>>
If you guys hadn't canned the paid mods I was going to make a mod where you could have a dog but he will be so much more than a normal pet. He will, for instance, bark when you least expect it.

You could play the game 100 times and have an entirely different experience and I was going to set it up so the game can monitor how often you turn to your left or right while walking, running, or just spinning in place. The gamer's subconscious decision to turn one way more than the other will be reflected in the character model as one side of his body becomes much more muscular than the other.

You can construct a rocket out of fallen trees and then launch that rocket into outer space with dynamite and have outer space adventures with a laser gun that you find in space.

But NO you don't want to do anything, thanks for that.

>>
>>292603995
Quite seriously, a HUGE number of those faggots haven't even played the game. When I was in university I remember frequently hearing about how "epic" and "badass" Skyrim was from people who had played it in the area of zero to fifteen minutes in the two to three years that they had owned the game.
It blows my mind.
>>
>>292602778

>>292601985
This mod sounds like stupid bullshit. Weird and inconsistent profession names, and "real objectives" in Skyrim of all things.
>>
>>292605930
It's pretty hilarious that it's the modders that were stealing assets and shit that are moaning the loudest, while the ones that were working hard in the background barely peaked up from their code to realise this happened.

Funny thing is... I'm really not.

I learned to do pretty much all of this off reading some pretty basic tutorials for the software required and took it from there.

Which is a big part of why I hate the concept of paid modding. Who the hell would post a guide to teach new people to get into this if they new it'd mean more competition?

Also MMD is playing strangely well with Marie's clothing on my first run thru of rigging the outfit. This shit just doesn't happen it's going too well.

>>
>>292605710
Pretty much.

The true "paid mods" in the gaming world, the products that originated from mods such as TF2, CS, GM, DayZ etc - have continuing development and support by paid professionals, which justify their price as they are no longer amateur products, but professional products.

Modders are like the old school olympic athletes, which were amateurs. Being a professional athlete was considered boorish and against the spirit of competition (this was quickly followed by almost everyone, but specifically the Russians, going against the spirit of competition - the reason the "miracle on ice" is such a big deal, for example, is that the US team were amateurs whereas the russians had their "amateurs", who were "conscripts", focus 100% of their time on training and practicing hockey).

Nothing 100% done yet - For now I was making a PMD and XPS version of the model for other modders to do that themselves.

I will be working on a Skyrim version - But that is a whole other project and has quite a ways to go still. It'll be on the lab once it's done for the Skyrim version as it will include a custom body and I'd rather avoid the nexus shit storm for now.

Once I'm satisfied -IE all the issues are fixed- I'll release all the files. If it's easy to do, I'll even take some requests for games to mod her into.

>>292607308
It's not about wanting others' work for free, anon.

It's about keeping the _hobby_ free and open for everyone, without having it ruled by profit interests and "support my patreon for the next update". Modding is a hobby. It is not a job. It is something you do because you enjoy it, not because you want to become rich. It is not a primary profession.

Some mods become so succesful that they can then be developed into commercial products. This is rare, especially outside of Half-Life mods, and the only Skyrim mod that really comes close is SkyUI, which probably should have been adapted by Bethesda in the first place.

Having paid mods is just opening up a can of worms that no-one wants. What happens if someone makes a competing mod? Do you DMCA them for "copyright infringement"?

Also none of the mods that included "skipping the intro sequence" worked for me, so I wouldn't want to pay for it only to have it crash all the time either.

Did he forget the point of mods, from a modder perspective? Its free because they're basically practice for real shit, they don't have to provide support, or even be responsible for if their shit works, and they're supposed to be for fun and sharing, not profit.

It seems to me that game companies realized if they allowed modders to charge for shit made with their tools, they could take a cut of that and increase revenue

Donating isn't really a likely solution. Most people won't take the time to endorse the mods they like let alone donate to them.

I don't agree with the paid modding as I've said plenty of times. I can just tell you from personal experience as I used to have a site with a donate box for my model conversion etc...

50k+ downloads, zero donations. No big deal but from that stand point I can tell you, people are too lazy for that shit.

