If you guys hadn't canned the paid mods I was going to make a mod where you could have a dog but he will be so much more than a normal pet. He will, for instance, bark when you least expect it.

You could play the game 100 times and have an entirely different experience and I was going to set it up so the game can monitor how often you turn to your left or right while walking, running, or just spinning in place. The gamer's subconscious decision to turn one way more than the other will be reflected in the character model as one side of his body becomes much more muscular than the other.

You can construct a rocket out of fallen trees and then launch that rocket into outer space with dynamite and have outer space adventures with a laser gun that you find in space.

Nothing 100% done yet - For now I was making a PMD and XPS version of the model for other modders to do that themselves.

I will be working on a Skyrim version - But that is a whole other project and has quite a ways to go still. It'll be on the lab once it's done for the Skyrim version as it will include a custom body and I'd rather avoid the nexus shit storm for now.

Once I'm satisfied -IE all the issues are fixed- I'll release all the files. If it's easy to do, I'll even take some requests for games to mod her into.

It's about keeping the _hobby_ free and open for everyone, without having it ruled by profit interests and "support my patreon for the next update". Modding is a hobby. It is not a job. It is something you do because you enjoy it, not because you want to become rich. It is not a primary profession.

Some mods become so succesful that they can then be developed into commercial products. This is rare, especially outside of Half-Life mods, and the only Skyrim mod that really comes close is SkyUI, which probably should have been adapted by Bethesda in the first place.

Having paid mods is just opening up a can of worms that no-one wants. What happens if someone makes a competing mod? Do you DMCA them for "copyright infringement"?

My biggest is issue is mod compatibility at the moment of purchase and over time, what if an update breaks it and it's never fixed? What if it conflicts with another paid mod, now I have to choose between one or mods that I paid for. What about quality over time if the author gets complacent or lazy? The major flaw here is that the vast number of modders who sold content would never exceed that $400 thresh hold at all - Let alone do it on a monthly basis.

Probability would have Valve/Beth taking 100% of the profits from most modders all the time, the exceptional few would make a buck for a couple of months while their projects were fresh.

I understand the community backlash, I expected it. I'm not sure how anyone DIDN'T expect it especially the modders themselves.

They are clearly out of touch with their peers if they couldn't see the result being what it was.

I never really had a problem with the idea of paid mods, but Valve implemented it clumsily. There was virtually no warning, just one day, poof, now there are mods you have to pay for, and frankly none of them looked significantly better than a free mod. I wondered, "What exactly am I paying for? I'm all for supporting mod developers with donations, but now that it's a product, how am I supposed to value it compared to all the other free mods?"

I mean Valve said it themselves: Skyrim already had a very large, very successful modding community, where some devs were already being supported by donations. Throwing paid mods into the mix didn't feel like another way to support mod developers, it felt like it was making people pay for something that was free everywhere else.

I suppose for better or for worse, the consumer has never forgiven the first man who filled up a bottle of tap water and sold it for a dollar and fifty cents.

99% of mods are unoptimized pieces of shit dripping with bugs, leftover scripting and something that CAN and WILL break a random quest 20 hours into the game, and you will never get a modder to admit it or fix it unless they find the problem first. Most of the time, they don't care to do anything about their lack of cleaning and general instability of their work.

Which is fine, because it's free.
Once it's not free, it's not okay.

But they still wouldn't do shit to fix it because they have NO OBLIGATION to do so. All they'd do is slap a price tag on their mod and leave it to stew, problems and all. I've always found that having people use whatever content I have produced for a game is more worth the effort than money.

I never modded for anyone else or with the intent to make a living out of it. I've always created content that I wanted to play, or to simply try things out. The fact that the internet came along and made sharing content with people all over the world easy, only made things even more interesting and fun.
I appreciate every single person who have ever took and interest in, downloaded and enjoyed my content.

I don't know, it wasn't even the same gametype. I made a tc inspired map based on tc_hydro because that was my favorite map even if it was a bad map and everyone hated it.

I liked the whole concept of randomly different areas. (Remember this was still pretty early in the infancy of tf2. Like I'm not sure if the medic/pyro update was out at the time.

So I tried to make a map that emulated it with different starting points. I wanted red and blue to be randomly selected from a pool which I couldn't figure out so I did it the not so efficient. (had 5 variation for red, 5 variation for blue. Then created a map for each variation {r1b1, r1b2, r1b3, r1b4, r1b5} essentially until I cycled through all 25).

It lead to a really inflated size and I'm sure no one would have wanted to load into a server with it (Leading complaint behind the map being small). However I don't think that would be rage inducing.
Can't find the map anymore because fpsbanana no longer exist and can't use my old credentials to login to gamebanana.

Some minecraft modders intentionally put code into their mods to crash the users computer or put backdoor code in to gain admin access to the server that it's run on.

Example: The guy that made the forestry mod put code into it that spawned bees that destroyed your MC world and eventually crashed your game.

Modding is probably the best way to get game dev experience if you really think about it. If you throw up something at a professional grade, you'll find work.

The bullshit events that transpired in the Minecraft modding community is pretty much the shining example of why the paid steam mods were a bad idea. There's some real fucking rotten apples lurking in the modding community, and you see what happens when you lift the restrictions and they reveal their true nature for all to see.

That's why we don't do paid mods, because we don't want to give these dabbling fucks who do modding for entirely wrong reasons any legitimacy. The guy in the OP is probably just some low effort "ideas guy" that typically don't give a shit about actual modding and the community behind it. Modding is not a job, it never was one, and it never will be. Modding is the practice that could very well lead to a real job, if your work stands out and you aren't a complete fucking anti-community tool about it.

All I care about is quality control. Anyone who actually tries to make a living off mods is a god damn fool and a 25% cut isn't going to be enough to live on unless you make some top tier shit that is immensely popular.

All these paid mod shills talk about is how modders would finish these amazing projects but they're completely delusional. Look at the Nexus, how many projects worth paying for are there already? Next to fucking none and Steam attempting to steal work, take such a large cut then give back 25% is bullshit.

There was no competitive market for modding and their reactions of saying "Well I had this super secret amazing mod I won't even tease now" just tell me they aren't taking their ball and going home, they're coming to school, bragging about having the best shit ever and then saying "No my mum won't let anyone in the house" so it remains a god damn playground myth. If they want to call people children they have to realise they're the brat lying through their teeth to a bunch of kids they don't know trying to scam them out of their lunch money.

I'm still in my final year or two of engineering so I'm not quite at that point, but small personal projects done well can speak loudly to a personal ability.

You won't become the NEXT TOP GAME DEV overnight, but it is more about demonstrating personal ability. Drawing indicates art skills, but a well put-together mod can show off basic understanding of code, modeling, and various other things.

Will you get a job on it alone? No obviously not. But in an industry driven by creativity, sometimes these small little projects will go a long ways. Know what I mean?

A lot of modders didn't just do it because of love for the game, it's practice in 3d modeling, coding, and other skills that could be marketable in the future.

Paid mods are perfectly viable, but Steam Workshop was such an obvious cash grab that it's embarrassing.
