Really, the best units are the Holy Lancers, Holy Archers, and Berserkers.

As a unit in Fates, the more specialized you are the better.
It's pointless to useless a lot of weapons if you aren't great with any of them.

All the normal dlc maps are nostalgia fests that are basically just ramming your wall of units into a wall of units from the old games. There's nothing to them other than seeing a unit you recognize and going "Gee, I recognize that unit!"
The grinding pack should be self-explanatory; if you pay real money for in-game gold or EXP you're an idiot.
The scramble pack is pointless fluff fanservice.
The Future Past is the only one that actually adds something worthwhile to the game, and the challenge pack is decent as a set of more difficult maps compared to the main game.

Pretty much. Future Past goes more into the main plot of the game and acts as an alternate ending of sorts, while the Challenge Pack and Apotheosis are more difficult than the main game.

If you really wanted some character development, the Scramble maps (Harvest, Summer, and the Hot spring one) have some conversations that both act as fanservice and genuine character interaction. You can read those online though.

Depends on what you want/need. Saving it for units that are level 20 is the best for stat gains, but if you're really struggling or if you have a promotable unit that's already really good, you can use it earlier. I've seen one video where the player promoted Zero/Niles right before Nohr 10 Lunatic just to kill the fliers.
