Super Mario World is like the definitive best 2D platformer of all time. Gorgeous and creative level design, a plethora of unique levels, a challenge, satisfying secrets, best music and of course, solid as hell graphics.
There's also Super Metroid, another contender.

I've heard one of the Mega Mans fit into this category too but I haven't played any to say.

Try Guacamelee. It is technically a Metroidvania, but it's pretty damn linear.

The freeware version. Cave Story + costs money, but has a worse translation, looks worse, and the music is worse.

people will argue against shovel knight but it's level design is actually great at teaching things to the player for the most part

play that and pay attention to how it introduces and eases the player into whatever concept/obstacles that particular level has

People who aren't nostalgic for classicvanias usual like all recent 2D Castlevania games, they're all mostly great. In fact, I'd say it's better to start with resent Castlevanias since it will deepen your appreciation for the previous titles if you ever get around to playing them.
