a completely different life form to humanity.
For one thing, their children share none of their traits. Oedon's child is a little choir slug and Kos' child is a sort hunter look-alike. I don't think they're bound by any kind of genetics, and they can take the form and power that they like, either conscious or subconsciously.
The fact that humans can become Great Ones shows that either they have the ability to drastically change DNA or they don't function on a genetic system like humans.

I think Amygdala is more of a single entity. It's 'head' lives in the Nightmare and it's tendrils exist in the waking world.
I find it kind of interesting that Amygdala and Moon Presence are the only Great Ones shown to manipulate dreams. Amygdala can transport people between the worlds, but Moon Presence is the only one who can transport itself between worlds. It may even have the power to create dreams, judging from the incident of its first beckoning.

Do you think any other Great Ones can manipulate dreams, or is it just those two? I guess Orphan of Kos pulled the Fishing Hamlet into the nightmare, so it may have some power over dreams.

Well Kos was dead by the time the Fishing Hamlet nightmare was created. Byrgenworth would have had to leave before that, because they took the research back to create Rom. Kos either died while Byrgenworth were performing research or even beforehand. The corpse of Kos would be a rumour that spread quickly, which could be how Byrgenworth first discovered the hamlet.

>>324092605
I think Moon Presence can alter the real world as well though. I'm fairly certain it's the reason behind the Blood Moon's existence in the first place. That also goes back to the whole Rom thing. I think Willem learned to some extent what the Moon Presence was capable of, so he tried to ascend Rom and use her as a defense measure to protect everyone. That explains a lot of the lake rune descriptions and the fact that the Blood Moon shows up after killing Rom.
>>
Why are old Yharnam werewolves manlets?

>>324092970

>>
>>324093174
Mensis were trying to contact Kos to help them into the Nightmare, but Kos was long dead so they wound up snagging Moon Presence.
Whenever Moon Presence shows up the moon turns red and the beast scourge runs wild. So Rom was hiding this moon to protect Yharnam.
I wonder, though, was it Willem's will doing that? Rom is mindless, so it couldn't have reacted to the Mensis ritual and made the conscious decision to protect Yharnam.

No, the shit that Mensis was trying to do ended up being a giant fuck up. They tried to call forth a Great One, but they ended up killing themselves(bar Micolash) and creating a false imitation of one, which ended up being the One Reborn. Actually it was two, the One Reborn being the failure that was created from the bodies of those in the Advent Plaza, and the giant eyeball thing in the Nightmare, which ended up being a great one(I knew I was forgetting one when I made that list).

Wrong on all counts.
None of the Mensis Cultists died. They all entered the Nightmare, like Micolash. That's what all the spiders are, mutated Mensis cultists. Patches was likely one as well.
Also, the goal was clearly to contact a Great One, specifically either Mergo or Kos. They asked Mergo for "brains lined with eyes" and Mergo created the brain trusts and giant brains.
When they realised Mergo was fucking retarded they decided to try speaking to Kos instead.
Of course, in the real world, the result of the ritual was that the Moon Presence was contacted, which is how they got into the nightmare, the One Reborn was created from the sacrificed citizens of Yahar'gul, and the cultists themselves eventually wasted away as their real bodies were still in the waking world.

When they tried to contact Mergo, the fact that Mergo suffered stillbirth caused them all to die in an instant, transporting them to the Nightmare.

I didn't say that it died when Mensis was there, Mergo died before it was born. Mergo died in stillbirth. Same as how Orphan of Kos died due to the death of his mother. And both withdrew into Nightmares which existed before the shit went down in Mensis. It was created by the conciousness(s) of both leaving the material realm.
>>
>>324095472
The stillbirth is also mentioned in the item description for the stone you get from Lady Yharnam. You can also see what looks like a fetus inside of it.

>Why do you want higher numbers in a game with RPG elements?

I mainly get that idea because Old Hunters adds credence to it. One of the ideas is that many of the one third umbilical cords came from Orphan of Kos's corpse. Mergo's umbilical cord was found later, within the Pthumerian labyrinth.

>>
>>324095914
The cord that Iosefka's Imposter used may have come from Kos or Orphan, but I don't think all of them do.
Mergo's cord definitely comes from Mergo, Arianna's cord definitely comes from her child.
The cord used by Laurence may have come from Orphan as well.

But I don't necessarily think a Great One has to die to give up its cord. Orphan is still very much alive, and has been for quite some time. It actually had the chance to grow, unlike Mergo. I don't think Mergo has been hiding out in the nightmare since it died all those centuries ago, because it's still a helpless infant. It was only recently reborn, most likely.
>>
>>324096017
It especially doesn't help when one of the main themes of the story is that the line between realities is blurred beyond recognition.

