Explain to me how this game is "well written".
Maybe you should keep playing instead of dropping such a massive game in the prologue chapter.
Playing through the first one. The Carnelia Books seem like the most evil JRPG missables since the ones in Tales games. Chapter 3's window came and went between two cutscenes and I was dumb enough to miss it even with a list of them next to me. Guess I'll do them in NG+
This happened earlier and I thought it was funny.
Also I'm noticing pretty big framerate issues in some areas. Is that just something everyone lives with or is there a video setting I should adjust? Seems weird for an 11 year old game to have these issues on a modern machine.
That's because you weren't supposed to see that, as the game was originally made for 4:3 displays. It's only the English releases that support widescreen.
Reminder that due to both the editors not being familiar with 3rd while working on SC, and Xseed's penchant for seriously liberal scripts, that they've fucked up a major plot point regarding a character through localising their mannerisms.
Renne referred to herself in third person in the Jap script, and this was actually important and the reasons for it are revealed in 3rd.
>Everyone's standards suddenly become the highest possible when it comes to videogame writing.
Why does this happen? This is people claim all vidya writing is shit. People overlook flaws in other mediums, but when games do it, it's suddenly bad.
It play like almost any other JRPG.
Though in TiTS you have an SRPG style grid for moving around in. You have crafts that works as your special moves and arts which work as your spells and such.
It plays like a standard JRPG except you can move around SRPG style in fights. You have a limit break type element as well but you can spend smaller amounts of it on character unique abilities in addition to the big move at 100/200%. Most ability learning comes from socketing Quartz (sort of like materia) in specific combinations.
It's eggscelent. The gameplay (combat) is grid-based turn-based RPG but with subtleties like crafts and the way Arts (the equivalent of magic) works keep things interesting and gives the combat extra depth.
Outside of combat it's kind of like every other RPG with town, shops, etc. but the towns feels alive because there's very large amount of NPCs with different lines.
There's also tons of dialogue so the game is kind of 1/3rd Visual Novel and 2/3rd RPG.
>What does it play like?
Like the writers need to hire and editor.
OVER A BAZILION OF KANJI doesn't mean much if you game world is just another generic mcfantasy.
Sorry about that.
Doesn't he have his own tsundere childhood friend guard stuck with him?
Disregard >>315526209 it's nothing like Grandia.
Battles take place in a small grid-based field. You have a movement range (in squares) each turn and physical attacks have ranges based on the weapon being used (effectively the character). Spells have unlimited range but take time to cast and can be cancelled by hitting the caster with a cancelling skill before they activate it. Skills have various effects but are mainly stronger physical attacks, and you get CP from dealing and taking damage to use them. At 100 CP you can use a special, which gets stronger up to the max of 200 CP.
Turns are based on speed and turn order can be influenced based on actions taken, and some skills can delay turns. Turns will randomly have special effects added to them, such as restoring 10% HP or gaining 10 STR for whoever acts in a turn, which can be seen in the turn order. Specials become important here because you can use specials to interrupt turn order.
Really though, the battle system isn't very good. Lots of attacks are based around positioning, and yet one of the biggest issues is that in both games you can't move precisely and attack in the same turn; if you want to attack you can only move to where the game makes you go to attack. if you want to move to a specific square, you have to spend your turn to only move. Battles are slow as fuck and there's no skipping or speeding up any animations.
In FC the difficulty is a joke and the only challenging fights you'll ever come across are battle-trapped chests you can access earlier than you're meant to.
SC goes the other way and makes every enemy a damage sponge and many bosses heal themselves as well, so the combat becomes even more of a chore than it was before while still not being particularly difficult.
The movement thing is clearly a trade-off choice for the player. Combat speed can be irritating though, so it's good that in later games they eventually figured out people wanted the option to skip animations.
Yeah you have to copy&paste into address bar. Works for me.
Funny how I just read those lines and now that I started the game up thats exactly where I stopped
Probably because third-person speech in English is incredibly weird looking and never occurs naturally. You can get away with that in Japanese because it doesn't flag that anything unusual is happening, but normal English speakers will immediately assume something is up.
There are dozens of games that do that.
What made Grandia unique was the ATB representation and the need to time your attacks based on the animations and distance. Grandia also had a significantly larger focus on it than most games, given that your two basic attacks are a stronger normal attack or a weaker cancelling attack.
>Probably because third-person speech in English is incredibly weird looking and never occurs naturally. You can get away with that in Japanese because it doesn't flag that anything unusual is happening
Come on now, just because it shows up in anime doesn't mean it's anywhere near close to natural. You should be aware of this.
>but normal English speakers will immediately assume something is up.
