DMC4's combat is better, graphics, more characters and more options for combat.
DMC3's structure, level design, story..basically everything else is better.

The only thing that is on par is music.
I still play DMC4 more though, what is wrong with me.

Definitely not Hack and slash. Hack and slash is for GoW and the like, not games focused on style and complex combos. Though I would say character action/spectacle fighter/Cuhrazy, is a subset of hack and slash (with the exception of Godhand)

I just call them action games. That's kind of a vague way to put it, but most other action-oriented games have some other qualifiers I can refer to them with, whereas DMC, Bayonetta, etc., feel more like purely action games.

I REALLY like how W101 has no combo strings and instead is about chaining together moves which can all be done raw. Just a shame about the lack of moves. Seriously only three per weapon? You can't use stick inputs to do all four moves with your assist morphs? It's such great combat fundamentals let down by a lack of variety and depth.

A wonderful 101 sequel would probably be the best thing ever but >5000 copies sold

Literally all they'd have had to do to make assist morphs useful and fun is allow stick inputs when pressing X to create them just like the main morphs. As it is now they're hard locked into one move. Assist gun always does cyclone for instance.

Also the game desperately needs a style system beyond the basic combo system. I've seen people do absolutely crazy shit but there's no reason to because you can get high combo without huge variety.

Bayonetta 1 was designed with the intention of you not relying on Witch Time the better you got at the game. Gracious and Glorious is supposed to be your first taste of that on a normal playthrough, and the highest difficulty disables Witch Time entirely, except for special circumstances.

The original game suffered from a huge amount of flaws.

>weapon locked enemies is the complete antithesis of what DMC's gameplay is about


The rerelease fixed a ton of problems, gave us must-style, and turbo mode is a welcome addition. It's still nowhere near DMC3/4 tier and it has like no good memorable boss fights but it's actually surprisingly good now.

I like DMC3 but honestly I didn't care for most of the bosses. There's Vergil, Agni and Rudra, and that's it, the rest are mediocre or shit. DMC4 recycled its bosses way too often but at least I didn't hate fighting them (except Sanctus).

Also DMC4 has style switching which is amazing. If only the game was actually fucking finished.
