If you take any competitive FPS games seriously, refresh rate is important. If you don't, there's no point going over 60Hz. There's also no point going over 1920x1080 if your GPU doesn't have the guts for it, or if you're primarily playing ports of console games which are designed around 1600x900 or whatever. You also gotta consider the colours, if you watch a lot of movies or TV on your computer monitor. I use a 144Hz 1920x1080 monitor (Asus VG248QE) and it's awful for movies.

Less input lag, more options. Monitors usually have no speakers or terrible speakers though, so unless you have separate speakers it's not worth considering.

Are you going to get serious about competitive games? Because if not, then you should be looking for an IPS panel. These have the best color and contrast, but their response time is higher, which will put you in disadvantage when playing against other people.

Ive had a 1080, 144hz, 23", 1ms, ips for a year or so now. It's perfect for any fps game but Im seriously considering a 39.5" 4k for fun. For playing my strategy games and browsing and porn. The one I'm looking at is $489 which is good for the specs right now. I just have more money than I need.

What the fuck are you talking about? If you're getting a 60 hz signal things will at best look at 60 hz. It may even look worse since you'll get repeated frames since 144 is not a multiple of 60.
The only exception are tvs that interpolate frames algorithmically which looks like shit.
