I'll start with the obvious: Chaotic Evil
>>
Lawful Evil for Ornstein?
>>
>>275062785
>>275063157
Those two would both be lawful evil you mongoloids
>>
>>275064327
Personally I think you need to be chaotic evil to eat people, a lawful evil wouldn't be a cannibal. IMO the 9 alignments don't even cover it, you need at minimum another layer.

Smough would be chaotic lawful evil
>>
>>275064327
How is Smough Lawful Evil? he's basically described as a horrible abomination by everyone/everything that mentions him. Even Frampt considers eating his soul worth just 1 soul.
>>
>>275064687
I think because someone somehow convinced him to guard the door. I mean, if he was truly Chaotic Evil no one would be able to tell him what to do, he wouldn't see the purpose in obeying a command and fuck off to do what he wanted

Neutral Good masterrace coming thru
>>
>>275064847
This is easy. Neutral evil.
>>
>>275064327
why they even "evil" tho?
Ornstein was protecting the royalty, that was kinda the shit he was appointed to and he did his best doing it
If anything he would be Lawful Good
>>
>>275064847
That makes sense I guess, but I feel like Smough could teeter on the line between both Lawful and Neutral since he's so brutal and just barely obeying those commands. His motivation for guarding also seems to be the fact that he gets to stay Executioner, so it is self-serving.
>>
>Smough is the royal executioner of Anor Londo. He longs to be ranked with the Four Knights, but his cruelty, including using his victim's bone as his food's seasoning, forever denied the position.
>>

Lawful neutral?
>>
>>275064986
Again, why would you then take such great pleasure in killing people that you put their bone meal in your food? It means you take some kind of catharsis out of killing or in the knowledge of the dead of your enemies, that's not neutral. Neutral Evil is usually for lazy people who'd rather not pick an alignment, but if you force them to, they'll go with evil just because it's easier or something.

I'm no expert on alignments. It'd help if we knew how he was persuaded to guard the door.
>>
>>275064687

Lawful or neutral evil makes sense.
>>
>>275065252

In the end even Solaire becomes disillusioned and focuses on his suffering and bleakness. Though you can still summon him to fight Gwyn.

Artorias chaotic good (willing to make deals with demonic monstruosities for the greater good),

Gough strikes me as neutral good.

Too little Ciaran, but since she's Artorias' waifu I'd go for chaotic good too.

holy shit i said pinewheel.
now i have an image of pinwheel surrounded by christmas trees in my head.
>>
>>275068821

Pinwheel's theme at least has a unique sound to it, it's slow an spooky and evokes a voodoo feel and has whispering in the background

Fume knight is just BUM BUM BUM BUM chrous chant BUM BUM BUM chorus chant which is like three quarters of the songs in Ds2
>>
>>275068950
I think they retconned that storyline in the regular game. Everyone THOUGHT he made a contract with the snakes but in reality he just got wrecked by Manus and forcibly turned to the abyss.

Still don't know where the Covenant of Artrorias fits into the new story
>>
>>275069174

Yes, I much prefer [chanting intensifies] like in Dark Souls. There are only like, 5 good songs in each game max. Let's not kid ourselves here. Then again, this is a board that thinks that Dark Souls had a plethora of memorable characters.
>>
>>275068950

That's just the legend surrounding him in the non-DLC present day Souls world, where he made a deal to become a drakrwraith and shit. In the DLC you go back and learn that he fell victim to the abyss, he didn't voluntarily make a pact with it

deepest lore
>>
>>275068950
Yeah. He made the covenant to save Oolacile, but found himself overwhelmed by the Abyss because he had no defence against the dark because of his lack of Humanity. His last desperate action was to save is bestest friend ;_;

na dude, the reason the specifically sent artorias to oolacile was because he could walk the abyss, brought sif with him, dropped his shield to protect sif, fought manus with just his sword, and got corrupted probably from sheer pain.
>>
>>275069303

