After Mega Man 3, Capcom held contests to let fans in Japan submit their own boss designs for every Mega Man installment, and staff would then decide which ones were the best and worthy of getting into the games with a prize to the winners naturally. Start with the one that is canonically first, aka MHX. It is a good remake all things considering if you can get past the style, which I personally didn't mind anyways. Anime FMV's are also always a pro, plus it builds more on X's story and character than the SNES version.

When do we see this? But Zero series is also a hard measure, considering you never really see X fight there, as he was too fucked up by 100 years of war, and eventually sealed his physical body away. Zero was under heavy study too, so the body created for him could very well have been even better than his previous. When it came to X and Zero, it wasn't pure strength alone that got them that far anyways.

Technically X had powers that literally made him invincible if we wanna speak from a technical gameplay perspective Many Mavericks also had parts or invincibility periods that deflected your shots, but you'd still prove yourself stronger in the end. In the MHX OVA you also see Zero getting tossed away like nothing by Sigma, while X actually manages to fuck him up even if just a bit. It's presumed X was stronger by the end of the first game, at least, fully having control over that little surge of power he got in the Sigma OVA encounter.
