If you have the physical version of MH, then the character data can be extracted from the cart itself, as the save is not on the sd card.
The tutorial posted before might work after all.
Might as well give it a shot if you really want that data.

Format either the SysNAND or the EmuNAND the old fashioned way (through the 3DS's "Format system memory" command)
I think there's a few extra steps you have to take if you're formatting the emuNAND or you lose everything and have to start over, so it is recommended to format the sysNAND instead, as that's a lot easier.
If you format the sysNAND, it's going to say you're going to lose everything. You won't. Just take out the SD card before it formats, everything you want to keep is saved on there.

You can update all the way to 10.3 on an o3DS, but only to 9.5 on a New 3DS.

Either way, you're basically golden. So long as you have NAND.bin backed up, you can do whatever the fuck you want to emuNAND and just restore the backup if you manage to break it beyond repair.

So I downgraded my o3ds without any issue but I'm running into problems with the n3ds I'm trying to downgrade right now.

I have all the files in the correct locations, and it takes a couple of tries to get into the downgrader, but when I press Y to run the downgrader the first step fails and I get this:

in this folder there should be exdata, don't bother with that one, make another folder called dbs, enter

go to notepad, make import.db and title.db with nothing in them, place them in the folder

unplug sd, plug in 3ds, go to emunand, enter system settings, data management, 3ds software, let it do its thing

It's actually fairly easy to keep everything in place on a new 3DS. Just back everything on your SD card up to your PC, perform the downgrading/CFWing/emuNANDing process, and then just put everything back when you're done. All your stuff will appear in your emuNAND like normal.

The biggest problem I've faced is a couple games I've bought don't want to jive with the downgraded firmware, but that's easily remedied by just downloading spoofed versions of those games.

Your saves and DLC will work like normal, DLC is a separate entity on the 3DS, if you do happen to own a game that doesn't work, just use the save backup feature on the 3DS, delete the game, install a spoofed .cia and any relevant patches, and restore the saves, and everything should work like normal. The only game I've had trouble with so far is Zelda Triforce Heroes, and doing exactly those things made it work perfectly again.
