the source-ports are like these user-made "fronts", that run the original game's files in order to make them run smooth on modern systems. Most of them also allow you to use modern resolutions, customize controls, and even enable some "enhancements" that were not possible on original game. There's nowadays a source-port for almost all major 90's classic shooters.
Playing the old DOS Dooms is near impossible on systems newer than WinXP, and using a DosBox is kinda crappy choice when ZDoom etc do everything it does, but better and faster. And yes, I have W7 Ultimate x64.

Just make sure that the source-port you use does not have some faggy new shit enabled by default, such as jumping / crouching, Y-axis mouse aiming or texture filters. Not to mention crap like BLOOM.

I the first time I played both Dooms, Wolfenstein 3D, Blood, Blake Stone, Duke 3D and Shadow Warrior I played them with keyboard only.
While up/down mouselook is absolutely stupid because those games weren't designed with it on mind, I think the optimal setup is kb+m.

That's actually the Baron design that made it into the game, though at least based on this screenshot they didn't do a very good job of translating it into a 3D model. It does look a lot better in the E3 gameplay trailer where you can see it off in the distance for a couple seconds, so maybe this screenshot just isn't very flattering.

There's usually bunch of torrents etc for the whole "Doom collection", which has D1, 2 and Final.

GZDoom is also a good source-port, and many big mods these days use it. However, it has tons of changes and "enhancement" on by default. At least enable Font scaling on high resolutions, and disable the texture filter, vertical aiming and jumping.

id software's focus is on the singleplayer, not the multiplayer. MP is mostly being handled by Certain Affinity.

It only looks like multiplayer is the "focus" because they're being tight with any singleplayer material since it's the main aspect of the game that they're trying to sell. It's easy to spoil a map-based singleplayer game by showing off too much. Whereas the MP is completely different and has no spoilers whatsoever so they can be more liberal with what they show off.

Doom 3 was a critically acclaimed game and a commercial success, same for it's expansion pack.

It is still viewed upon highly outside of /v/ and the BFG edition also did well despite it shitting on a lot of things.

Doom 1 and 2 is infinitely easier to mod for and also it supports both low quality effort and top quality work, along with low quality sprites and high quality sprites, or even models in it thanks to source ports.

Accessibility is everything.
Doom 3 takes a lot more effort to make it look good, because the baseline for visuals is considerably higher and mapping is genuinely tedious and unfun for it

Old Doom is just so much better.
It also helps that the old guard is very welcoming and helpful to newcomers even now, while the Doom 3 community sort of moved onward since they didn't get nearly as much support.

It's not universally accepted that the originals are better but it is the biggest and most correct evaluation viewpoint for Doom.

Doom 4 just wasn't ever going to be what you or I would have wanted, because sales will always be the most important thing.
And since consoles have a very large group of players that developers and publishers feel they need to cater to as number one, many things will always be changed to accommodate them.

This is not necessarily a bad thing in itself by default, but what it comes with this time around is

They play to the strengths of a controller instead of the weaknesses.

FPS games with a lot of buttons used is harder on a controller, then you slap in the need for precision(Unless Doom 4 has autoaim, correct me if this is the case) and the need to move and shoot and it will be harder as a result.

So the pacing will have to be slower by design to accommodate for these.
DMC needs a different kind of precision, and Dark Souls doesn't really require a lot of precise inputs and is more about positioning and timing.

It is less about the amount of challenge a game provides and more about why a game is made easier.

If Doom 4 is designed for a console first then the encounters will be easier as a result. No big deal to console players because it's designed this way.
If Doom 4 is the easier version of the game compared to the PC because of the controller then it becomes an issue because they are being coddled and nobody likes that.

Console parity is a thing for a reason.

For some reason this makes me tilt my head. At some point, the gore is too detailed, and it's a strange phenomena. When things resemble human too much, I guess it's like that moment in Mount & Blade when I watched dead bodies ragdoll off the ladders and I was disgusted with myself for wasting life like this.

It also takes like 2.5 RL shots to kill someone and i'm talking dead on shots. Loadouts are hurting the MP bad because damage is too fucking tame with the silliest weapons. Everything should be on map with maybe some very simple loadouts like rifle pistol etc.

And i say simple loadouts because im compromising if it was up to me no loadouts just pistols.

Granted it isn't considerably faster, but MP IS faster. Add to it good level design and high damaging weapons to provide for quick DM. Also add dodging, sliding, etc, which does change the pace and reaction time you require.

DOOM multiplayer looks soulless. Even Halo had weapons that could one-shot you. None of the webms shows this in DOOM.

The absence of oneshots isn't inherently bad game design. There have been instances where it worsens a game significantly and if you want it in for stuff like quick, arcadey deathmatch then there's already Quad Damage and (I guess) Demon Runes.
