The gameplay looks like it's based on the style of NES and SNES-era JRPGs and it pulls that off pretty well while still looking more modern, and the setting and art look pretty great too IMO.

I have absolutely no idea why this games visuals get such a raw deal.

The 2D assets like the trees show it's not super high budget, but that's literally the only issue I can see (and even then I feel like that works towards the classic look). Otherwise it seems to be going for a classic aesthetic in terms of proportions with a lot of use of warm reds and cold whites and blues for the general world design, and doing it pretty well.

I just watched it, and it's alright. But sort of underwhelming. I would have liked to see them be more ambitious with the character models, and render them in full detail. Rather than go chibi. I don't understand why a top down RPG can't have full scale models.

The gameplay appears to be Chrono Trigger exactly. I couldn't really tell how it's distinguishing itself. Except for the fact that it's animations are too fast. Characters are practically warping around the field, and performing their attacks with no weight.

One of the great aspects of Chrono Trigger, was watching a character run over to an enemy, use their weapon in a way that gave the impression of a strong impact, and then leap back into position. It was those nuances in their actions that made the action feel more "real" for lack of better term.

From what the trailer is showing, all of the action is speed up and weightless.

By the end of the game, the female equipment makes her practically invincible, and the wonder shot's random damage output enables her to strike enemies with insanely high damages. Essentially making her a one-shot killing machine, even before Ayla reaches a level where that's feasible.

She even gets her own hugging sprite when you save Chrono. Because the devs knew she was best girl.

Except it did. While it's true that CT had fantastic art, writing, music, level and character design, let's not downplay the battle system. It was turn-based ATB combat with an interesting spin, you had AoE techs that took in consideration the positioning of the enemies on the battlefield (which as far as I remember no other turn-based JRPG did back then) and introduced the dual and triple techs which made the combat more fresh and interesting.

Now it seems something minor and negligible, but back then it really freshened up the gameplay and made it much less "boring". Let's not delude ourselves.
