They are all campy, remember the gold that was sea mama? Their campiness is what made them so fun, it's a silly rpg that is just for fun and doesn't take itself seriously. It's like a cheesy survival horror made into a jrpg. Calling it the best JRPG ever sounds ridiculous with games like Vagrant Story and Nocturne around though.

i wont argue with the tone of the game but I want a JRPG with strong gameplay, likable characters and lolis be damned if done interesting and a story that at the very least not too serious because lets be honest: Well written stories are a rarity and some falter with their writing at times.

It's around 35 hours long if you keep progressing and doing all the quests at the same time. Probably 20 if you keep skipping quests.

SW3 is the worst entry so I guess that's that's part of the reason.

Honestly, I got to hear so much bad about SW4 but I still managed to spend some good time on it (granted Hyper Attack made it a bit tedious and the lack of text skipping was frustrating at times), SW4-2 is just Xtreme Legends by another name with less content than normal XLs.

Well I guess it's probably fine overall, though I've never actually played the DS version. I've heard of of the music though and man, the PS2 version is so much nicer I almost don't want to play teh DS version, but I probably will at least once because Debora.

DW8XL is pretty much the best entry overall, the Ambition mode is pretty so-so it gets way too grindy way too quick and you should just play it on easy to get all the animals and stuff in it.

Also the weapon system is a bit silly rock-paper-scissors but otherwise it's great.

Granted once you've experienced hyper attack it will feel slow in comparison.

ive seen that slime dlc on the psn store for like $5 that gives you the gooey weapons along with some items and item farming map access, are they the same thing?

If you're up for imports Sengoku Basara 4: Sumegihara is great although it has more focus on combos and the stages are sometimes pretty awful.

Also, Pirate Warriors 2 & 3 are great too even if you don't care about One Piece itself.

Dunno about Pirate warriors, I heard that it is good too, but I kinda can't get into One Piece stuff at all.
So I got DW Gundam (man this one is awkward to play) + DW Gundam Reborn instead.
Also have Hyrule Warriors, WO3U.
Yet to 100% any of above tho. Too many games, too little time.

I got the PC version- it's not a good entry to the DQ series but it's a good game on it's own. As far as dynasty warrirors type games go it's been my favorite so far.

I recently beat my first DQ game, V, and it was a pretty nice game with a comfy story. I would emulate that if you were interested or you could find a used one for DS for cheap.

DQ III for snes was also fan translated, and that's a good starting point as well.

Too short? The only ones that felt like that to me were the first two. VII will definitely not feel like that, everyone says the PSX version takes over 100 hours to finish easily. The 3DS version took me 138 hours (though it was my first time playing DQ VII and I certainly did take my time). On Japanese sites I've read that you can finish the game in 60-70 hours, but that's probably if you know what you're doing. DQ VIII was much shorter. I played the 3DS version and I think I did most everything except the new photo quest, the new dungeon with all the bosses, and the new SS rank I think. I did quite a bit of stuff at any rate, and to beat the game with the normal ending, beat all forms of the Dragon God, and then get the second ending it took me about 92 hours I think, 20ish of them abusing metal creatures and another 10ish hanging out in both casinos.

I'm not sure. I kinda feel missions are better in bite sized chunks, story wise it keeps going, and the endgame bosses provided interesting mechanics to learn.

Being able to switch between 4 characters on the fly was pretty cool as well, not to mention the spell mechanics that accompanied it. It just felt refreshing (and lasted longer) whereas other dynasty warriors games tend to get repetitive and old fast.