Not really, since it's a common enough thing to see in fiction, and particularly in Japanese fiction.
Either way, "it seems unnatural" is a poor excuse for changing a mannerism when it's clear that they had no idea it was relevant to the plot.
I didn't say it was natural, I said that it isn't a flag for weirdness. Japanese players will not see third-person speech coming from a little girl and think something weird is going on because that's a trope they have to put up with all the time.
It rarely happens in English works unless the person doing it is meant to be noticeably weird, so yes, people will notice it. I'd like you to list some native English material featuring third-person speech where the audience isn't meant to pay attention to the fact that it's happening at all but the overall work is still supposed to have naturalish dialogue.
>It rarely happens in English works unless the person doing it is meant to be noticeably weird, so yes, people will notice it.
I don't think you quite understand. There's nothing wrong with the players thinking "well her way of talking is weird" or "this character is weird". Characters talking in third person are usually supposed to invoke such a reaction to begin with. Simply thinking that the character is weird is not going to reveal what their motivations for acting that way are, but stopping the character from acting weird because you don't want them to come across as weird when they do have reasons for acting that way is Xseed's fuckup.
>finished all quests, check board, orbal and equip, go to academy
>yo man, you missed Sunday school, say goodbye to your complete BP run
I hated this shit in FC. Good to know it is back.
There's something much more wrong with it when removing the character's weirdness is breaking the twist entirely, because the twist simply does not work if the character refers to themselves in first person.
Again, this is a fuckup stemming from the editors not being familiar with 3rd.
>Did the photo quest where you had to take a picture of the top of the tower
>Did it early
>Was suppose to wait to when Dorthy joins as an NPC so she can take a better shot for max BP.
That contains nothing I didn't already know and only confirms that it wouldn't have worked in English. The simple fact is that third-person speech isn't a huge red flag to Japanese people like it is to English speakers. It virtually gives away
that there's dissociation at workif the character isn't being played for laughs.
>thinking gooks can write
They write like 8 year olds. If you took an eight year old and made him write something. You couldn't tell it apart from something a gook wrote in a game/show.
no game is ever well writen, people just like to pretend some do in order to shit on other games saying that the writing sucks.
those people should just go read books instead, playing video games for the story and complaining about how they are writen is stupid. its a video game.
I don't know about that. In Japanese it's used as a cuteness/silliness marker, which is why it works for her there and why the reveal that it was never a marker at all is effective. When it happens in English works it still represents comedy but tends more towards "this person is crazy, which is funny." The problem is that you end up pointing toward the very thing the dialogue is supposed to be concealing.
In the end I think this is just a matter of where we stand on localisation. I don't think that it warrants a change because I don't think that they should be localising the mannerisms for the west in the first place, and rather think that people should be expected to understand the meanings of the mannerisms instead.
Clearly though Xseed are far on the opposite end of that ideal.
I agree. I could probably put up with her speaking third-person in English too because I'm used to it from my Chinese cartoons, but I'm not upset that they chose a more mainstream approach to rendering her lines.
I always stop when that part plays
>Have to visit Wolf Fortress in ch2
>at no point in the game are you told that you're supposed to go the opposite way and talk to miner at Kaldia Tunnel for +3 extra BP
fuck you Falcom
I never bothered undubbing FC but in SC Estelle and Analace sounded like raspy old hags and I couldn't stand it anymore. God damn their Jap voices are so much better.
Well she is literally voice by an old woman
by japanese standards
>everyone says Agate is hot shit because of CP spam
>literaly only 50 cp per craft use
>do damage every 3 turns since I want to use the s-break
>requires me to heal him every other turn
>even fucking estelle is outdamaging this fuck
>agate now gets 150cp co-
>at the cost of 75% of his hp
>its not even max cp
>dies to a fucking papercut afterwards
>theres a character that can restore 40 cp for everyone
On top of all this agate is slow as molasses and has paper thin magic defense. Why in the fuck do people think this character is good anyway? Dps-wise I can get more out of just buffing someone or even agate himself and spamming attack, crafts or magic and using the cp refresh accessory + Kevin.
Never really thought that about her voice.
>get a gather ingredients quest at the start of a chapter
>you're most likely going to have all of them right away
>you have to wait until 3/4 into the chapter and talk to a guy to get extra bp
it makes sense once you do it but it's still bullshit
Theres nothing you can do about that anon.
If you wanna cp spam then you need a dedicated healing faggot and a dedicated earthwall faggot on his ass. On top of that its not even doing full 200cp damage. How is this an efficient way of killing things? Its more like an incredibly slow way to go about killing things.
