RTS thread motherfuckers

Which games has the comfiest base building?
Turtle singleplayer skirmishes with a hot cup of coffee/tea and your favorite podcast in the background are as cozy as winter vidya gets.

there is a reason why mobas killed your shitty genre: it's shit.

Cossacks, it's so comfy you don't even care about enemy, you just want your base to grow big and wealthy.

And then the AI sends some fuck to run around and capture all your buildings.

Is there a game that does "hold the line" concept as well as COH? I just want to maintain my MG nests and do some comfy mortar shelling while slowly advancing.

Especially because there's basebuilding mode without enemies. Thanks for reminding me anon, I think I'm gonna play a round today.

Too bad MOW runs like shit 15 minutes into any game mode. Also the lack of skirmish mode ruins it for me. Thanks for the effort though.

Guess what, SupCom2 tried to do the same. Same with End of Nations. All failed.
To appeal/lure more people into the RTS world, you have to make it more casual and easier. There is a reason DoW2 and lots of other RTS/RTT only attract a certain group of hardcore people. They don't bring in allot of money, but they do last. Unlike SC2 which lured lots of people but is pretty much dead now.
>>
>>275638657
>huge step forwards in terms of scale

How was it? Having several spheroid pain in the ass maps isn't anything better than one enormous 'flat' map akin to SupCom. Even then, scale isn't the deciding factor in a good RTS.

I wanted to love this game but they fucked it up by giving it unit caps.

Also I remember one mission, where you had to use the alien invaders troops to kill that traitor with the claws - you started in the bottom left and they had a base in the middle. Thing was, the hero unit you had could recycle stuff to charge up his super cannon which could shoot fireballs anywhere on the map, so you could just artillery out the bad guy and auto win, without attacking the base.

nigger you what

Carryalls were standard units in Tiberian Sun. And also the only way to get the Mammoth MK2 anywhere on the map without it taking a fucking age, you just had to watch out for anti-air.

I think you needed to build a repair center for carryalls to be available. But they were definitely in the vanilla game.

Of course playing on multiple PLANETS with their own moons and sun is better than playing on some patch of land, the map size is or will be supposed to scale with processing power so you can hypothetically play on a earth-sized planet.
>Even then, scale isn't the deciding factor in a good RTS.
Of course scale isn't THE factor, but it's an important factor. Improvements of either scale or detail is vitally important, and since improved detail usually lands you in some sort of tactics game scale would be the way to go with RTS games. Like, there's a reason why the AoE 2 remake lets you have like 1000 population, cause bigger scale is more impressive, on top of being more complex. Aesthetics and mechanics pushed to new heights. A game like starcraft 2 where your game-ending army is some sort of amorphous blob covering maybe 1/4 of the screen when packed together is lame compared to several 500 meter tall robots surrounded by a mass of thousands of smaller bots.

What RTS game has a nice city building aspect like Age of Mythology? I don't want a pure city building game though
>>
A long ass while ago I played the demo of a RTS set in feudal Japan. It had no fantasy elements. Units looked small next to the buildings, nice proportions. Gameplay was similar to Age of Empires. Horses were stand alone units, you had to select a human unit and mount it. Resources included timber and rice.

I obviously don't remember the name, because it's a good game I played during my childhood and the gods makes us forget those things just so we can become frustrated adults.

If anyone could tell me the name of that RTS, I'd be forever grateful.

Give me some more comfy immersive city building game /v/(with decent combat as a bonus)

Settle is kinda boring
I played Ceasar III and IV... pretty good building game but combat still mediocre
Fucking love Rise of middle kingdom, its 2D art is top notch and gameplay is very good but suffer the same problem with combat
black and white 2 is meh
Dungeon keeper 2 has good gameplay but got boring pretty quick. Also combat is stupid, almost every unit is auto control, just drop fuckers over enemy troops then watch
Children of the nile is underrated. I understand the hate since it's nothing like pharaoh but they nailed the Egypt society and actually let you act like a Pharaoh, immersive as fuck.

They should make a new RTS where you have teammates in which some gather the resources and handle the base building aspects and tech while the other handles the combat. Would be fun as fuck planning for optimum output. Would be fun going through campaign like that with a bro.

I used to want something like computer AI in Starcraft to be controlled by someone that handled resource gathering while I went and wrecked shit based on the units provided me by my teammate. For me its story.
First of all, yeah, yeah, ruskies were bad Mckay.
Seriously, its obvious propaganda, you would have to be a retard or murican to actually believe this shit.

During the game you play as a despicable human bean.
Even nazies didnt receive such shitty treatment in movies or games, ever.
Usually nazies were either chaotic evil or lawful evil.
Ruskies in CoH2 are not even on lawful-chaotic/good-evil chart.
They are more on a repulsive/disgusting/fucking monsters and everything that is bad with humanity, kind of chart.
Shitty russian accent breaks the mood for me as well.
Constant highlighting that ruskies hates their own kind, when sending soldiers straight at MG you can hear orders, go comrades, they cant kill all of us, or something in this vein.

