The problem is more the sheer amount of promises they made that are almost all way over the top. Add on the crazy prices for buying ships and that's where the hate comes from.

Dunno I spent $30 and figure I'll get something fun out of it by the end. At the moment you can see the framework coming together, but it still has a hell of a long ways to go. Universe crashes like mad for me right now.

The original pitch wasn't that incredibly impossible to begin with. Take the guys that worked on Cryengine and make it work for space, be able to walk around a ship and man stations, EVA, shoot people, perform a few professions, and also land on planets.

The only thing that has significantly changed is the quantity and quality of the ships and landing locations, more professions, and flying in the atmosphere of the procedural planets. Only the last one was not expected to be in the game anytime near release, but it turns out that the Crytek devs they had been swallowing up were wizards.