>>324096120
Mergo was recently reborn. The Mensis ritual was to contact it and reanimate it.
A Great One is too powerful to use just one life to revive it, so they used an entire city. Mergo was revived in the nightmare, and The One Reborn was the byproduct of all the sacrifices.

>>324096120
Then it all goes back to that idea of what constitutes the form and abilities of a Great One. It's obvious that they all most likely belong to their own species and harbor their own abilities. But that also brings up a question.

What would the concept of death mean to a Great One? With Amygdala, we can see it means nothing as we only cut off one head of the hydra in that regard. Oedon, we don't know what the fuck is going on with him. The only one we've seen to be killed in "normal terms" is the Moon Presence, and that's only after consuming the Cords and gaining the power to ascend ourselves. So where does that leave all the others?

Chalice dungeons are fun when the bosses don't kill you in one hit.
>>
>>324096620
I think most Great Ones with a physical form can be killed, but it probably has to do with who's killing them. The Hunter, by the time he reaches a Great One, has quite a bit of insight. Perhaps Great Ones can only be killed by other Great Ones, because regular humans just lack the mental power to actually end their lives.

Kos died in childbirth, so there is definitely some inherent mortality to them. My thought is that Kos died because she basically gave her soul, all her power to the Orphan so that it could be born strong and not die instantly like all other pureblood Great Ones.
>>
>>324096620
>>324096949

it could be that it's a complication brought about by their dual parentage between an extra dimensional being and more simple life form like a human
>>
>>324096949
That's a little iffy for me. It's said that Kos washed up on the shore already dead. So her death is kind of a mystery to me and many other people. It could have just as easily been childbirth that killed her, or it could've been something else. If there is one thing that Paleblood Hunt made me think about though, it's the Doll's role in everything. The idea that she was a Great One all along, helping hunts millennium before the hunts of Yharnam and Pthumeru, is fucking mind boggling. But, at the same time, it makes sense.

There are 3 Great Ones that can generate Nightmares:

Moon Presence
Orphan of Kos
Mergo/Wetnurse

All 3 grant NIGHTMARE SLAIN, and all 3 can influence the Moon to varying degrees (MP being the best at it)
>>
>>324097302
Kos obviously died in childbirth. She died, then Orphan was born. What else could it have been? Also remember how hard it is for Great Ones to produce viable offspring, and that the effort to give birth very well may have killed her.
>Doll was once a Great One
No. That makes no sense. The Doll was a creepy sexual thing Gehrman made, and then when he was locked into the Dream he decided to remake it but this time with life.
Besides, Moon Presence is the patron saint of hunters. Doll is just a companion to Gehrman and tool of the MP, like the messengers.
You might draw parallels with the Doll and Maiden in Black, but the Doll never has any direct interaction with Moon Presence, and there's nothing in the game suggesting that she's an ancient Great One or anything like that.
>>
>>324097515
Amygdala also seems to have some power over nightmares, transporting you to the nightmare on two separate occasions, and I presume it also transports Patches to Yharnam to trick you.

Kind of makes you wonder why Mensis went to all that trouble when they could just line up for Amygdala. I guess even with high insight you still need Amygdala's permission, in the form of an item.
>>
>>324094728
>>324095016

The JP description for Mergos cord says that the Mensis had some random cord and accidentally summoned Mergo with it, and Mergo gifted them with the Mensis Brain in response. The other poster was right.

They're trying to beckon Kos with Mergo, and beckoned the MP by mistake
>>

But think for a second. Since when do we ever see normal humans performing some sort of magical shit? When they call upon great ones to channel their power. Gehrman is a normal human being. How in the hell would he be able to imbue an inanimate object with life? Also, there is in-discrepancies in the timelines between what the Doll talks about and the actual timeline. At most, Gehrman has been around for a century. But, the doll and the gravestones in the dream account to an innumerable amount of hunters. We encounter two in Yharnam, being Djura and Eileen. Things just don't add up with the doll.

>Gehrman is a normal human being
He's far, far from it. He made a pact with the Moon Presence and was granted immortality, and I suppose a few favours as well.
>Gehrman has been around for a hundred years
I think it's somewhat longer than that. Also, hunters don't come one at a time. Djura and Eileen are around the same age and they were both dreaming hunters. Every time a hunter is awakened they are buried in the dream, that's why there's so many. It just shows how many hunters have come and gone during Gehrman's time.
>>
I dont think the Moon Presence's intentions are malicious. Its body is decaying and it looks like its in the process of dying, though it could take hundreds or even thousands of years before it actually dies.. If you look at its animations in both endings that involve it, it desperately clings to you, checking if you are capable of becoming its offspring.