I am not particularly interested in historical aspect so I could swallow some discrepancies.
I could do this if ruskies were shown nazie kind of evil, cold and soulless murder machine, too bad they are really despicable in CoH2.

While I can get behind historic aspect of the game, I have no desire to play as scum of humanity, I just feel repulsed, I much more prefer heroic aspect of both armies first CoH had.

Mobas are a subgenre of RTS. The major difference is between the players of mobas and old school RTS.

For mobas people don't have a problem with competition, being attentive, strategizing and coordinating with team members.

The "true" RTS players seem to be playing RTS like city building sims like they need a single player safe space because they have difficulties socializing, dealing with pressure, and staying focused

SC2 has a lot more wrong with it than the build order meta.
>forced low unit diversity at start
>removal of hard counters in terms of armor and attack types
>broken targeting ai example
>workers have same priority for targeting as actual units
>just watch a video or play some broodwar yourself, and you'll see how gross the change to targeting ai is.
>removal of almost all micro related skills and units
>heavy emphasis on macro with the high unit cap and easy controls
>for instance, all production buildings can be grouped which allows
>no management of your macro game in terms of unit queues and resource management in order to keep constant production
>the lack of unit select cap encourages you to simply A+click to win
>instead of being FORCED to micro even in the simplest of terms to win
There's a lot more than just this, but it's enough to show some of the core problems.

There's this one Ukranian mission where you start with a squad of riflemen, and as you spawn there's already a group of Turkish pikemen marching toward you, you can walk backwards for a little bit to find some more riflemen for your cause, but really how are you supposed to know that.

That game was terrible. It was challenging to NOT win accidentally through a culture victory or whatever. Some of the challenges were just stupid and not worth trying to complete. The god powers made you beyond unstoppable - and don't even get me started on the way your opponent's giant animals kept coming back to life with more and more health. Nothing could beat them except your god hand bashing them with a giant rock over and over.

The enemy monsters were so tough that they invalidated any cause to build a wall. Yeah, they kept out small skirmishing parties, but so does a giant fireball simply dropped on top of them.

Also, army management was damned terrible. Lost some men in your platoon of 100? Well now you've got to look for men. Specifically men to replace those guys, and DON'T drop women down there or they'll become breeders - and women breeders were useless because they spend all their time being pregnant and could only produce one child at a time. Once you've got a woman breeder standing near your army, anyone else you drop near the army also becomes a breeder because, "Why the fuck not".

Don't take a big hit to your army, mind, or else you'll have to scoop up your entire town to find enough people who are male and of reasonable age to be in the military, because there was no automated function to make that happen.

Help

I can't remember the title of a game. It was a fantasy setting and you'd build up a town and send heroes out to slay wolves or monsters by placing a flag with reward gold. Heroes would go there, slay beasts, reap rewards and come back and spend gold in your town.

It was the 2nd game and I think it started with an 'S'

In fact, the only time I ever bothered with military victories was using the volcano wonder, and only because the volcano wonder was a combination of bugged and amusing. If you stacked volcano wonders on top of themselves, the ground wouldn't return to normal afterward, so you could use it to make giant, ridiculous, steep mountains that were hard to build on. After you'd scorched all that existed of another race, you took over their city with military. That's if they weren't instantly persuaded to join your side just because you built the volcano wonder in the first place.

You couldn't even refuse to let the enemy immigrate through your borders. God could not set up a proper immigration policy.

The balance on Zero Hour was really terrible. Aurora Alphas were just broken, but without them the Super Weapon general had nothing going for her. Except her EMP turrets, which were also broken given the ridiculous efficiency of Aurora Alphas. They ensured nothing small would get in, big groups would be horribly bombed, and key targets would also be bombed. Pathfinders kept out terrorists or guys trying to plant bombs.

It was such a wonkily designed game. In a team game, the Super Weapon general would win everything single-handedly, but 1v1 the general was too weak to survive until mid game.

And then, oh god. There's stealth general. EVERYTHING IS INVISIBLE.

>>
>>275622159
By your own judgement, the only difference between MOBAs and RTS games is that MOBAs don't require good multitasking skills either.

People like to think that MOBAs require a lot of strategy and lateral thinking, but they don't. It's just an hour long competition between which of two faggots can accumulate enough gold to win the game and take all the credit whilst eight people just roam around the map, attack eachother and complain loudly on teamspeak.
>>

I don't know if you're still here, but in legacy of the void they're actually implementing something like what you're talking about into matchmaking. you it's a 2v2 but plays like a 1v1 with you and a partner sharing a base, units, and resources. You're basically playing the CAWADOOTY of the RTS world. It's the most popular, most bland, most recycled RTS on the market right now. you can't have strategy without base building. it's how you have factors like logistics even when the game takes place on a limitied battlefield. without base building you lose out on the aspect of balancing economy and technology vs army.

