I guess, although in cases like that I would expect something like "taking Pokegirl requests" or "let's see some Overwatch requests", or something along those lines. After all, how would I know what games a particular person is familiar with or not? If my request doesn't get taken, then that's just how it is. I'm not going to limit myself to only Mario and Street Fighter just because those are the ones almost everyone will be familiar with.

Besides, for every person who wants to stick with just their familiar characters, there is one person who would prefer to work with characters they aren't familiar with at all because they've drawn all the familiar ones already.

So what's wrong with a quick summary of the character, the game they're in and the role they play? Even if an artist is unfamiliar with the character, such a teaser might be enough to be interested in it, and either draw it based on the references and description, or do a little more research and then draw it. Requests are like small "ads", they're trying to draw interest to make artists draw them. So I imagine it's important to have some thought put in a request, with a good description, good references, maybe even links to more references

What is a summary. Really, nobody's expecting to devolve into the whole world building junk the original game came with. General attitude and role is plenty. Remember, the purpose is to provide context for the request, not more. You can't express "muh backstory" in a drawing anyway. You sure can express though if the character's a daredevil, an introvert, a killing machine, a cool styler or what ever.