How I see it, Gherman made a deal with the Moon Presence to provide a powerful surrogate and would live within the dream until it grew up. Gherman's goal is to protect the hunters by creating the Hunters Dream, a place where those cursed can return to and try again and again until they transcend the hunt by getting killed by him in the end. If the player refuses, then the MP's side of the deal kicks in. If the hunter is not capable of being a surrogate to the MP, they take over Gherman's role, if they can become a surrogate they kill the already dying Moon Presence and are now reborn anew with the doll who can possibly live forever in a sealed off and safe location.
>>
>>324098105
That's what I was suggesting. The fact that Amygdala is the only one shown doing this probably means that not many Great Ones can influence dreams in any way. Rom can create illusions, but not true dreams, and Amygdala can transport beings between dreams but not itself. Maybe all Great Ones have some small affinity with dreams, but Moon Presence is definitely the most adept. It can freely move in and out of dreams and nightmares, can influence the waking world from the dream on a huge scale, much larger than Amygdala, and can even consciously create dreams. Mergo and Orphan likely created their parts of the Nightmare by accident, subconsciously, as they're both infantile. Mergo didn't seem to have full control either, as it couldn't conjure up Micolash's requests quite right.
>>
>>324098209

Alright I'll probably be accused of not paying attention enough or something, but how the actual FUCK does anyone deduce shit like this ? Where are you getting any of this information ?
>>
>>324066562
Felt like I was playing Impossible Creatures for a second.
>>
>>324098209
True, but there's also the fact that the Hunter's Dream continues to exist even after the Moon Presence is killed. This is the one thing that always sort of confused me. When you killed it and became a Great One, did you become the one to continue maintaining it? Or, was there something else there as well? Another thing that comes into this whole idea was the appearance of the Winter Lanterns.
>>
>>324096120
The Healing Church has spent an unknown amount of time cleaning up after the mess that results from the Great Ones descending. Every so often Great Ones knock up chicks around the city, and the Church takes the resulting offspring for research purposes. You can see their half-breed zoo in the Upper Cathedral Ward, who have gotten loose when the staff died.

Who knows how many cords and other artifacts they picked up in the process? We already know they have no idea what to do with them, since the Mensis were experimenting on one instead of eating it, and nobody even remembers what lining your brain with eyes does anymore.

Iosefkas and Willems cords could have came from any of these unions
>>
>>324098516
Djura and Eileen both make mention of 'dreaming' in their dialogue. They have some way of knowing that the Hunter is connected to the Dream and the Moon Presence. Perhaps they can just see telltale signs.
Also, they're both quite old, probably not too far apart in age. They were probably dreaming not far apart from each other, and may even have met during their connections.

There's also the matter of the Yahar'gul Stooges. They destroy the lamp in the Gaol, which suggests they knew what it was and wanted to cut off your route to that area. They may have dreamt at some point as well.

Ludwig also had some connection to the Moon Presence. He may not have dreamt, as the Church was sort of disconnected from Gerhman's hunters, but he could actually sense the Moon Presence's influence.
>>
>>324098727
None of the nightmares died when their creator does. Even Rom's little illusion lake stays.
Nightmares are real, physical places. They wouldn't just crumble when their creator dies.

I think a lot of people were confused by Micolash's english name. He's not a host in the sense that he maintains the nightmare, he's a host in the sense that he oversees it.
>>
>ayy include a guy who kills everyone you saved

i was probably stupid for not noticing that, i think its pretty neat actually, his transformation model was probably the coolest looking in the game.

>>
>>324099101
The remnants of the choir are probably the brainsuckers, wolves, and that one nuked dude you learn make contact from
>>
>>324098815
>as the Church was sort of disconnected from Gerhman's hunters