I'll agree that most are pretty similar and say that Demon's souls boss tunes were way better. But the chanting of shit like the Gaping Dragon's music or O&S music is just a lot more recognizable than the chanting tunes of DS2

O and S, yes, but not Gaping Dragon. In fact that's such a ridiculously forgettable boss fight in general. Next people will start saying Capra Demon had an amazing theme.
>>
>>275069669
>not Mananus without the Pendant
Seriously, I wondered why the fight was so hard before I discovered that thing
>>
>>275069174

Fume Knight's theme at least has a unique sound to it, it's a fiery war chant and evokes a feeling of utmost dread and power because of the gloomy chants and martial drums in the background.

Pinwheel is just "bing bong" 2spookywhisper "bing bong doo doo".

Works both ways :^)
>>
>>275069669

#1 Sir Alonne
#2 False King
#3 Fume Knight
#4 Artorias
#5 Darklurker

in that order.
>>

The beginning is great but then it's just "HAH HAH HAH HAH HAH" high pitched voices.
>>
>>275069792

I don't know how you could forget fighting something as unique as the gaping dragon

If you had played Des before Ds1 he was probably a lot easier but I played through Ds1 blind, offline, and as my first souls game and he took me a good amount of tries to beat
>>
>>275069926

I... agree?
>>
>>275069669
I'm gonna go with O&S because those guys pushed my shit in for so many hours before I finally beat them. Granted it was my first ever souls playthrough and I did it entirely offline (without learning how to summon and running a shit build)
>>
>>275069831

It really doesn't because no other souls song sounds like pinwheel's

Half of them sound like fume knight's
>>
>>275069669
Yeah. I also really liked Manus.
>>
>>275069974

I played DaS first, DeS second and DaS2 third. Gaping Dragon was never hard, in fact, the only difficult bosses with Ornstein and Smough and Gwyn because I didn't know you could parry him in my first playthrough.
>>
>>275070089

What is Flexile Sentry theme
>>
>>275069974
He has a lot of health and is annoying when he gets buffed by the Mage dude.
>>
>>275069974
Das1 was my first souls game and I beat it solo, barely any effort. I didn't even dodgeroll. Just fatly ran away when it came near and went for the legs.

But what I like about Souls is that every single person has a different experience. Some struggle with O&S for weeks, others get them on the first or second try, but then they have an issue with the Four Kings.
>>
I just noticed that pretty much no one you fight in the entire game is actually 'evil'.

Everyone has their purpose for doing things, and usually it is justified.

Demons are evil but they were born from the recreation of the first flame, which wasn't done for any evil reason.
>>
>>275070194

So you're gonna tell me that you beat gaping dragon blind and without phantoms on your first few tries? Cause I'd have to call you a liar
>>
>>275069926
For me its gotta be

#1 Artorias
#2 Manus
#3 Fume Knight

>>
>>275069926

Artorias of the Abyss DLC has the best bosses in the series, and is the GOAT DLC of any game ever.

The ring is still an essential part on beating the game, and nothing directly tell us it was all a ruse. You can't just assume it's retconed when the storyline is shaky enough as it is.

It was funny for me because i played Monster Hunter games a lot before i played any Souls game.
And Gaping, as well as most big Souls monsters are just Monster Hunter bosses turned into slow retards.
>>
>>275070348
Not that guy either and Gaping wasn't difficult for me. In fact the AI barely seemed interested in me. I got hit maybe three times, it seemed like it was too busy running into walls and chilling there. Was quite easy for me.

Before him though, I had huge issues with the Bell Gargoyles and Capra Demon. And right now I'm struggling hard with the Sanctuary Guardian, so.

