Well it was classified as postmodernism as the narrative focuses largely on the current and upcoming (then) social status and issues but also has many of postmodernisms signature characteristics such as playfulness and irony. MGS2 challenges what a game actually is and also leaves some parts to interpretation.

You have to account for what it was at the time, during it's release. Like it works as almost a parody of the bush administration while serving as a metaphor for deceptive government and societies willingness to be controlled using the nature of it's medium to drive that home. That level of political commentary in a mainstream game during that era was pretty much unheard of.

MGR sits in its own little area. People here shit on it sometimes but I found it to be very entertaining. I'll admit bias toward the first MGS since it blew my mind as a teen with its tone and gameplay.
