I haven't played it since I was 12 so my memory on this is shaky, but in FFIX, the fakeout boss was Kuja, who was the ongoing villain of the entire game, then he got a powerup form and cool music in his boss fight. But then you had to fight some weird fucking thing out of nowhere after him, that was never mentioned up until then, that was supposed to be the concept of memories of some shit.

Hard to find a better one than this

I actually really liked the way it played out though. The game felt complete after the False King, and every mention of the final encounter with the old one suggested that there would be no true fight.

I know Darksiders 2 did this as well with Samael. After him the final boss was such a push over. Shame that the game felt rushed near the end.
