People only hype up Shantae because the developers are "Based" for doing cute/sexy and 'lewd' designs and animations in the age of Boogiemen complaining about anything sexy and unreal in games and the Shantae developers are just continuing to do what theyve been doing since the first game back in 2002.

Shantae has an appealing character design, but theres better ones out there and the fanbase is irritating now because the game hasnt been forgotten by time.

Back in February I played the whole Shantae series in a month to see what the appeal is.

I liked it! They weren't the best games I've ever played, but they were really honest. The protagonist is endearing, the artstyle is charming and colorful, the writing is legitimately funny sometimes, the platforming is fun, nothing about it was really manufactured or patronizing. And the level design of the dungeons was actually god-tier, like a level design brilliance on par with Miyazaki's Souls games. IDK why people don't notice or talk about that more, I was actually really impressed.

My only criticism were:

1) The first game actually had the best animations and artstyle. Was never quite as good since then.
2) The first game also had some janky-ass combat and required a lot of grinding of the dancing minigame/gambling to really get anywhere. I spent the most time playing that one for that reason alone.
3) Third game's character writing is better, but the humor isn't quite what it used to be. Sometimes the game would just put in pop culture references in place of actual jokes.
4) The whole series has a lot of expensive upgrades for new moves that turn out to be totally useless.

But overall really fun! I don't really find Shantae herself to be fappable or anything, but she's cute. I'm wary of the upcoming forth game, it's really chibi, the backgrounds are 3D and the animations look like they use a lot of Flash tweening.

Ya done goofed. Also the portrait art for HGH is going to be the same as TPC, so it's still god tier.

I think the only game worth playing is Pirate's Curse and hopefully Half-Genie Hero. The first one has some god awful enemy placement along with the shitty night system and the transformations taking forever. Risky's Revenge is short but the transformations are still a pain and just getting into a dungeon takes forever.

Pirate's Curse makes me want to use old 90s slang.
The controls really do feel "tight" in a way the previous 2 don't.

One thing this series never got right though, enemies never flinch/pushback when hit.

What do I know OP? I only finished Pirates Curse. I still have Riskys Renevge on my 3DS, that fucking game I swear its pushing the rage out of me for some reason. People would disregard my opinion as "casual" all the time.

I absolutely fell in love with Pirates Curse though and lament the fact that I finished it so quickly. Hype for Half-Genie Hero.

Anyway, I'd like to see those flaws fixed, too. HGH looks okay and all, but having the first game's stylistic sensibilities would have been nice.
