First and last early access

You stand in my steam library as a marker of shame

Is that No Man's Sky?

This is what happens when you get an entire team of Idea guys and artists and nothing else.

I try to forget. But I just don't remove this game from my library to remember what I did, to never do it again.

I didnt learn right after that, I did two more stupid early access purchases. Both are shit and stuck in the forever in early access loop. Fuck me dude.
>>
>>322948303
Hey, I'm just glad they took a two week vacation like they do every holiday, they work too hard!
>>
Is there any chance that Starbound will ever be as good as Terraria? Or that it'll ever be finished? Seems like it's been out for a couple of years now...
>>
>>322949230
No.

It's too late for any of that. For just a few couple of bucks they forever tarnished their company
>>
>>322949230
No. Clueless dev team that changes their mind about the game non stop. Constantly rebuilding parts of it and working on filler content to keep their autist knights satisfied. Jumping from project to project without finishing what they started work on. This game is not redeemable, especially by this slow, lazy, directionless dev team.
>>
>>322949847
>>322950089
I know you're both right, but... I just want to believe that maybe someday I'll be able to play the game again and not all the while wish I was playing Terraria. Seems like it'll be a few more years, though, 'til it'll be anywhere near as good. And by then, probably no one will even be playing it.
>>
>>322949230
>Or that it'll ever be finished

They have managed to release a couple of huge patches over the course of the year, and 1.0 is supposedly the next major patch, so I would say yes.

> Will Starbound ever be as good as Terraria

Who knows. Starbound's EA release felt shallow to me, but I didn't enjoy Terraria at all.
>>
>>322948303
ITT: Buyers Remorse
My friends convinced me to buy Starbound and later tried to convince me to buy DayZ when I almost forgot I bought this hot garbage.
>>
Starbound WILL be finished this year. It's already better than Terraria since it can be modded.

Regardless of the bullshit Chucklefish pulled, they've been delivering lately. Teleporters, colonization, vehicles, working elevators, armor dyes, and now archaeology
>>
>>322948453
I said this too, but later ended up buying Medieval Engineers and BeamNG.Drive. No regrets. Starbound is a legitimate shitstain of a game, though.

Been consistently trying to get into it after the purchase.

Nope.

Hate the spelunking, hate the boring towns, hate the way you're walking backwards, hate the long awful fucking fetchquest starter zone, hate the dungeon and the boss it culminates in (they showcase the worst of the controls and the enemy encounter designs).

And then when I'm done Im basically playing terraria with less content and same grindtastic progression ladder.

I just. I really wanted to like it. But.
>>
Honestly if they redid progression so that each planet is random instead of a set ore type as well as giving me some sort of reason to actually stick around a damn planet I think it could be okay. Not amazing but decent.

>>
So what's the deal with this game ? Why so much hate ?
>>
I got a good chunk of enjoyable gametime with Starbound, but most of it was trying to find interesting planets with my friends. Finding that tenctacle/stormy flower petal planet was satisfying as hell. The building aspect of it was interesting, and the fighting part of it was straight up boring.
>>
>>322956416
read this thread and find out yourself. god damn.
>>
>>322956416
It has been in development hell since 2013, barely any progress, due to the fact that the devs are indecisive, incompetent fucks who don't know what to do with the game.

And good luck complaining on their forums, they'll just end up banning you for not sucking chucklefish's dick

It's a molineaux-esque mountain of lies and false promises.
Also instead of adding new content the devs have been fucking around with the basics for some years now.
I would really like to like this game, but the Progression route is so tight, there is no room for creativity. You never get the feeling that you are in charge of things and that kills a sandbox game for me.

I wanted this to be good so fucking bad. I might give it another try when they release "1.0"
>>
>>322953086
For starters, the devs are lazy cock-sucking douchebags who constantly whine about how they "work too hard" and how everyone who doesn't like the game is a cyberbully.

The actual game itself is complete bland garbage too, though. Their main point of advertisement is "TERRARIA, BUT IN SPACE!" but the only part of the game that really has to do with space is being in your ship and being at the one space-trade-station thing full of NPCs that give you fetch-quests and nothing else.
The infinite planets make building feel a lot less important, too; why bother building on more than one planet if you're gonna be hopping from planet to planet non-stop? It doesn't help that the planets are all just one big biome.

The game mostly revolves around farming for ores/weapons in pre-generated buildings, and outside of said buildings (which aren't really varied outside of the order of the buildings changing sometimes), there's literally nothing of interest. I think there's like, one pre-generated thing underground, but that's it.

