Hey guys. What exactly is the difference between /v/ and /vg/.

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

Hey guys.

What exactly is the difference between /v/ and /vg/. I see alot of hate towards /vg/ here on /v/ and the only difference I saw was that they have long threads for just one game. Can someone explain why there is a /vg/ when we have /v/ already.
>>
/vg/ is a place where you can actually discuss games unlike /v/ where autists shitpost in every thread
>>
>>322610281
Because the generals were glogging up the /v/ catalog and they stayed up and active for days crowding out the more general vidya discussion (read: Funposting) so the decission was made to create /vg/ for generals and /v/ returned to the status of /b/ 2.0
>>
>>322610281
/vg/ is mindless shitposting, /v/ is mindful shitpostig
>>
>>322610281
circlejerking
>>
>>322610478
>>322610517
I came here to say something along the lines of these.
>>
>>322610474
So like the guy above you said. /vg/ is a place where you can actually discuss games? I like /v/ more
>>
>>322610676
generals are better for actual discussion, more general threads turn into shitpost-city before you can say "derailed"
>>
>>322610281
/v/ is where you go for memes and off topic theads that get 400 replies. /vg/ is where you go to ERP with other fat neckbeards pretending to be catgirls.
>>
>>322610912
That came out wrong, generals are more focused on a genre or a game, whereas /v/ threads meander from topic to topic so it's much easier to derail threads with shitposting that would just be ignored as off-topic bait in /vg/

the concept of /vg/ is temporary discussion. where a game might have limited popularity, you can only discuss so much until it devolves into cancer-posting.
/v/ on the other hand is an entirely different entity. born from hate, rivalry and the infinite sea of possibilities, /v/ is for shitposting about things you don't like.
you will never find people on /v/ talking about how much they like something. if you do, it is soon followed by hate. that is the nature of the internet.
it is intended to cycle forever here in /v/. a new FOTM comes out, everyone circlejerks, it gets too popular, then everyone shitposts about how much they hate it.
if you're stupid enough like me to get caught in the maelstrom, you will waste all your time here. it's as bad as information snacking in social media like facebook.
you are doomed to spend the rest of your time here, repeating endlessly through waves of rage and disgust. but god damn is it fun.
>>
/vg/ generals are pretty reliable, some autist always remakes them so you are guaranteed to find what you're looking for.

On /v/ sometimes weeks pass without a serious or enjoyable thread.
>>
>>322610676
It depends on what you call discussion. Shitposters saying bullshit is more discussion than image dumps and waifu talk
>>
>>322610281
epic pic bro! XD
>>
>>322610281
/vg/ is where you go to talk with people who like "game" if there's enough to sustain thread.
/v/ is where you go to talk with people who don't and rare examples of niche games that aren't big enough.
>>
/vg/ is r/videogames/ where people go to intensely circlejerk indefinitely about a particular franchise
>>
/vg/ is where all the worst fanbases get booted off to, where they're sent to fester and hopefully die.
It was created because generals became a problem here on /v/; too many threads about a particular game were created and discussion tended to spill into unrelated threads regardless. It usually takes a couple weeks of a fanbase being a problem for mods to begin consistently enforcing the no generals rule, mostly because young fanbases are refractory and will shit up the board further if they're induced to follow the rules. Pokémon, FNaF, Smash, and Undertale are prime examples on /v

>What exactly is the difference between /v/ and /vg/.

In a nutshell v2.0 :

>Once in a blue moon, some funny anon posts a vidya related joke or posts something funny on /v/
>Anons join in adding to the jokes in different ways , almost everyone's happy "best thread on /v/" scenario happens, good times ensue
>Encouraged, Anons strive to try to post funny shit in the future

>Tell a joke or post something funny on /vg/
>Tripfags become threatened and begin samefagging as anonymous posters to shut the jokes down before it starts
>Everyone gets mad, post that led to the implosion of the thread is saved by shitposters as pasta, and is now a threadly meme for causing shitstorms
>That shitpost/memepost is now the accepted "funny post" that the tripfags/namefags don't find offensive, possibly due to their hand in its creation
>Discourages any real attempts to be funny or share experiences ever again, while waifuposting grows ever stronger

Sometimes it's ok though
>>
/vg/ is for actual discussion and circlejerking
/v/ is for 12 year olds to shitpost in
>>
>>322610281
So you don't remember the before-time?

I, for one, don't miss the time when the front page was nothing but hon/lol generals.

People are close but they're not hitting on it

So the 4chan model works by having a high thread turnover. Threads people aren't actively discussing fall off the board quickly and threads people are active in stay on.

Somewhere along the line enough people decided they wanted 4chan to be more like other forums. Groups of 4-10 people would start "general" threads with no larger topic than "X game" and then keep that thread alive and bumped for hours or days despite there only being a few participants.

It only takes a few of those groups being active before the front page of /v/ is nothing but pointless shitty "general" threads.

So they were given a containment board. Don't fool yourself into thinking /vg/ is anything else.

>WOW THIS IS FUCKING GARBAGE I'M NOT GONNA WASTE ANY MONEY ON THIS

/vg/
>WOW THIS IS FUCKING GARBAGE I'LL KEEP PLAYING IT OH GOD THIS IS HELL
basically, /v/ thinks all women are whores and is single, while /vg/ think all women are whores and is married
>>
/v/ is negative towards all video games and /vg/ is a hugbox for your game of choice
>>
/vg/ is where /v/ discuss games that it likes
/v/ is where /v/ discuss games that it hates
>>
/vg/ its for blind fanboys to keep their 24/7 threads up all the fucking time
/v/ is for shilling thats why we have 24/7 threads up when flavor of the month its released

okay realtalk

I, like you, did not really know why there would be a difference. Eventually I went there for specific generals.

Basically, /vg/ is generals. You don't really browse there, you just go to the general of the topic you're interested in.

Sometimes they're really useful and helpful generals like the homebrew general.

Sometimes they're like the FNAF general which just became drawfag circlejerking, which was kinda entertaining but if you actually wanted to discuss the game and not look at furry porn and drawfags drawing other drawfags then you probably would be disappointed.

Depends on the fandom I guess. Undertale general looks like it's the new FNAF general from what I looked at.
