Go for skills. The defense will even out through upgrading the armor. Whatever set you should be wearing should be determined by the skills you want, and beyond that (at least in my opinion) what you think looks cool that has the desired skills.

It's like monhun meets SoTC when fighting giant monsters, where you can be legolas, guts, a real fucking wizard (summon meteors, have glaciers erupt from the ground), and do lots of other really cool and fun shit, all while giving you the feeling of being on a grand adventure
it's flawed as fuck but worth every penny.
And on the subject of monhun, looking at everything that's been released, did they up the scale of monsters in 4/4G?
Everything looks bigger compared to the hunter, even things like great jaggis and kut-kus
Things that were maybe a bit bigger than a hunter are now 2x+ the size of a hunter and such

Nah, the problem is that those games are for the vita
which means that I am the only person outside of the one person in japan who owns and plays them.

Thing is none of them have been around for anywhere near the amount of time monhun has, so most are still getting on their feet

toukiden is trying to basically be streamlined monhun, but lacks content
SS is incredible story, characters, music, and build variety, but at the cost of kind of ehh gameplay compared to all other monhuns
and GE2RB may eventually come west maybe, hopefully, probably not

Monster Hunter is the only gaming franchise I know is going to be good when a new entry comes out.

Are Long Swords a viable choice in MH3u?

I started with Dual Blades, /v/ told me to wait until later on to use them so I'm using a GS (Golem Blade) right now, and I love it, but I want to mix it up a bit and I feel like the up coming underwater quests I'm going to have to do will be better with a Long Sword. I can craft that chain-saw LS.

For some idea of where I am: Quropeco was the last monster I hit. Up next is the Roray Ludroth, Wroggi and then I still have to trap that fucking Quropeco.

Yes but lots of people will make fun of you for using it because so many people play LS badly. LS has a few sweeping attacks that will trip people you're playing with, so you need to learn to not use those attacks around other people. LS's infinite combo (at least, the one I use) doesn't have any sweeping attacks and I don't use spirit gauge attacks unless I'm well away from other people.