She's right, cute girls are the best thing in the universe.
>make actual not-shit design with good personality and not edgy as fuck character who is meant to be a dark and mysterious fuccboi
>turns into that abomination of a design in ao
I was mostly talking about fc where he only has the 50cp one and boss fights in sc's case but...
>have to go into menu after every encounter
Holy fuck no thanks. I wish I had gone with Schera for Aerial spam.
ch4. I was not ready for the feels
Meh, somehow mustered up the energy to complete the main story in 44 hours, don't think I have the stamina to play the second part. The game has quite a pleasant aesthetic but it's just boring, plus the battle system is flawed.
>Simple shirt, trousers, and vest
>One single belt around his waist
>Straps holding his arm guards in place
Vest and pointy shirt are a bit iffy but otherwise a nice looking and practical design. 7/10
Tank top, trousers, and boots
>Three belts on top, two belts on trousers
>One belt on top is holding his pouches so that's okay at least, but the trousers belts aren't doing anything
>Straps on trousers doing nothing
>Straps on boots doing nothing
>Bandages on wrists to hide where he's cutting himself
>Huge scarf to hide his angst
Throws most practicality out the window, looks like something an emo kid doodled in his sketchbook in class. 4/10
It's called a joke, anon.
>I am not even seeing the belts you are exaggerating on, I only see one.
The gameplay changes. I'm not sure of what exactly was changed, I've never played any of these games but I'm looking to get into them. Apparently Evolution added in new artes, new monsters, and some other stuff. I'm asking because I'm trying to decide which version to get. I was just going to either get the Japanese PC or PS3 version, but it sounds like the English PC versions adds some new stuff in. If that's the case I might just get it so long as I can patch in Japanese text. If I had a Vita I'd probably just get Evolution, but I don't.
>design has to be practical for it to be cool.
Is Schera's design bad too? Maybe Zanes design is also awful since he'a carrying around a bottle. What about Tita? She has those giant dangling things in her back. Kek princess wears a school uniform, who the fuck uses a school uniform in battle?
It doesn't have to be practical to be cool, but it certainly helps.
The biggest problem I have with his SC design is the stupid looking scarf and bandages, anyway. He went from a simple and practical design to Falcom's best attempt at OW THE EDGE.
It's a pretty exaggerated amount when none of the straps are doing anything, and his FC design had four straps that were all serving a purpose.
But what are those straps doing? Holding his ribcage together? Providing diagonal thigh support for his gammy right leg? Covering the "everyone loves assymetry" hole in his other trouser leg? Decorating a part of the boot that in no way requires straps?
Full VA and ost redone as well
>ow the edge
For starters theres a good reason for him to be edgy, and considering Fc I think he's what you call edgy done right.
I don't think his dialogue is edgy at all in SC especially since he's treating the capuas as allies.
>For starters theres a good reason for him to be edgy
I know, that but it doesn't mean the design doesn't look dumb.
>I don't think his dialogue is edgy at all in SC especially since he's treating the capuas as allies.
I'd disagree there, he was being pretty damn edgy the first time he showed up. Pic related made me furrow my brow.
Some are okay, some are pretty fucking bad like Estelle and Anelace.
I don't look right at all. What have they done to me?
It ain't right.
Looks like the same amount of facial hair as the old version of cassius.
That is not even a little bit okay.
No wait, here's her sad face.
I need a missables guide already. Already fucked up the Anton achievement somehow even though I talked to everyone I could find in the prologue and chapter 1.
Currently almost done with chapter 2 and think I will hit max BP, but a long way to go.
Priest Adventures and Lloyds harem never
Nah right is bad.
It is shorter, but the "side content" in 3rd are hardly "side content". 3rd has pretty much no NPC dialogue and all of that "side content" dialogue comes from memory doors.
Already my favorite character.
I'm having fun so far, just got done with chapter 1, and holy hell, i loved the enforcers theme song. But what the fuck happened to Kloe's stats? I remenber her being way better than this in FC, her cast damage, HP and attack are pure shit, and of course, she's still stuck with the 3 forced water slots. Does she get better? Her craft to lower defense and attack from enemies seems to have taken a nerf too, before it was godlike.
I do miss the silly empty chest messages tough. I heard they plan on adding then later because they didn't have time for it?
So hey, this is just a question because i'm curious, but, i heard that
Ouroboros makes appearances even after the third trails in the sky. Are they the defined main antagonist to the entire series,or does it change later?
>He doesn't take the country's heir into battle against almost superhuman freaks of nature.
So I'm at ch5 and I've only found 3 Gambling Jack books with the last being the one Oliver gave me back in chapter 2.
