Renne referred to herself in third person in the Jap script, and this was actually important and the reasons for it are revealed in 3rd.

It's eggscelent. The gameplay (combat) is grid-based turn-based RPG but with subtleties like crafts and the way Arts (the equivalent of magic) works keep things interesting and gives the combat extra depth.
Outside of combat it's kind of like every other RPG with town, shops, etc. but the towns feels alive because there's very large amount of NPCs with different lines.
There's also tons of dialogue so the game is kind of 1/3rd Visual Novel and 2/3rd RPG.

Battles take place in a small grid-based field. You have a movement range (in squares) each turn and physical attacks have ranges based on the weapon being used (effectively the character). Spells have unlimited range but take time to cast and can be cancelled by hitting the caster with a cancelling skill before they activate it. Skills have various effects but are mainly stronger physical attacks, and you get CP from dealing and taking damage to use them. At 100 CP you can use a special, which gets stronger up to the max of 200 CP.

Turns are based on speed and turn order can be influenced based on actions taken, and some skills can delay turns. Turns will randomly have special effects added to them, such as restoring 10% HP or gaining 10 STR for whoever acts in a turn, which can be seen in the turn order. Specials become important here because you can use specials to interrupt turn order.

Really though, the battle system isn't very good. Lots of attacks are based around positioning, and yet one of the biggest issues is that in both games you can't move precisely and attack in the same turn; if you want to attack you can only move to where the game makes you go to attack. if you want to move to a specific square, you have to spend your turn to only move. Battles are slow as fuck and there's no skipping or speeding up any animations.
In FC the difficulty is a joke and the only challenging fights you'll ever come across are battle-trapped chests you can access earlier than you're meant to.
SC goes the other way and makes every enemy a damage sponge and many bosses heal themselves as well, so the combat becomes even more of a chore than it was before while still not being particularly difficult.

I don't think you quite understand. There's nothing wrong with the players thinking "well her way of talking is weird" or "this character is weird". Characters talking in third person are usually supposed to invoke such a reaction to begin with. Simply thinking that the character is weird is not going to reveal what their motivations for acting that way are, but stopping the character from acting weird because you don't want them to come across as weird when they do have reasons for acting that way is Xseed's fuckup.

The gameplay changes. I'm not sure of what exactly was changed, I've never played any of these games but I'm looking to get into them. Apparently Evolution added in new artes, new monsters, and some other stuff. I'm asking because I'm trying to decide which version to get. I was just going to either get the Japanese PC or PS3 version, but it sounds like the English PC versions adds some new stuff in. I'm having fun so far, just got done with chapter 1, and holy hell, i loved the enforcers theme song. But what the fuck happened to Kloe's stats? I remenber her being way better than this in FC, her cast damage, HP and attack are pure shit, and of course, she's still stuck with the 3 forced water slots. Does she get better? Her craft to lower defense and attack from enemies seems to have taken a nerf too, before it was godlike.

So I'm at ch5 and I've only found 3 Gambling Jack books with the last being the one Oliver gave me back in chapter 2.
Where the fuck are they hiding them really? It's not like I've been neglecting exploration. I've pretty much went anywhere before progressing the main quest and went everywhere again at the end of every chapter and talked to everyone. I'd expect to at least get one more at this point.
