Going from 1 to 2, they added in additional item world changes (making the item world less bullshit in it's random placements and such) added the fellony and dark court systems, an additional way to allow for the passage of bills.

Disgaea 3 did away with fellonies and the Dark Court, and instead introduced Magichange, allowing monsters to turn into weapons for use by the humanoid characters, and added that monsters could act as a bounce place for thrown enemies, letting them bounce of of them and continue along through the throw. Disgaea 3 also intorduced Evilities, skills that characters would have and would allow them to change how their stats worked for attack or defense, allow them to buff or debuff characters around them or themselves, or across the whole map. It also changed how mana was spent, skills ranked up and made more powerful.

Disgaea 4 introduces the fusing mechanic , allowing frnedly monsters to be fused together to make larger more powerful characters, along with revamping the capture mechanic, allowing you to do more things with captured enemy units. It also allowed you, for the first time, to rearrange your hub world to however you liked, and could allow for special abilities to be unlocked this way.

Disgaea 2 has the fewest changes, while the changes made in 3 and 4 drastically altered how you could play the game, and have been carried forward into D2 and Disgaea 5

I don't have a PS4 (yet) but my biggest gripe is how flimsy the DLC is for these games. Oh boy a few new missions and fan favorite characters who add nothing to the main game play. I'd love that for every character DLC there is a mission that comes with them in order to get them or give them something special. One of the best parts of getting extra characters in the older games was you had to earn them. Give me a bang for my buck.

The next project will show if they sink or swim, but the DLC is getting more and more ridiculous as the series go on.

D5 seems to be doing fine? It's only in Japan that it bombed because the series has weaker sales there and the game released at the same time as Bloodborne.

DD2 sold out all LE, dunno how it did in the end in the west. But the crash bug probably affected sales a lot.