Don't put every mod in the same basket, there are some great mods that made with more care than the devs ever would.
I don't mind people asking money for their work, I won't buy them but the thing is, I just don't want beth/valve to get any cent out of that.

We paid for the full game which included the SDK, mods were made, patches broke them many times, but people kept modding and it probably helped sell a shitload of copies. Valave and Beth already got their cut out of the modding community.

>>

That could work - But I think a big problem is for some users will be the number of mods some of us use in our games.

The games are expensive enough if you're buying them right at launch. I don't think it'll do any good for the gaming industry as a whole to allow this.

Modding is a lot bigger than just Skyrim, I'd hate to see these trends fall into places that I create content for.

My biggest is issue is mod compatibility at the moment of purchase and over time, what if an update breaks it and it's never fixed? What if it conflicts with another paid mod, now I have to choose between one or mods that I paid for. What about quality over time if the author gets complacent or lazy? The QA would have been a nightmare.

They would have been paid out in cash. The deal was they get a 25% cut of profits if their sales were to exceed $400 USD per month.

The major flaw here is that the vast number of modders who sold content would never exceed that $400 thresh hold at all - Let alone do it on a monthly basis.

Probability would have Valve/Beth taking 100% of the profits from most modders all the time, the exceptional few would make a buck for a couple of months while their projects were fresh.

I understand the community backlash, I expected it. I'm not sure how anyone DIDN'T expect it especially the modders themselves.

They are clearly out of touch with their peers if they couldn't see the result being what it was.
>>
I never really had a problem with the idea of paid mods, but Valve implemented it clumsily. There was virtually no warning, just one day, poof, now there are mods you have to pay for, and frankly none of them looked significantly better than a free mod. I wondered, "What exactly am I paying for? I'm all for supporting mod developers with donations, but now that it's a product, how am I supposed to value it compared to all the other free mods?"

I mean Valve said it themselves: Skyrim already had a very large, very successful modding community, where some devs were already being supported by donations. Throwing paid mods into the mix didn't feel like another way to support mod developers, it felt like it was making people pay for something that was free everywhere else.

I suppose for better or for worse, the consumer has never forgiven the first man who filled up a bottle of tap water and sold it for a dollar and fifty cents.

>>292610579
I think from the point of the modder, or in anyone in the position to up and be able to make money all of a sudden, I don't think they ever stopped and thought about it from the view of the community. They just saw money, especially those that were filling the workshop with crap to try and make something. I won't blame them for something happens in other industries as well. The modders that suddenly thought they were going to get away with charging for free mods were completely crazy. They were the ones that shot them in the foot. I think there's a way this system could work, with some sort of approval system before they would be able to sell a mod. I guess a greenlight for mods, but it's all complete shit anyways.

Ever notice how fat, entitled people with a low level of intelligence always think they are being scathing as fuck by calling people "kids", more than likely owing to they themselves being called manchildren on more than a few occasions and feeling hurt by the connotations that they are not acting their age?

Feels like it immediately invalidates ANY complaint, personal attack or rebuttal because it's clear it's being used as an insult only because it's something which the author personally considered offensive, and they wouldn't find it offensive unless they had issues with being called a child because it hits too close to home.

Funny thing is for those that were aware and part of this prior to launch... Many people turned down the invitation and advised others to as well.

I would like to think that most of us -knew- trying to sell our mods which are often incomplete, rough works that arn't exactly perfect products... It's a silly idea.

There is an avenue where people who want to do this kind of thing CAN make money doing exactly what they are now.

Unity is one of the most commonly used game engines for up-and-coming devs / experienced modders.

You can sell your assets - YOUR ORIGINAL own work to other people for them to use in their projects/games. For the people who want to make money off this kind of thing... There are places to do it.

Places that make sense. Places that don't jack up the cost for consumers to have an enjoyable game experience and where modders original works might actually make it in as part of a real game.

For those who bought skyrim + DLCs new they paid about $100 for a single game. Isn't that enough?

I just don't feel 'paid mods' should ever be a thing on the consumer side of the show.

This isn't just about a handful of us modders - Nor is it about people not wanting to pay for something theyve had for free...