>micro
as long as humans are better at video games than ai, an army that's being carefully controlled will always perform better than one that isn't. the only way to eliminate micro is either making it impossible to directly control your army, or by making everything so slow even an 80 year old wouldn't feel rushed for time.

Overshadowed by MOBAs by big developers.
Rts's are too complex/costly for indie devs. Much easier to make an adventure or point and click game. Rts's are a ton of math, gameplay balancing, animations, etc.

Basically money is the reason
>>
>>275661583
>I love SC2 because I know that, whenever I lose, I could have played better.

That's true of every RTS, though. In fact, SC2 tends to punish more for not following play books because you need to sacrifice units in the early game within specific timing windows if you want to predict some kinds of cheese. It's not a minor thing, either, where two casuals players get by fine if one cheeses and the other doesn't catch it - cheese takes a casual player to the upper leagues before they get stomped by players who can scout that nonsense in the right window.

Where it comes to fun, that's very frustrating. Some games come down to denying the sacrificial scout, and you want to know what's really frustrating about the sacrificial scout? It's always something not well suited to scouting, like a worker, a slow overlord, or a cliff-jumping unit. In the mid to late game, the Protoss gets an invisible scout that is shot down by turrets before it can penetrate the base.

But then you look at games like Supreme Commander and they give you both ground and air scouts specifically for the job at both early and late game. Late game scouts are just faster and sometimes more stealthy. As in, they give you units designed to do this things you HAVE to do, and they're cheap because you will likely lose them in the process of scouting. Having them makes it easier to keep eyes on the map.

SC2 forces players into ruts and doesn't really provide many options, I think. The units are over-specialized to counter one or two specific enemy units. They aren't built to take on important roles like siege, scouting, or anti-armor most of the time. It's "x does this job" in SC2, it's "x beats y, so you have to build x if your opponent builds y, but y won't actually be able to get into your base so you can also wait until you have a deathball if you want".

I remember some old as fuck sci-fi game where you essentially had a city-builder, but every so often enemy spaceships flew over and blew you up if they got through your defenses. Eventually you built your own fleet and sent them to the enemy city.

the "enemy city" was literally off-map, so enemy ships would appear at the map edge, and your own ships would fly off the map to attack their city "somewhere else"

I just like being comfy as fuck building a town, and then manning outposts, etc rather than losing troops

>>275663224
I mean to say, it isn't "x does this job". Units in SC2 have no function. They're made specifically to kill something else. Like Tempests are to specifically kill Brood Lords and that's all that Tempests do. They aren't really meant to be long range bombardment or siege units because, outside of Brood Lords, they do no damage considering their ridiculous investment.

SC2 units have no jobs. They lack roles. If you build 200 hydralisks and your opponent builds one colossus, then all 200 hydralisks are beaten because the colossus has a longer range, does extra damage to the hydralisk, can climb cliffs, and is faster. It's mean to kill hydralisks, so that's what it does to a ridiculously one-sided extent. Then all it takes is one corruptor and the colossus is helpless, again for the same reason. One corrupter beats two hundred colossi, one colossi beats two hundred hydralisks, one hydralisk beats two hundred corruptors. Rock paper scissors.

Yes, the player gets an animal too, but the enemy animal doesn't have a hard cap on its health and strength like the player's animal does, so the player's animal can only win the first two or three fights. >RTS was still very healthy in 2007
It wasn't. In comparison to previous years RTS releases severely dropped. Companies tried to casualize the series by removing base buildings, turning it to real time tactics, and then it died completely. It wasn't MOBAS that killed RTS, they just gained popularity after but correlation does not imply causation.

RTS was dying years before because the market grew considerably but RTS' piece of the pie didn't increase. The casual player entered en masse and wasn't interested. Companies could either make more popular games from other genres, or remake RTS, but it didn't work and in turn they pissed off their original player base as well, killing it completely.

Yeah, I know, I just don't have that much time to devote to a game anymore. If I could just go NEET for a couple years, I'm sure I could make a living off of it. As it is now, I'm just above average in everything I play.

hmm i dunno maybe you're duluding yourself? because at a certain stregth etc my animal was beat the shit out of him. alway. enemie's health was also the ssame ~ took about the same time every fight.

>PRO TIP:
play black and white 2 on dope. maximum comfy i've ever had plus everytrhing will make more sense. molyneux may fuck up a few promises but on dope you clearly see/live his thoughts on each corner.

Well you must have been playing on dope. The enemy animal is programmed to gain health and strength every time it dies. If you play long enough, it becomes impossible to beat using your own animal.

It's cool how the Arm commander has those lines of rust that suggest veins, as the commander from the more organic faction. And that vent in the chest, is that to let in oxygen? It's cool.