See now people are telling me about how easy Gaping was for them but I beat Capra first try by fleeing towards the only thing I noticed in the room, the stairs, and quickly killing the dogs without much issue. From there I think I ate like one attack and just chipped him down with the battle axe no problem. Now when I fight gaping dragon he's just a tank that repeats his vagina slam and forward crawl but I'll swear when I first fought him I must've gotten unlucky or had stupid positioning cause he would swipe and puke and jump a lot more often

Yeah, my character is not great at dodging (and neither am I) and the SG just tears through tanking builds. My strategy so far is just holding up my shield right by the fog gate so I can definitely grab my remains after I die. I've mostly gotten its melee patterns down, but even with a thunderplate ring on and the shield of Artorias it's still destroying me with its thunder attacks.

Lautrec was doing it for his goddess.
Seath was pretty god damn evil.

And Manus and Nashandra were just spreading the Dark, which isn't really "evil". It's just the course of nature, and its also the "age of man", so that's not really bad.

Manus destroyed Oolacile which resulted in who knows how many deaths and Nashandra manipulated Vendrick into stealing from the giants which resulted in a war that cost hundreds/thousands of lives on either side. After seeing all the men it cost Drangleic to try and hold back the giants, men who had nothing to do with Vendrick's and Nashandra's plan and especially after meeting Captain Drummond, I can't really say Nashandra is anything but in the evil column.

The power to expunge the black fog, meaning the results of the influence of a child of dark. raime could sense it and could defeat it.
He was on to nashandra.
Vendrick, being the short sighted and selfish king he was, sent velstadt to silence raime, and their "wills clashed".
Raime, defeated and labeled a rebel, went to seek strength, where else to go but the iron kingdom, home of the strongest warrior in the world, Alonne.

thats what i think too. its too plainly obvious when you think about it.

i mean from the start, even before the DLC's, when all we had was his greatshield, you have to think, what in DS2's world would make Vendrick's Left hand man go against him?

When you look at how fucking deep vendrick had to go to stop Nashandra's machinations, you realize that he probably got redpilled hard and was labeled a traitor for going against the queen.

The whole "black fog" bit makes it more apparent. he had the power to eradicate the Dark. He could have exorcized Nadalia if he wanted to. But he gave in instead due to his newfound desire for strength after getting rekt

Probably because Solaire's world and adventure more closely mirror our own as Chosen undead. He is his world's chosen undead, but occasionally crosses over into our world due to timespace being fucked.

When he's in our world he converses with us and leaves his sign so we can summon him from his world to help.

if you don't kill the chaos bug, it posesses him while he's in our world, and so we kill him in our world.

TL;DR time fuckery- but it doesnt mean that all NPC's will be alive and well in their world if they die in ours.

Played the game one time offline for the atmosphere and armour. That knight Lautrec seems like a lover hero to me: bearer of the favour of the goddess and his armour has a hands of a goddess hugging him. Based on his words that he "has his time with the firekeeper", her own words that she "is impure" and widespread trope of adventurous knight and common girl trope i assume that it was rape through seducing. It seems pretty obvious for me that he tossed her estus. Than cut her tongue and decided to clean all evidence for sure not to lose favour of the goddess. Sorry for my bad english.

Again I have a completely opposite experience, a lot of DeS bosses have some sort of a pretty easy gimmick you have to do to beat them and the ones who don't and you're just supposed to fight straight up like the Penetrator just aren't all that hard.

"Neutral" in this sense refers to how that character feels about the balance between Order and Chaos. A Neutral Evil character will obey or disobey orders, switching between whichever option pushes their own agenda forward. They don't have any sense of loyalty or disloyalty to laws/leaders, they just do whatever will help them fulfill their own desires. Smough obeys Gwyn and his family because it allows him to engage in his murderous habits without any hassle. That's why he's Neutral Evil.
>>
>>275082268
Flamelurker is an absolute nightmare when you start out, Maneaters become more annoying later on as it's not them being tough to kill but they just keep fucking messing with you by flying around. Plus the fucking narrow walkways don't help either.

I guess it's the atmospheric sensation and the fear of falling that make the Maneaters more memoriable

>A neutral evil villain does whatever she can get away with. She is out for herself, pure and simple. She sheds no tears for those she kills, whether for profit, sport, or convenience.