It's going to cripple the modding community if it's allowed and in general will start a dangerous trend in the gaming industry.

We allowed DLC to become a thing - Let's not make the same mistake twice.

Modders have always been terrible. Some games just make it worse. For example the TF2 scene was terrible, you can practically trip over drama just by trying to release shit.

I've made a map before that somehow pissed off a guy, which in turn pissed off his whole clique, someone in his clique was so offended that he made this huge spiel how he'll never mod again and it is my fault, which lead to his fans to shit on my map. I wasn't big, never was, regularly got like 1-8 downloads. Except for that one map that somehow got 80+(which is insane) downloads after the whole fiasco.
Til this day I still have no idea what pissed everyone off so much, while I was thankful for literally multiplying by fanbase, I had no backbone cause I was a pussy so I stopped doing anything for TF2.

tl;dr people are entitled cunts.

Do you have a source? I'm inclined to believe your statement since they launched the Workshop store with some rather unimpressive stuff, and I had been wondering if Valve and Bethesda wanted to have more big names but they refused to join. Basically.
>>
99% of mods are unoptimized pieces of shit dripping with bugs, leftover scripting and something that CAN and WILL break a random quest 20 hours into the game, and you will never get a modder to admit it or fix it unless they find the problem first. Most of the time, they don't care to do anything about their lack of cleaning and general instability of their work.

Which is fine, because it's free.
Once it's not free, it's not okay.

But they still wouldn't do shit to fix it because they have NO OBLIGATION to do so. All they'd do is slap a price tag on their mod and leave it to stew, problems and all. If you'd demand they fix it because you spent something like $5 or more on it, they'd just shrug and say fuck you because zero liability, zero quality control and zero interest from valve in maintaining any semblance of customer happiness.

That is why paid mods cannot and will not work.

I've always found that having people use whatever content I have produced for a game is more worth the effort than money.

I never modded for anyone else or with the intent to make a living out of it. I've always created content that I wanted to play, or to simply try things out. The fact that the internet came along and made sharing content with people all over the world easy, only made things even more interesting and fun.

I don't know, it wasn't even the same gametype. I made a tc inspired map based on tc_hydro because that was my favorite map even if it was a bad map and everyone hated it.

I liked the whole concept of randomly different areas. (Remember this was still pretty early in the infancy of tf2. Like I'm not sure if the medic/pyro update was out at the time.

So I tried to make a map that emulated it with different starting points. I wanted red and blue to be randomly selected from a pool which I couldn't figure out so I did it the not so efficient. (had 5 variation for red, 5 variation for blue. Then created a map for each variation {r1b1, r1b2, r1b3, r1b4, r1b5} essentially until I cycled through all 25).

It lead to a really inflated size and I'm sure no one would have wanted to load into a server with it (Leading complaint behind the map being small). However I don't think that would be rage inducing.
Can't find the map anymore because fpsbanana no longer exist and can't use my old credentials to login to gamebanana.

There is objectively nothing wrong with monetizing the work from your hobby. "It used to be free" isn't a counter-arguement.

They have every right to do so. Just say that you don't want to pay for mods, I don't either. Don't make up shitty excuses to try to justify it.

It was never "per month", you just had to make at least $100 in profit total to cash out. You could just sell $40 worth of mods and earn ten dollaridoos per month, but you wouldn't been able to get the money until 10 months.

Yeah, paid mods existed for years, and 25% was always the cut, and nobody complained about the system. It was just called the virtual hats in Mannconomy and it worked because Valve themselves curated it, made sure it worked and provided tons of support.

This entire Skyrim paid mods shit sounds like Bethesda looking to grub at Valve's money-printer, because nobody at Valve looks at and a fucking 4-year old game and think "Yup, there's money in them thar mods."
>>
>>292605823
No, it is absolutely not illegal. Bethesda gets a cut because that's the only possible way Valve could get publishers to have paid mod links on their game's store page.

