Not really? The only immediate benefits it gives you is a meager amount of stats depending on which character is paired up with who (mostly for Speed in my playthrough) and immunity to Attack Stance. Blocking an attack with the meter takes multiple rounds of combat, it's something you have to plan around and it's very easy to get screwed over and waste your one block on something like a Ninja that wasn't going to do any damage during combat anyway.

You can't just pair someone up on the front line and expect them to cleave through everything like in Awakening, especially when the game starts throwing mixed groups of Str and Mag units at you.

Even FE7 was a very basic game, Fire Emblem got bad after Thracia 776 when Kaga left IS. 4 and 5 are the undisputed peak of the series, 9 was a brief return to form and awakening (and probably fates) is the worst.
you should take a look at the FE-clones Kaga directed post-IS, really neat games, much better than FE was for a while.

FE12 gameplay wise is great. It's hampered by the fact that Marth is still the guy who has to visit villages and that the character balance is a bit skewed due to increasing(though still in teh upper tiers of FE overall).
FE9 gameplay wise is piss easy.
FE10 has some great ups, but also some ridiculous downs (forcing shitty units on you, character balance mroe screwed than almost any entry, the fucking tower).
Fates/Nohr(or Conquest) has some of the best map designs in the whole series.
Taking away durability and adding buff/debbuf on weapon use has actually made for decent resource management, since in most FE series, you had no worries about inventory/gold unless you aimed for ranking runs