Big Hat is a sorcerer who has dedicated himself to the pursuit of knowledge, with everything else being considered by him to be peripheral to that objective after he abandoned his role a teacher.

On reflection, Seath fits the alignment better but Big Hat certainly falls under it too.

Big Hat didn't take unwilling victims and torture/disfigure them for science like some kind of Nazi, which Seath did. Saying he's evil is like saying Solaire is evil for worshipping the sun and eventually attacking you if you don't do the maggot thing.

At worst Big Hat is Lawful Neutral. He's mostly just looking to satisfy his own curiosity, but he also doesn't really seem concerned with helping people around himself. He also doesn't seem too keen on breaking certain ethical standards until he's well on his way into madness. He's probably a True Neutral by the end though, his mind is so broken that he didn't seem capable of higher reasoning.

You say that like its no big deal. Anyway, if enemies can be illusory and contain souls, then why can't an item? The unique souls that we get that fight could very well be illusions themselves.

I prefer just plain fights vs a well designed opponent, the gimmics stuff was kinda surprising and jarring to me because the game is otherwise very atmospheric and subtle, then it's suddenly a Mario level. I always assumed that Anor Londo was more or less evacuated and Ornstein stuck around out of duty. Meanwhile, Smough continued to hand with him because they were best buds. I got the impression that Ornstein was good friends with Smough even if he wasn't very nice, and in return he defers to Ornstein to some extent out of gratitude because no one else will give him the time of day. Thus, Ornstein probably said 'Well, I'm sticking with you m8 but we have to guard the Princess, alright? You can put whoever we kill in your porridge, sound good big lad?" Hey guys, I've been busy with college this year so I couldn't get Dark Souls 2. Thing is, I'll be free some days from now and I was wondering if online is still alive for DaS1 on PS3. I tried playing it some weeks ago and couldn't find ANYONE, so I'd like to now if I should just go ahead and finish the game with all my PVP characters and just play them on NG+ before moving on to DaS2.

And speaking of DaS2. I'm jumping it without prior knowledge (avoiding walkthroughs and the like), but I'd like to know about the covenants beforehand. Just the name, what they do and if they work or not to see if I should bother, because I'm still disappointed at how the Gravelords worked in DaS1.

It's a duelling covenant, not an invasion one. To get the reward for it, you have to have 500 wins in duels. And those have to be ratio wins, I.e. every loss counts against you. So you'd need, say, 606 wins if you had 106 losses.

Sunbros are still around, they're more or less the same. Good for co-op.
Way of Blue is mostly just for people who don't like being invaded. It calls a Blue Sentinel to help you if you're invaded.
Blue Sentinels are like the Darkmoons, with a side of helping protect scrubs from invaders.
Bell Keepers work the same as the Forest Hunters, they get called to invade trespassers in two bell tower areas. Good for getting used to pvp combat, and you'll probably want to spend some time in it farming titanite chunks.
Rat King Servants are sort of a replacement for Gravelords, except they're also area-based. You passively force other people to invade you while in specific areas, and the enemies in those areas turn hostile to the invaders. Great covenant for attracting hatemail.
Covenant of Champions is hardmode. It makes the enemies stronger and prevents you from summoning.
Pilgrims of Dark gain access to a few unique Abyss areas. Mostly useful for getting the Xanthous armor and some good hexes.
Dragon Remnants are more or less the same as the DaS dragon covenant.
Covenant of Blood is the Darkwraith replacement. It and the Blue Sentinels both get arenas for dueling other members of the covenant, but don't see much pvp action until NG+.