I dont think any of the hunter groups were ever disconnected. I could be wrong, but Gherman himself seems to have had a good relationship with Laurence. I think its just different groups are sponsored by different organizations but they ultimately work together. There isnt much or a reason to not want to work together.
>>
>>324099219
No, the Iosefka impostor was of the Choir, as she is wearing choir garb. There is also a Choir Hunter down in Byrgenworth and one that came along with the dudes from Mensis into the Nightmare.
>>
what's the deal with ebrietas exactly? was it captured by the church, working with them, manipulating them or something else?
>>
>>324099193
>I don't think I ever remember there being any mention of Ludwig knowing of the Moon Presence
Literally his entire lore significance. The "guiding moonlight" is literally the Moon Presence. He can 'see' it's influence and guidance.
>>
>>324098986
That doesn't imply that Iosefka is using a cord that Willem used, mostly because it's a one-time use, the cords get consumed. It mentions Willem to explain the difference in the goals of Byrgenwerth and the Church, and to teach the player what using them does
>>
>>324099349
Well I just mean that the Church hunters likely didn't have a connection to the dream. They probably worked together with other schools of hunters, but I don't think they were apprenticed to Gehrman.
>>
>>324099437
He was asking about what happened to the choir staff in the UCW, dingus
>>
>>324099349
Gehrman's Hunters were actually started off as more of a secret operation. They'd look for hints of the Scourge and hunt it down in secret. When shit started getting out of hand; however, Gehrman's hunters were left behind. They needed a more active force to go out and fight off those infected.
>>
>>324099518
It wouldn't make sense for the cord to mention a character if it never had any connection to him.
>cords are one time use
Factually incorrect. After Iosefka uses her cord you can kill her and take it.
>>
>>324088532
>mfw finding her on the sewers

>>
>>324099485
The Holy Moonlight Blade being an ancient artifact seems to suggest that Moon Presence has been guiding hunters far longer than Yharnam has existed. There may have been beast hunters in ancient Pthumeru who were watched over by the Moon Presence.

>>
>>324099485

>>

>>
>>324087010
>Someone wrote all of this shit
I don't know if I want to read it or not.
>>
>>324099824
Ludwig was unique in that he could see the moon's guidance without dreaming. The sword is imbued with the power of the moon, which is perhaps what awakened this ability of his.

>>324099908
Ludwig refers to it as his "guiding moonlight", and sees it as a strand of light in his mind. If he dreamt he'd known what it actually was and could give proper context to it.
>>
>>324099908
But it never implies that he did dream, either. In fact, it's really unclear as to where he became connected to the eldritch truth.
>>
>>324091986
Make up shit as you go while trying to put the little facts you find together.

Moon Presence probably seeks out strong individuals to be its surrogate and tried to guide Ludwig to transcendence with the Moonlight Blade. Its probably been trying to find a proper surrogate for thousands of years.

Ludwig didnt recruit Gerhman, they just lived in the same time period and were both hunters. The natural progression of the game bears witness to the progressive transformation--the huntsmen patrolling the town square, those in advanced stages in the sewers, and then those in their final stages, whether it be your typical feral werewolf, all the way to monstrosities like the Cleric Beast.

You can even argue that it progresses into degenerate stages, including those of previous outbreaks, such as Old Yarhnam, where they're no longer savages beasts but dried husks, clinging to life.

I think that's where a lot of the theories and ideas get fucked over in terms of the lore. The idea of the passage of time is so fucking convoluted. It's possible that Gehrman and Ludwig knew each other. It's also possible that he went into the Nightmare shortly after Ludwig joined the Church Hunters. It's also possible that these two events happened a century between each other. No one knows.
>>
>>324101693

Its not hard to make a reasonable guess for this timeline. Gehrman knows Laurence, who started The Healing Church, fondly, which indicated that he knew him for a long period of time. The church didnt sit around while the scourge happened and Ludwig was the first church hunter. Its not hard to put two and two together.
>>
>>324101457

Something I want to know is, is the Cleric beast kind of the penultimate stage of beasthood? They say Laurence is the first Cleric Beast, which implies that several hunters/afflicted have turned into Cleric Beasts throughout the history of the hunt. I wonder if all these werewolves we see running around Yharnam would become Cleric Beasts if left unchecked.

Not all beasts become 'cleric beasts'.
The harder you fight the scourge the stronger it gets. Clerics and priests who fought back the beastly urges through sheer willpower were eventually the ones who became the most horrible beasts. Cleric, Amelia, Laurence and Ludwig are some of the largest, most mutated beasts we see in the game, and they were all priests.

There were multiple hunter workshops.
There were the original hunters, who's workshop still exists, the church hunters, who are a seemingly modern school, the powder kegs, and then Gehrman's dreaming hunters, who were chosen from the various schools.

It's weird, Dark Beasts seem to be the "ultimate" beast based on a couple item descriptions.

The stuff with Cleric Beasts seems to be more connected to the "being more holy makes a uglier beast" thing. Ludwig is probably the "holiest" person is the lore, since he was good in spirit, legitmantly thought he was doing the right thing and was a devout follower of the church. Dumb as shit since he couldn't figure out what was going on and how the rest of the church were evil, but super Holy. And he turned into the vilest, most unseemly beast seen in the game.

