I was ready to shell out up to $400 for the "privilege" of getting into VR ASAP, but at this pricepoint I just can't afford it.

Anyways it's a smart move. It'll sell like fucking cocaine, they knew this was the upper reasonable limit of cost people were expecting, and they shot right for that: they're the first on the market and can make the price they want. Also, they can't possibly keep up production with demand, so they need a steep entry price.

After one or two competitors drop in with competitive prices, in a year or two these will cost half the launch price.

The headsets were a lot more expensive back then and the tech was absolute garbage. If you compare this release to anything before it, it's an absolute bargain, but to any person who doesn't know this (or just doesn't want to throw ridiculous amounts of money at new tech), the current price point is absolutely absurd.

It's for a niche of a niche. According to the stats, only 1% of all PC gamers even have a rig powerful enough to support a rift. And probably only a fraction of them will be willing to shell out an additional $600