All of the covenants give you something at each rank now, and you can leave covenants without penalty.
>>
>>275093961
That guy's talking out of his ass, there's the Brotherhood of Blood. The downside is that both the BoB and the new blue covenant are a real bitch to level up, because invasions are much harder to do in ng for some reason. No red invasions mean no blue counter invasions. There is an arena option to level up for both covs, but it's broken too. The blue cov requires tokens you get from helping someone defeat a world boss, but it's consumed no matter if you win or lose the arena fight. And you don't get those tokens if you're in Sunbros, so it's a bitch to max both.
>>
>>275093961
Also, while both covenants are such that you can only bother people in specific areas a little like the hunters, the rats has you drag them into your world and the monsters and traps you've prepared for them fuck them up. The downside being, since they're in your world, their deaths don't set them back much. The Bells often ends in multiple invaders kicking the shit out of some poor unfortunate so it's more fun imo.

Limiting the SL of builds meant you had to specialize, so your playstyle had to be somewhat unique to that build. SM means limiting your SL is pointless, so you may as well eat as many souls as you can.
Sure, SM mostly stops twinks, but it punishes the long time players.

I believe both of the rat invasion areas are optional, but there's some pretty good stuff in both of them, so people tend to go through them anyway. Also whoever wins in a rat invasion gets a lockstone, IIRC, which can't be farmed any other way.

>>275094335

Actually Seath is.

I'm getting kinda sick of how the Chosen Undead is 100% evil. Are we really gonna pretend that he just strolled into Lordran and started killing people at random? Everything in the game is out to get you, but I'm suddenly supposed to feel like the asshole because they just so happen to have a tragic story?

Smough was Lawful Evil at best. He might've been Chaotic Evil at one point, but Ornstein set him straight. Hell, he might've even been Lawful Good in his eyes. The things here is that the whole aspect of the player is tied into the Chosen Undead really nicely.
He does not have a story, he's just like any hollow out there, doing what he can to survive.
You are a threat to everything in that world just as much as they are a threat to you.
The Chosen Undead is forced to kill everything to go through this world.
The Chosen Undead does not have a sad, happy, tragic or good end. You either get tricked by Serpents and burn or become the Dark Lord symbolizing the end of a cycle. The end of this world, without even realizing it until the end.

Everything you, as both the Chosen Undead and the player, interact with, you only have two choices: Kill or not kill.
That's it.
There is nothing else for you in this world.
That is why the Chosen Undead is the only Pure Evil being in Lordron.
>>
>>275096459

Gwyn had a dislike and fear of the Dark. Which is in every human. So you can either say he's a hero for keeping the Age of Fire going a bit longer or a coward that feared a world where the gods aren't the top dogs anymore.
>>
>>275080868
If you watch Raime during his fights you see that he occasionally holds up his greatsword in a defensive position not unlike that of a shield. I think his right hand is actually his dominate, and by the time you meet him he no longer has his shield. My theory is that at first he trys to toy with the player because in his own mind he has become so powerful that he does not need to use the full power of his greatsword. You'll notice that once Raime gets down to half health (or if he sees you wearing Velstadts, mistaking you for the man who bested him) he gets serious and ditches his old equipment in order to go into a two handed power style with his new weapon.
>>
>>275087016
Because he couldn't have made it that far. Having found the sunlight bug, he lost all motivation to continue; he found his sun. Alternatively, you can't summon Crestfallen Warrior for Gwyn, either; he can't beat fucking Blighttown, let alone Ornstein and Smough.
>>
>>275096671
Does not having a story make you evil?
Does defending yourself make you evil?
There are a lot of NPC's and mobs you an choose to ignore or not to kill

As much as Sif was a comrade to Artorias, that is not the place Artorias died at nor is it the Knight's Honor that keep Sif there. It's the Covenant of Artorias, the ability to survive in the Abyss.
After witnessing what happened to Oolacile, Sif knows how dangerous is the Abyss, so Sift will keep anyone from trying to access it, for their own, and the land's good.

That's the one thing that makes the Age of Dark sound like a giant no no. Kaathe says that he wants the Age of Dark so he can spread the Abyss. Well judging from Oolicile and New Londo the only thing the Abyss does is either turn you into a crazy axe murder on the hunt for humanity, outright kills you, or turns you into one of the bloatheads, which is somehow worse than hollowing since you can never be human again. No sane person wants to be anywhere near the Abyss. If there's any point to the Age of Fire at all, it's keeping that shit as far away as possible.

