Except the AE86 actually had good points going for it. It's a small, lightweight, cheap (when it came out) platform with good weight distribution, FR layout, and a naturally aspirated Toyota 4-banger that will run forever and is happy revving up and down all day. It wouldn't have been such a popular platform for everything from circuit racing to rallying to drifting if it was a bad car.

Is it fast? Fuck no! Is it pretty? Matter of opinion. But it's still better than John Delorean's car of the future past.

No seriously it's frustrating as fuck to be half a lap ahead only to see some fucking AI speed up to 200 mph and zoom past me only to slow down just enough so I am right on his bumper. This game would be fucking 10/10 if not for the shit ass AI.

Depends on the car. Tsuchiya used it in circuit racing as well, where the strength was being able to stay in the car's powerband instead of losing power when you slowed down for a corner. It's a reasonably useful technique for cars without much torque and with big power bands, but in general on solid tarmac drifting will still be slower every time.

Of course, introduce gravel or snow or mud into the mix and drifting/weight transfer is the only way to get around a corner with ANY sort of speed.