Laurence was the first Cleric of the Healing Church (since he founded it) and became the first Cleric Beast, which then had to be put down by Brador, perhaps to cover up the fact that thier leader turned into a mindless beast (but then they put his skull on the altar for all to see......?).

Amelia is a cleric but doesn't turn into a Cleric beast, which raises the question whether Laurence looking like the first Boss is just laziness from From.

My personal theory (with almost nothing to back it up) is that Dark Beasts are the result of hundreds, maybe thousands of years of a beast slowly growing in power. But the Cleric Beasts and Ludwig were relatively young, but horribly transformed due to them resisting it for so long.

Dark Beasts are huge and powerful, but still relatively dignified. If Beasthood is turning from Man into a Animal, then Paarl is a "clean transformation", symmetrical, 4 legs, looks like a wolf.

Cleric Beast (and especially Ludwig) are deformed and disgusting. Laurence has a giant arm and Ludwig has all sorts of oddities.

I think the longer beasts are alive the more powerful and strong they get, but the proportions and "mutation" factor are defined by other factors.

One human lifetime tops.
The church explodes onto the scene and is quickly extremely powerful by way of the blood.
Gherman and Maria and Byrgenwerth rape the fishing village after Kos washes up dead, they probably kill the orphan. Maria regrets it and dies.
Cainhurstfags happen at the same time, rise against the church and are wiped out after the church begins commissioning their own hunters.
Church starts spreading the plague themselves likely to have more experimental data on beasthood after Laurence turns on them, gets out of hand as the Gherman derived hunter schools have begun to turn at this point as well. They panic and burn it all down.
Hunter pool is largely exhausted, commission the populace to form militias and root out the plague themselves, backfires because bloodlust, only spreads everything worse.
Everything's an anarchic hellhole at this point, you show up to be cured of an unspecified disease.

I think its the vermin description but something in the game says that the harder you resist the beast curse, the longer it germinates and the worse of a beast you become. While "Cleric Beasts" are the next step past werewolf, once you pop you are stuck at that level of beasthood.

>>
>>324107196
Cleric Beast drops the badge of Ludwig's hunters. Amelia was probably a blood saint.
I think Ludwig's horrible transformation is due to his willpower. By focusing on his moonlight he was able to fend off the beast much longer than anyone else, and even regained his mind after transforming. Willpower that strong is bound to build a powerful inner beast. Seems almost like his will and his scourge were evenly matched and constantly at odds.
There's also the matter of his second 'mouth', which is filled with eyes and fires an arcane spray attack. This could suggest that even when he succumbed to the scourge his wisdom and insight became manifest in his beast form.

>>
>>324107509
Dude, Bloodborne has WAY MORE than one silly meme helmet, and they actually do have an inherent significance that's not tacked-on. Basically eyes=insight, so everyone who doesn't know the truth about the ayylmaos wears a vision-obstructing helmet (the executioners, the choir, the vilebloods, the patients... there's also a bunch of guys who gouge out their eyes to avoid becoming mad) whereas the Mensis dudes wear a hat that lets them see, but binds them to the Great Ones. It's not exactly deep but it's genuinely meaningful.

>>
>>324107737
Patches wasn't a beast, he was more of a kin. I guess we never really learned why the Mensis cultists became spiders, or why some of them still had human features.
As for the beggar, I think he's probably embraced his beasthood. If fighting the scourge makes you mutate horribly and lose your mind, then how about embracing it? The Beast Embrace rune suggests that if you accept the scourge then it's quite gentle on you. So the Beggar may have simply accepted and embraced his new lifestyle. I mean, he was a cannibal already, it's not like becoming a beast was much of a lifestyle change.

laurence isn't a cleric beast, at least not the one you fight, originally

It's implied the hunter that invades you multiple times in the DLC is the guy who killed the real laurence after he turned, and the real laurence is the headless blood letting beast, as you see his decapitated head on the altar in front of vicar amelia, which is what gives you the wilem and laurence cutscene about fear the old blood.

Then in the nightmare, you fight the personification of laurence but only after you acquire his head from the altar
>>
>>324108112
You might as well go through them at least once, just to see all the bosses and get all the backstory.
They're not that tough, and less complex than they seem. You can basically get every chalice material just by doing the story chalices in sequence. Also, they carry over to NG+, so you can finish the game and all your chalices will remain as they were. They don't scale to NG+ levels either. The later chalices are at NG+ level, but they don't go beyond that.