>Chosen Undead is evil
Errors.jpg

Oscar tells you to ring the bells of awakening, so you do. Along the way you kill a bunch of hollows, some demons, a giant toothy dragon, and Quelaag if you follow the typical path.

You're not really interrupting or disrupting anything. You kill a bunch of hollows and skellingtons. Some ogres and giant bugs in blighttown. A fucking butcher who tries to turn you to food. Everything's trying to kill you. Even Quelaag tries to kill you on site, the game doesn't have dialogue for you to try and get by peacefully. You ring the bells and a giant snake with a mustache tells you what to do next. You get to restart the next age of fire. Yaaay.

So you get the lord souls from the Nito, Bed of Bullshit, Seathe, and 4 kings. Other than Nito, none of these are particularly bad kills.

And then the Chosen Undead can join different covenants. Sure a darkwraith is evil but the Princess Guard or Sunlight Covenant?

C'mon son

> that is not the place Artorias died at

Actually, if you compare the layout of Darkroot to the Royal Wood, they match up pretty closely, right down to the location of the Artorias and Sif fights.

that is flawed. you cannot be a deprived with twin humanities, for example.

Sif's location is more close to the Oolicile Sanctuary than it is to the Colosseum. Really the relationship between Darkroot and Oolicile is kind of weird, it's like how you can clearly see where the magic elevator is supposed to be but there's no sign of the Colosseum at all. And you can't say that the Abyss swallowed it since its all grassland where the Colosseum is supposed to be.

The true human nature according to Dark Souls IS crazy axe murder on the hunt for humanity. At list in its purified, concecntrated form (the abyss)

The age of fire allowed allowed for civilization and kept humans from reaching their true, shitty and evil potential, while becoming fairly civilized themselves.

The age of dark is nothing but erosion back to a fucking wasteland, with maybe a window of time for some human civilization to thrive before entropy settles in for real.

So which serpent did you go with /v/? The one that wants you to set yourself on fire and burn for a thousand years? Or the other one that wants you to be the harbinger of the apocalypse?

He killed off the Eternal Dragons because they ruled the world. It was that or stay inside a giant tree forever. He kept the humans down because humans contain the Dark. And anyone that knows what the Dark is capable of knows to stay away from it. Unless you're using it to fuel bonfires. The girl thing I'll give you. Seath didn't betray Gwyn. Seath helped Gwyn. Before he went crazy anyway. And it wasn't just change, the First Flame going out means the gods are powerless. Which considering the horrifying wave of fuckery which is the Abyss is a very bad thing.

>Established himself as god-emperor of the world keeping humans down

To be honest, it was pretty kind of him to share his prosperity with the humans instead of wiping them out as the bearers of dark, even after the New Londo incident or the start of the undead curse.

The DLC even shows that he sent his best people to save human nations.
>>
>>275105656
Humans aren't bearers of the dark.

The age of dark is called the age of man because the gods will no longer rule and the humans will
>>
>>275105656
Gwyn was already dead by the time of Artorias's adventure. You can tell because there are bonfires strewn about. But you're right in that Gwyn didn't just shit on humans all the time. He gave a Lord Soul shard to humans, even though they ended up being twist fuckwits that started invading other dimensions because a talking snake told them to

>Gwyn was already dead by the time of Artorias's adventure.

I'm not sure, but you're probably right. Who was in charge then at the time? Since the knights seemed healthy enough, I imagine the gods still hadn't left and Gwyndolin couldn't give orders.

Real Gwynevere got married away, Seath was probably well on his way into batshit insanity, Frampt is a no go, and we don't talk about the Firstborn.

So I guess Lloyd or Ornstein?
>>
>>275106345
Most likely either Gwynevere or Gwynevere's illusion controlled by Gwyndolin.