Where the fuck are they hiding them really? It's not like I've been neglecting exploration. I've pretty much went anywhere before progressing the main quest and went everywhere again at the end of every chapter and talked to everyone. I'd expect to at least get one more at this point.
That meme really needs to die in a fire.
I finished chapter 1 so far, and i have 2, one from the lodge in the prologue, one from trading medals from gambling and nothing else.
Not sure if i missed any, but i sure found the whole book series in FC to be much easier to find.
Yeah I got those two and the next one is pretty much unmissable.
I don't even know how much books there are this time. there's an achievement suggesting it's 16 but I find it hard to believe.
Enforcer theme so good
Fucking hell why would you ever cast this. Casting La Crest and La Forte combined is like 3 times cheaper. And this is with Ep Cut 3 no less.
Fuck. You can play those games just for the music.
Why do peope here shit on her so much aside from poor stats? I mean, so far it seems she confessed to having liked Joshua to Estelle and being completely chill about it, or does it still escalate in some way even tough she knows Estelle and Joshua like each other? Only done with chapter 1 here so.
True in a way, i do like most of the original soundtrack due to sounding more "clean", but some of then sound much more hype to listen to in my opnion at least, enforcer being one of then.
Going to do an EVO run by the end of this year
Hyped as fuck.
I hope they release third EVO next year too
3 Water Locks/Orbment Line is shit
Useless whenever Kevin is around in both SC and the entirety of 3rd
Still wants to fuck Joshua and is still a boring princess.
Does nothing important except for one thing in SC.
I can't fucking wait for the reunion scene voiced man
Depending on your standards, linda cube and popolocrois 2 are pretty well written.
Of course, that depends on your standards, and the bar you're setting.
Wasn't it more of a "i'll get this off my chest, so i can finnaly move on from liking you after you reject me" because by that point in time she alredy knew there was no chance.
Where is the legendary beast in sen?
I really want the third to come out in english. And the crossbell games. And I wish they would hurry up and release Cold Steel.
I loved the two Trails in the Sky games so much, and I suspect the overall storyline that ties all of the arcs together is really good. I hope we get them all eventually.
So like does Sen retain the same level of likable characters and storyline as Sora, and ao/zero? From the images i've seen so far, it feels like they went full high school setting plus pandering mode on those.
>When does Sen get good anon
it doesn't get "good"
It gets less "painful"
If you're feeling pain right now, it will go off in 2.
But the only part of Sen that gets to a "okayish, sorta good" level is the intermission in 2
and then it goes back to just ok level
It may look that way, but if Sen ties in with Sora then it has to be good if you can look beyond the school setting. Personally, I want to play it to see the drama in the empire and fight ouroboros some more.
Is Cassius THAT fucking strong? I mean, he is a normal human or is there something else to it? Cause the way they talk about his strenghts and other abilities feels like he's some sort of god.
Are there other overly powerful characters like him?
Only reason I'm even playing them is to get to that intermission even though I know what happens in it.
It's not even worth playing both games for it to be honest.
At this point, both you and me are like housewives returning to an abusive husband.
I quit the series after Sen though
Canonically, I don't think anyone can beat him in a straight fight if hes using a sword. There is a reason why a great many evil plots first step is "get Cassius the fuck out of here".
I have the first one on my Vita but never played it, should I get on it? Is it gud? I love jRPGs (that's why I bought it) with all kinds of battle systems
>saga frontier 2
>final fantasy style battle system
WIll I enjoy it? Is it true you can move freely during battle?
Gee, what a great contribution you've made to the discussion. If you're not getting the Lionheart then there's no reason for you to even waste my time reading your one-word response. Piss off.
Actually, if you weren't retarded, you would know I did more than "ask a question." I invited a discussion regarding the artbook and the presence of CS2 spoilers. Lrn2/reading.
nigga wat. I don't see a "Yes" anywhere.
>Giving so much of a fuck about the opinion of random people on 4chan that you don't do what you want
top kek. Leave the guy alone. Literally anyone on here can say anything they want about a game. Me, I'll not take my advice from 4chan.
I hear the Vita version is still somewhat worse.
Then again that was a while ago.
OP just doesn't understand the concept of different characters having different personalities and ways of speaking. That's why he's confused because he just doesn't "get" analace's character.
>Asking me to form an opinion about a game in a language I don't even understand.
Nigga wat. Do you think I'm retarded or something? Maybe you just don't understand what RPGs are..
Is it that bad? I mean, i'd expect that the moment they decided to go pander route, it'd drop in quality, but not THAT much.
Does the story at least develop more of what may be the end goal of all these connected events and Ouroboros?
