As someone who never spends a cent on mobile games it's nice to find one where I can still get all the content.You get a fairly insane amount of mythril just from logging in and doing the weekly event. It helps that the most OP strategy in the game is incredibly cheap to set up and can carry you all the through the game and most of the weekly events.

As someone who has played it for over 2 years, it's even worse now. Back when I started, you could reroll for a good leader and clear everything with enough effort and skill, which is pretty good for mobile game standards. Now rerolling won't even get you that far anymore, because you generally want a full gacha exclusive team for doing the hardest dungeons.

Kingdom Rush, it's been my go-to since the flash version on PC.

I think PAD has enough content to be enjoyed outside of the hardest dungeons, but when it comes down to it you're right. For most descended dungeons it seems like your ability to progress is determined by the diversity of your box. Looking at at the top ten for the recent ranking dungeon makes me imagine mountains of gems spiraling down a funnel.

How do we save the world from mobile gaming?

I can accept to some extent that mobile gaming is the future, and it shouldn't need to be a bad thing. The smartphone is just really accessible as a gaming device, and it has a huge install base, so of course developers and publishers see potential in it. And with how powerful smartphones are becoming, technology isn't really holding back mobile games that much anymore either.

But then there's all these dubious practices that developers apparently have found out are really effective for games like these. Mechanics that only allow you to play for a few minutes at a time unless you spend money. Content locked behind microtransactions with RNG, sometimes requiring people to spend literally thousands of dollars to unlock a character, which might be required to beat content in the game. Competitive events where the winners are literally determined by who spends most money. Grindy gameplay to keep people occupied between scarce content releases.

What needs to happen for us to escape this grim fate?

Don't worry about it, mobile gaming isn't going to take over the market and the reason is because handheld games have been popular for decades but never as big as console or pc. Just because developers are making games for mobile devices doesn't mean that they'll stop making games for the systems even if micro-transactions pretty much pay for the game's development. The market simply isn't self sustainable for companies.
