I don't mind the fact it tied-into CC, but it doesn't change the fact that CC was half-assed in the character department due to the fact there's like 20-something characters, meaning that fucking MAGUS, someone who should be pretty goddamn important, gets the shaft development-wise as Guile, and you'd never know they were the same person, once again showing that Janus is the victim of time constraints conspiring against him. For CT's references to work in it's favor, CC would need to be remade with it in mind, instead of the fact that CC was never 100% a CT sequel from the start

I started replaying it recently, actually.
I deleted my save because there were embarrassing names on everyone. I'm starting from the beginning so it's not like it matters. It would've been boring if I kept all that loot.

The added content wasn't anything interesting, just an added dungeon with some overpowered items. That last sword was practically all critical hits... I just pumped Crono's speed and had him wear that counter bracer and everything would be obliterated. Lightning magic was useless compared to all those crits.

Im playing it right now.

What I dont get is how on earth people read text on the DS and previous handhelds. Its so fucking hard to read the text.

Overall, the Dimensional Vortex dungeons are good, the mountain is fucking trash. The extra weapons are nice bonuses if you've played the game a million times like I have and want new stuff to build with. The sound quality has DS twangs but it's good anyway. The tie-in stuff to Chrono Cross ranges from "OK" to insulting (really just the one thing is insulting. Really? Dalton?). The Monster-battling minigame is pretty fun too, and can get you strong gear really early.

The second screen stuff is nice in terms of layout and managing battle. I like keeping all battle stuff there while it plays out on the top screen.

It's way better than the mobile port which is fucking garbage.

The new Superboss is fun. It's easy to cheese him out with Robo though, who's new weapon is basically just Ayla's Bronze Fist (a Crit is ALWAYS 9999) and they have a bunch of new accessories that massively boost your Crit Rate.

Pretty faithful to the original game. Even added a good system to keep track of al lthe endings and side quests as you unlock them. But the added end game content is terrible.

In all, its the 'definitive' version of the game. But the SNES version is still just as good.

And holy hell, I worry what kind of accent/dialect junk they would throw into a third Chrono game.

Doesn't ruin anything and Dream Devourer is cool as fuck. They even had the sense to use World Revolution for its battle theme, which is leagues better than the standard final boss theme. So all in all pretty good.

In the DS version, he speaks in a very formal manner. Not quite Elizabethan 'ye olde' English. But still different from everyone else. Which is actually more accurate to the original Japanese where he speaks a very formal type of Japanese.

So on one hand, its more accurate to the Japanese. On the other hand, people got really use to Frog's old dialect. This is why translators need to be very careful with all versions of a game.

When you consider how Toriyama and Horii are probably locked into exclusive Squeenix-only contracts for DQ, it's probably for the best that no one else touches the Chrono IP. CT "worked" compared to the games that followed because it had that very specific group of people working on it, although out of everyone involved, Toriyama contributing to the world design is arguably why it stands-out so much to this day

I still need to play the Japanese version of the game. I've been meaning to for two years.

The translator did indeed say that he was trying not to piss people off too much, yet he changed bit things like Frog's speech, changed item/tech names, etc, to be more accurate, yet he left Black Omen alone when it's called Black Dream in Japan. This decision has puzzled me since the DS version came out.

The last main series DQ game was actually a joint venture between the Square side and Armor Project. So clearly the Square side is not above working with Horii and Toriyama. And Masato Kato still works at Square as well, meaning he could write/direct a third Chrono game quite easily. He already was working on one, but it got cancelled.

Someone above all those people is not allowing a new Chrono game to be made. Probably the same guy who is blocking Dragon Quest from being localized. But neither decision makes financial sense. Hell, a DS port of Chrono Trigger outsold a brand new, main line Star Ocean game on PS2. And they still acted like Chrono Trigger DS was a failure. But greenlit more Star Ocean games? Nothing this company does makes sense.

Translation is better, though I'm more fond of the Snes translation myself. The added content was hot garbage however. None of it was kept in theme with how the rest of the game plays and theres a ridiculous amount of reused content for the dungeons. That and the odd decision to force CC to tie the games more directly together as well.

I read somewhere it was a different Magus- a Magus from an alternate timeline, which would explain why you still have Magus with you after the event. Otherwise it would have to be a time traveling Magus from the near future.
