Jon worked way better as the comic relief, Arin's cynical asshole nature doesn't really translate to "the fool" very well, he doesn't understand the timing or when to stop things. That's why he's a one trick pony in regards to any spoof or advert they do where he uses the same two voices.

To elaborate, Jon would make annoying voices or characters too, but it was at a much more rapid pace. If I recall correctly he never attempted to do a silly voice for an entire episode.

I hate to be one of those "man everything was better back then" days, but Grumps does feel a lot less funny than it used to be. I even like Danny all things considered, he just does not pair all to well with Arin.

Contrary to popular belief I don't think a hypothetical Jon + Dan play-through would work either, I think that's just people placing their misguided hate in Arin. Dan just doesn't have the video game know how for either of them and that's kind of how Jon and Arin worked. As much as I hate Arin currently, I think he definitely complemented Jon perfectly, it's a shame he's all about money and keeping his dumb franchise afloat, there really was something wonderful about those two being paired together.

It'd also make Steam Train more bearable IMO, it's cool seeing Dan introduced to new experiences and that's never explored on Game Grumps enough, the proposed plan for Steam Train where they'd play classic PC games and new modern stuff would work with Ross and Dan as opposed to just "lol what wacky new Indie game will we play this week!?" that it's sort of become.
