There are plenty of great western indie games if you go looking for them. There's just been a huge inflation of "indie" shovelware recently so you need to wade through a big pile of shit to get to them.
Japanese indie games on the other hand are already filtered for you. You only hear about the worthwile titles; the chance of someone mentioning some shit japanese-only indie game on the english speaking web is very low.

i don't really think there's any noteworthy differences between the western and eastern indie scenes. the reason there are seemingly so many good eastern games compared to westerns is because they are the only ones worth exporting and translating.
i doubt, for instance that many easterners know about Gone Home or Dear Esther as they simply aren't worth exporting.
Most of the "lol so retro" games are actually excuses for not having real artists on board. Or other times it's like pic where the artist is just a retarded pretentious cunts.

Well yeah, there's also the "making it actually look like games did on the console we're imitating" crowd, but they're few and far between. I can really only think of La-Mulana and Shovel Knight for that category.

I'd hardly call Dwarf Fortress a roguelike (unless you're playing Adventurer Mode for whatever reason). I'd be extremely surprised if a game like Dwarf Fortress is ever created in Japan or anywhere else really. My impression of doujin games as a whole is that they tend to create polished and exemplary games of an established template rather than bring out something as quite so inventive, which is part of why a great roguelike is probably unlikely.

No, fuck you m8, we've already surpassed that "ideal standards" long ago and your inability to scour for good western indie game with great graphics and production doesn't help.
Don't get me wrong, it's a decent game, but it's hardly a roguelike aside from the procedural generation, visuals, and turn-based combat, and if we were to go by that definition, then there would be an absolute fuck-ton of RPG Maker "roguelikes."

A lot(not all) western indies just want to get big and swim in money like the aaas.

The fact of the matter is that both regions have good and bad games, difference is, weebs have much lower standards than their western counterparts in all areas, so mediocre Jap games are praised as being amazing or great while mediocre western games are seen as mediocre or shit.

Japanese indie/doujin games, construction and design-wise feel closer to the games I've played from the generations of consoles I grew up with and are just more appealing aesthetically. Western contemporaries on average just aren't very interesting save a few.
Also, Japanese-made games just click with me more, there's something indescribable about them I really love despite not being as flashy as most western games.

There's no elitism anymore, which is sad. In the old days you used to see the poor dressing in suits and trying to be well spoken and read. Now, you see the rich and successful emulating "ghetto" people and speaking in ebonics (that shitty accent every black person, celebrity and teenager has). When the successful are copying the unsuccessful, you have a diseased culture. In Japan, everybody wants to be the best at their respective role in life. Even delinquents, they put a lot of effort into their knowledge of bikes and cars, their suits, their image and their hairstyles. In the West you basically just wear your pants around your ankles and act like a nigger.

Gone Home is really, really boring. I even thought the story was kind of cute in a way, but that didn't help me get through the unmerciful dullness. I have no comprehension of people who enjoy walking simulators like that.
I still think Shovel Knight looks ugly as sin. Actual NES games looked much better.
To be fair, shovelknight does a way better job at actually looking close to a pixelartstyle that actually existed.
Does the West have anything like Comiket? Seems like the biggest factor in Eastern indie games is a big convention that promotes creativity and commerce. Also helps that most Eastern creators give zero fucks about their work being used and sold by others since they all mostly do it for the love of creation instead of dosh mones.
Comiket is a massive copyright infringement event that was turned a blind eye because of the huge publicity it gives to the industry. Japanese publishers can't shut that down because the backlash will be too great and they will lose an important (free!) channel for publicity. If something like that was to start in the West, it has to start small, and small things are easier to crush. You can bet your ass the publishers will put a stop to it real quick.

A lot of doujinsoft is made to be sold at comiket and other such event. Other times, it'll be collaborative efforts within a team of artists and developers. Western indie games aren't very different, aside from the fact that there are fewer people that are willing to work in teams to meet the endgoal of having a good, fun game to play.

Hydorah, Daniel Remar's games in general (Iji, Hero Core, Hyper Princess Pitch, Garden Gnome Carnage, the strawberry game WHENEVER THE FUCK HE FINISHES IT), Spelunky, and many others were made entirely for free and are fantastic plays.

They are much uglier (in a technical sense, the design itself is usually good), have poor VFX, and gameplay very rarely makes up for it (though there are notable exceptions, like Touhou).
Also, they are stuck, technologically, like two generations back.

I wish I wasn't stupid, because I want to make a simple platformer game yet I'm finding it stupidly hard to comprehend coding. I spent several days trying to learn it, and I just couldn't absorb it.
I can do sprites, I can write dialogue, and if given the programs I could probably make music too, but I just can't wrap my head around coding.
There's also Sufferer from the same guy. It's a two parter, with one being an action RPG and the other being a stealth platformer.
I've tried learning Python, C++ or whatever it's called, and Java. Of course, I tried to be lazy and do drag and drop, but I know that's not the right way to make a game. It's A way, but not THE way.
I'll give that channel a watch though, because anything to help an idiot learn is valuable.

Just cause it isn't THE way doesn't mean you should exclude it. It still teaches you a lot of the core mechanics of programming and can translate easily into actual code once you get the hang of it. Programming is just like any other art, it doesn't matter what program or medium you use so long as you know the basic skills and techniques.
I would also suggest you play games with programming mechanics in them, such as Garry's Mod with Wire Mod installed, Minecraft with redstone mods, Terraria, Space Engineers, and there's surely more I either don't know of or have just forgotten.
