With sites like Logical Increments to help people pick sensible parts, it's been easier than ever to do this. There are more online distributors like GMG and GOG. I don't get why some people still have a problem with Steam Machines. I think they're fine for what they are, majority will still build a PC, but some there still is a market for pre builts even though they can be a tad overpriced.

Valve created SteamOS and Steam Machines in order to not be so dependent on Windows and DirectX. They see it as backup plan just in case Microsoft does something crazy with Windows or DirectX. So far things are fine, but you never know what could happen down the line. So, they decided to start now to at least get the ball rolling and get some games ported to Linus/SteamOS.

None of that matters though, Valve has all but transcended regular game releases at this point. I doubt they'll ever fully stop making games, but they're 100% right to focus on their infrastructure for the time being.

The results have been one of the best uses of DRM in a way that doesn't feel violating all while creating an entire community and economy around it.

Even if they haven't made a game lately, they've still facilitated the growth and accessibility of PC gaming overall, which has a larger impact on the gaming climate than any one game could ever do.