>>
>>292612779
>isn't a counter-arguement.
Well it is, suddenly trying to charge money for something that you never wanted money for before is a really scummy and dickish move. But here's another great counter-argument for you:

Most mods are not of a sufficient quality to deserve money.
The few that are still would not receive the amount of creator attention it would take to make them compatible with every other mod being sold from now till forever, in order to ensure customer satisfaction, meaning you have no guarantee that your purchase would be worth the money 24 hours afterwards.
>>
>>292613086
What kind of library lets you take books for free?
>>
Shittiness of paid modes aside, the big mistake Valve and Bethesda made was that they chose to introduce the paid mods scheme with a game that has been around for a while with a multitude of mods that have all been free up till that point.

This only serves to annoy people, as some well loved mods suddenly vanished behind paywalls for their newest versions, some of which have been developed with community help, not to mention mods that incorporate other mods. This whole thing felt like a hostage situation.

The least they should have done, is wait for TES6 and then do it, when there's still no mods in existence and everyone can be upfront whether they make a paid mod or one that stays free, so everyone can beforehand decide whether tho help out and whether there's additional royalties to be paid.
>>
>>292612779
It's not about a willingness to pay for it, it's that modding has far too many problems and lack of quality control for paying for it to be a good idea.

Injecting money into the system isn't suddenly going to give modders an amazing work ethic and magical bug checking skills
>>
>>292612779
Steam is a terrible way to monetize from your hobby. They take such a large cut and the payout goal is too large($400) for 95% of modders to ever even get paid.

>>292612225
>>292612550

people DO monetize from their mods. Either from donation or full-scale projects. The guy who made the DoA porno with Kasumi has an active patreon for example, or any of the bigger mods for STALKER/Doom has a donation button and do get donations. (course for stuff like STALKER, it is a donation button so they step on the developer's toes and get shut down) but it works.

Also no normal people play TF2. It's it's own little containment zone that really doesn't/shouldn't affect other games or the way they sell/release DLC, expansions or additional content.

The Luck Mod

Luck modifies the game in many mysterious, enigmatic ways. Sometimes something will turn out slightly different due to the influence of Luck.

Just like that player attribute, the Luck Mod influences the game in small ways which are hard to discern.

But trust me, the Luck Mod is active and at work. If you don't notice it then it's because I've succeeded at doing what this mod set out to accomplish.

Quality control would STILL be impossible (mostly because valve doesn't care, and neither do modders who just want that green). Only a handful of retards would actually buy mods, everyone else would pirate them because no matter how much people argue against it, most mods are just NOT worthy of being sold for real money.

When I donate to a modder, it is to compensate their time and effort and to encourage them to make more mods, not a payment for the actual mod itself.

Modding is a way for people to get experience with developing games without having to pay for a worthless college degree or learning how to use an actual engine.

Some people also play a game and think of ways to make it better and actually attempt to do so.

Some view it as a way to get their stories or ideas out there for other people to view.

Some just really enjoy doing it.

It's not, it's really not I promise. The only mods that get taken down either fold to C&D letters or get caught on non-mod related infringements (such as promotional photos with game assets). I've done two semesters of copyrights and I can tell you that the entire "mods are illegal!" argument rests entirely on an incorrect reading of the derivative works section. Mods are not derivative works because they are not distributing the original work in any way shape or form, no court in the US would disagree with that either.

Some minecraft modders intentionally put code into their mods to crash the users computer or put backdoor code in to gain admin access to the server that it's run on.

Example: The guy that made the forestry mod put code into it that spawned bees that destroyed your MC world and eventually crashed your game.

Why'd he do that? Because he didn't want it being distributed in the tekkit mod pack. That's literally the only reason.

He didn't want his free mod which you can't charge for by law being distributed by somebody else other than him because he would have lost out on adfly money.
>>
Do you love your significant other ? Do you love making love ? Why aren't you monetizing your lovemaking by posting videos of yourself having sex ?

You could be making money right now out of something you love ! Why wouldn't you want to be compensated for your effort ?
>>
>>292614328
In programming, a backdoor is a security vulnerability intentionally left in by the programmer so they can later gain access to systems that run it.