Long story short, it's intensely repetitive and what gameplay is there is extremely boring and easy.

I just don't understand how they can be fine with their reputation as game devs and a company being completely destroyed with their first product. It just doesn't make sense, no one except the handful of people on their forums will ever buy a game from them again
>>
>>322962193
starbound had one extremely mediocre boss last time i played it, don't know if that's changed
the early game progression took for fucking ever, and there was pretty much no content once you left your planet
terraria in general seemed a lot better executed with a lot more to do

They already have our money.
>>
>>322962193
In Terraria you actually fight enemies and there's actual stuff underground; in Starbound, there's the same 3 enemies that just kinda scale in damage. Plus, if you know how to play Terraria, you can skip most of the farming in the game.

That being said, Starbound only has four bosses, all of which are either "thing that walks at you that you shoot at and walk away from" or "thing that flies at you that you shoot at and walk away from".
>>
>>322962734
That's the worst part. Why should they care about reputation if they got millions of $ from us?
>>
>>322962527

the steam queue is 95% early aces minecraft clones, terraria clones or survival simulators that will add so much content you will be able to play them forever. Apart form some of the better known indie studios indie games are pure cancer
>>
How do I set up nonsteam terraria server? I could make a steam server too but you need to have everyone in friends list for steam server
>>
>>322964050
You need a root or virtualserver. You can either buy one or set one up yourself. There's a server-software in the game files but you probably need to forward ports in your router-firewall and windows-firewall.

It's easier to buy a cheap x-slot gameserver from a cheap host.
>>
>>322964442
Thanks for the info but that seems like too much work anyway so I'll just start a steam server for friends instead of /v/ server
>>
>>322965079
if you can into linux then setting up a dedicated server on a linux box or virtual machine is easy

https://www.reddit.com/r/Terraria/comments/2a2gjn/how_to_run_a_dedicated_terraria_server_on_ubuntu/

of course by "can into linux" what i really mean is "can into linux server administration" because that's literally what you're doing.

>tfw mods can't save you now.

You nailed exactly what's wrong with this game.
I actually liked the game when it went dead for awhile and the modding community was just active enough to support this bloated corpse of a game for awhile. Once the Giraffe updates hit, the community was dead and the game fell out of my graces.

It's a constant reminder to why early access is shit. I had the number one review for a while, felt good steering people away from it.
>>
>>322948303
I played this for 40 hours in early access. Well worth the measly 5 dollars I spent. Sure it didn't turn out to be a sustained great, but it was at least decent fun for most of those 40 hours.
>>
Best example of a team being led by an "ideas guy" ever.

The game is just a major jambled mess with zero redeeming qualities whatsoever

>Early access terraria was ok with a lot of potential, was realized
>Early access Don't starve was ok with a lot of potential, was realized
>Suddenly every other early access survival what have you is empty promises and shit

I don't understand how this happened early access games early on were fine and just "play this kind of broken product if you want to support development and see what it's like", then it was just "I'm selling a broken game but you can't complain because it's a beta".
>>
Starbound is shit and will most likely still be shit but I have hope that 1.0 and modders can turn this game into something worthwhile.
>>
>>322962746
terraria bosses are the same way
starbound's first boss doesn't even move and you don't even shoot at it
what the fuck, did you even play the game?
i fucking hate starbound and you're wrong
>>
Am I the only one who had fun with Starbound?
I never played Terraria, so I don't know how that compares, but I've been playing Starbound every now and then with friends for many many hours.
>>
The game sucks because there is absolutely nothing to do end game. There's no real motivation to play it.
>>
I like Starbound because the UI, how it looks, how it runs, and building is far better.

I couldn't playe Terraria because the UI was complete garbage and so was building.

Shame that Starbound was pretty bland.
>>
Starbound is great for the furniture options and shit. I had fun building ocean bases and setting up tents on winter planets.

Other than that the game is kind of shallow.
>>

He probably hasn't played for a while. I haven't either but last time I played the first boss was a penguin in a UFO that didn't do a whole lot.

Is it worth trying to play this game again? I really just liked wandering around the planets collecting cool looking pets and costumes and hunting rare weapons, the outpost thing really threw me off enjoying it last time I played.

You should grab Terraria for your friends/self next sale. It's what Starbound should have been, minus the sci-fi theme.
>>
>>322974623
no
controls are still extra clunky (slower moving backwards, which is unintuitive for a platformer, all weapons take several seconds to respond to each click) and there's still no interesting endgame