You sound like you're taking these people too seriously. They are randoms on 4chan, and japfags at that. If anything they probably just want to ruin the game's release in english because they're butthurt fags.
Just the usual, like somewhat longer load times and worse framerate. I don't use my PS3 anymore, and playing it on a handheld feels nice.
No. At least not anymore.
But importers are always wrong about the quality of Japanese games or you're just people parroting second hand opinions.
>forgiving the total lame "saving their lives to make them make peace with each other" situation
>forgiving the totally shit animations (and no, previous falcom games almost always had fluid 3D animation, even Nayuta)
Are you serious? How much low standards can a person have? Are you going to say felghana and Celceta had animation as janky and nonfluid as this ?>>315553092
Oh man, I pray to heavens this is bait.
Nope, it's not about lying. It's just the fact that the people on 4chan are, for the most part, shit. I wouldn't get my opinion on a video game from /v/ any more than I would get my political opinions from /pol/, nor would I EVER actually ask for advice on /adv/. Just the way these things go.
You can't really talk about Sen unless you want the thread shitposted into oblivion.
Nothing, they're pretty much the best games the series has to offer. People that hate them are just contrarian ass holes.
Come on now, don't derail the thread, we were having such a nice time just talking casually about the series until people started talking about Sen and starting the usual banter of shitposting and finger pointing.
>Importers hype of Tales of Graces
>The battle system was great, it had some great skits, but everything else was shit
I don't know how to call this one.
>Importers said that the Xillias were mediocre
>Importers said Zestiria was shit
And it was
>Said that DQ VII and VIII's 3DS versions were great
And they were.
I don't know, from my limited experience, they're not as bad as you say. Then again I'm sort of among their number, though I just pirate the games usually.
It really seems to me that most people that complain about Sen are super elitist and hold the series up to some impossible standard.
I'll wait until after playing the game to form an opinion on it.
I actually started to see more people defending Sen after the localization announcement
With all Xseed's bantering and saying they are looking for new ways to "advertise the series"
then you have one of Sen's voice actors showing up in a thread, and they acknowledging that
One of Xseed's employees that gives blowjobs in the office is known to lurk 4chan
It's not hard to spot them defending their sen pre-orders, after all, if cold steel flops, how can they deal with falcom for the other games of the series?
It's not holding up to some "impossible standard"
I just dont want to feel pain while playing something.
Is that what you call impossible standard?
You think there's only one scene like this in Sen?>>315553092
Am I asking too much?
Maybe you should explain exactly what is wrong with it if you want to be taken seriously. Try to avoid looking like a graphicsfags when we're just coming off the release of a game that runs on graphing calculators.
It's not hunched over in pain over it.
It's from chapter 1 forward, it starts painful, and doesn't settle down
I'll be damned, I never felt that playing any of the games of the series
It could've been done better, of course, but I still enjoyed watching it. If you're a purist then I can see why you would hate it. Personally, I really liked the way they portrayed Estelle, although they should have made her more competent than they did. She seemed like too much of a huge failure at everything.
Try a motion that doesn't seem like puppets in a fucking show is a start
Maybe a motion, at least as good as celceta?
You know, knowing your limits? If you know you don't have the know-hows to do animation, then avoid doing it?
And don't come at me with that shit dude, even not knowing Japanese you can't tell how fucking face-palm inducing that type of development is
For anybody wondering about Sen, all I can say is
trust no one not even yourself
>people are going to surprised at his death
It shocked me.
Yes, we've already established that your opinion is worth less than garbage if all you can complain about is graphics in a Falcom game.
It's not even like there isn't plenty of other low-hanging fruit, you fucking moron.
>I hope it sells well and they bring over ALL the games
Now we see the reason one would defend a game he hasn't played so fiercely.
In the end, you don't care about someone buying a game he won't enjoy as long as you get the games you want huh?
It's a JRPG, OP. Other than manga, it's the closest a weeb will get to reading an actual book. Weebs have no idea what a good story is, they enjoy recycled characters, plots, settings and stories. All that needs to change are the outfits and hairstyles.
You know, this strategy of "buy this to get that game you want" is so terrifying...
In the end, people are just this selfish that they would lie to obtain something they want.
I think they call it..."Stockholm Syndrome"
>weebs gonna weeb
wouldn't they buy both?
No, because Trails in the Sky isn't actually a weeb game. Nepshit is the definition of a weeb game. Trails is actually a damn good game that normal people can enjoy, too.
I would know - I hate anime and weeb shit, but the TiTS games are my new favorite games ever.
>Trails in the Sky isn't actually a weeb game
But it is very anime, it has so many tropes of the genre.