So, there are minecraft mods where if you run them on your server, the mod's creator can give themselves admin on your server at any time.
>>
>>292613959
It's also a really good to build a fanbase.
(Even if you're just a hack that is cloning popular paid apps)

The bullshit events that transpired in the Minecraft modding community is pretty much the shining example of why the paid steam mods were a bad idea. There's some real fucking rotten apples lurking in the modding community, and you see what happens when you lift the restrictions and they reveal their true nature for all to see.

That's why we don't do paid mods, because we don't want to give these dabbling fucks who do modding for entirely wrong reasons any legitimacy. The guy in the OP is probably just some low effort "ideas guy" that typically don't give a shit about actual modding and the community behind it. Modding is not a job, it never was one, and it never will be. Modding is the practice that could very well lead to a real job, if your work stands out and you aren't a complete fucking anti-community tool about it.

All I care about is quality control. Anyone who actually tries to make a living off mods is a god damn fool and a 25% cut isn't going to be enough to live on unless you make some top tier shit that is immensely popular.

All these paid mod shills talk about is how modders would finish these amazing projects but they're completely delusional. Look at the Nexus, how many projects worth paying for are there already? Next to fucking none and Steam attempting to steal work, take such a large cut then give back 25% is bullshit.

There was no competitive market for modding and their reactions of saying "Well I had this super secret amazing mod I won't even tease now" just tell me they aren't taking their ball and going home, they're coming to school, bragging about having the best shit ever and then saying "No my mum won't let anyone in the house" so it remains a god damn playground myth. If they want to call people children they have to realise they're the brat lying through their teeth to a bunch of kids they don't know trying to scam them out of their lunch money.

>>292615038
They're all living this pipedream where they think it'll be sustainable in any fucking way. Look at the people who support this shit, their entire argument revolves around feeding the poor, hungry modders who starve every day because Valve briefly implemented paid mods and pulled the rug out from under them. Time and time again has proven just because someone can be paid to do something does not mean they'll deliver a quality product but they keep falling for it.

You won't become the NEXT TOP GAME DEV overnight, but it is more about demonstrating personal ability. Drawing indicates art skills, but a well put-together mod can show off basic understanding of code, modeling, and various other things.

Will you get a job on it alone? No obviously not. But in an industry driven by creativity, sometimes these small little projects will go a long ways. Know what I mean?

Asking money for is probably the most entitled and lazy thing I've ever heard.

Sure some of these modders spend a shit ton of time on these mods(said modders are 10% of the total amount of modders) and they come out great. But they doesn't mean you are entitled to money just like how playing someones game on youtube doesn't entitle you to money. Sure give the option to donate and people will donate but demanding people pay money for a mod is just rude and entitled.

I wouldn't have a problem paying for mods if Valve did ANY KIND OF QUALITY ASSURANCE. Greenlight and Early Access has proven that they do not and will allow anything on Steam.

Mods are also not entirely owned by one person, since a lot of them have used assets from other people's mods. Fucking wet and cold had a DMCA filed against it.

At a 25% cut, a modder would need to shift $5,000 in mod sales per month to make the federal minimum wage.

So yeah, call it a little supplemental income, but that doesn't make modding a real career option.

Modding as is is like an unpaid internship right now, it lets you build skills and even make connections you can use in a career in video game development.

Honestly, the concept of modders being paid isn't inherently bad, but the idea that CONSUMERS should foot the bill is idiotic. Bethesda games are unplayable garbage without mods, Bethesda should be compensating modders for fixing their shit game and increasing sales on the PC platform instead of trying to milk more cash out of a several year old single player game.

I'd be okay if this 'mod market' was only for total conversions and expansion pack sized projects, but we saw that most of the initial offerings were literally 'A NEW SWORD DAT LOOKS KEWL LOL XD $2.99!'

>Modders only make 25%. Valve and the publish get 75%, with Valve getting a generous cut for doing nothing.
>Valve refuses to quality control their own platform, allowing absolute trash to be put up.
>Valve refuses to moderate their own platform, this causes many issues, including:
*People are stealing mods from the Nexus, uploading them, and charging money.
*People are charging for mods with borrowed (stolen) assets from other mods without giving money to the other mod
*People are charging for mods with copyrighted content.
*People are charging for mods that require other mods that require payment, essentially interlocking multiple mods into a "buy us all or none work" system.
*People are charging for mods that require other mods that are FREE without giving the other person money.
*People are charging for mods that require official DLC, but do not say it and there is no warning given to someone who buys it.
>Valve refuses to offer anything other than a 24 hour return policy, which is bad because:
*If a future update breaks a mod and the maker doesn't/cannot fix it, you're out money.
*If two mods do not work together, but the problem does not arise for a day or two, you're out of money.
*If there are two mods that work together, and one receives an update that breaks the other, you're out of money.
>Valve only gives you your first check after you sell $100 in mods. This means that if you make $95 you're shit out of luck.
>Valve is allowing people to put up intentionally broken mods that do not work and then charge for the patches or "updated" versions.
>Valve is allowing people to charge for bug fixes (paid patches, really?)

And the biggest problem of them all? VALVE PROFITS FROM ALL OF THIS. EVERY SHADY, ILLEGAL, CORRUPT, AND HORRIBLE PRACTICE VALVE MAKES MONEY FROM.

Modders should have gotten donation buttons. That would have been the way to support them, not take 75% and use your position as a monopoly to get your way.

How much ego-stroking and promising did beth/valve have to offer these modders who jumped on the matzo-wagon, for them to sacrifice a reputation they worked years to built? >demanding money for the shit they churned out

Modders have zero expenses, all they were seeing was money for nothing.

Nobody, least of all niggers would touch Cidney with that missing ass.

I guess that fanart actually gave her an ass.

Some of the modders who created mods that became very popular are full of themselves, much like Valve and Bethesda, they thought heir reputation alone would be enough to pull off this stunt and get away with it but the backlash was too strong.

4chan gold hasn't been sold since 2010. I'm sure with the number of bans since then, owners are probably a rare breed right now.

That's the point fool.

As a modder, i really don't care. Getting paid in Steambux is all well and good but i get donations anyway so it's no big deal. You'd have to be poor as fuck to actually be angry about this.

redstone looks complicated but its actually pretty simple once you realize that a block with a redstone torch on the side is basically a single input NOR gate

Because believe it or not, people who already have plenty are usually the ones who feel entitled to even more.

I have a mod on Nexus in the top 200.

It has been downloaded be enough people to fill a football stadium several times.

No one has donated a dime to me through my button.

But I don't mind cause the payment to me is knowing someone is enjoying it.

Perhaps I'm a faggot.

just image all those steam bux you could have had.

it must have been shit though if no one ever bothered to donate
>>
>>292624609
Same anon. My mod is a simple fix for vanilla textures and lighting. Never ever thought of asking for money from the community because the IP isn't mine and it is a MOD for which all intents and purposes have ALWAYS been free for the games until the developer picks them up and makes them official spin offs IE Counter Strike.
>>
>>292624609

+ You probably could put that on your resume if you ever decide to apply for a job in this god-awful industry.
>>
>>292624749
>just image all those steam bux you could have had.
But it has taken years for him to get all those downloads.
No one is going to download the mod again, only this time for money and on an inferior mod distribution service compared to the nexus mod manager.
>>
>>292602105
As someone who's in school for Comp Eng and is learning to make video games I don't see why the fuck these people are so fucking cheap. If you make popular mods, use it on a resume to get a Software Engineering job and have them on your portfolio and it shows that you both have the skills they want and the creativity and ability to "sell."

These people obviously don't like software enough to make it a career so they obviously either have a good enough paying job to make ends meat and are shilling hard or, most likely, they're fucking NEETs or college/Uni students with little to no money and make bullshit mods and now they're trying to scam people of more NEETbucks and now they're getting their just desserts for being cheap fucking scumbags and selling out to the Jews.

These people will never make it big in Video Games if they make stupid decisions like that, the only person you should pander to is the customer and the customer alone and you DO NOT piss them off or do something that's greedy in their eyes.
>>
>>292624609
You..
I like you..
>>

I have two mods that were downloaded 300.000 times and I'm against paid mods

I'm mildly butthurt at all the shills trying to defend my "rights" when even I are against them

Snakes crawl over jagged rocks and shit all the time. I don't think a string briefly wrapped around his head is hurting him.
