The Painted World is the only level that comes close to any of the levels from Demon's Souls, and that's only because it was made first when they had money.
I just wish there were more places like this and Ash Lake (not even near as playable, but with tons of effort in design and thought put into it) that just makes you stop a wonder for a while.
I was really expecting something close to it in DaS 2, only to be utterly dissapointed.

There's a hack that lets you use a crazy set of attacks that weren't implemented for some reason. Possibly meant to be included in future DLC.
It gives you crazy Heihachi move sets including a leg sweep, a fireball and a drop kick.

It's fucking radical. I think the leg sweep is always a cofirmed knock down, the kick hits multiple times and if you press L1 R1 RT RT you get a sick fast combo. And the fireball fucking HURTS.

Even the hollows do a lot of damage. Wheelskeletons will stunlock you to death if you're unfortunate.

Your eyes will get used to 30fps and then when you go back to 60 it'll be even glorious.

I'm a level 170 something and I always let them hit me and if they don't do too much damage I switch to thorn set and a wood grain ring to annoy them. it's hilarious getting invaded in the burg by some level 12 shitter doing 3 damage per hit
Blight Town is honestly my favourite, though I played through it on the PC version with no framerate drops.
Just the sheer atmosphere and the feeling of terror as you navigate the vertical maze of dilapidated town not knowing whether you'd be ambushed or not. And if you got invaded, well prepare for the most tense experience ever.
Firelink Shrine, the Catacombs, Undead Burg, Undead Parish, Darkroot Forest, the Depths, Blighttown, Sen's Fortress and Anor Londo might be the best designed world in any Metroidvania I've ever seen
Nearly every level is a straight line if you trivialize it like that. It has as much to explore as any other level.
It's the cool architecture and the intimidating hugeness that makes it good. Also the shortcut is pretty cool.

It's absolutely full of awful players right now, you should try it. I was mediocre at best at DaS PVP and in DaS2 I'm winning something like 9/10 fights. Hang out in the Belfries, they tend to be much easier than the arenas.

About finished my first playthrough, killed all the optional bosses and finished the dlc but I'm kinda freaking out. If I beat the last boss am I forced into NG+? I'd still like to run around and pvp a bit and stuff before my next playthrough but I do want to see the ending.
Yeah I loved that about Blighttown. I always thought it was night out, but then I looked up and realized that its still light out and the darkness iwas just from how deep you were in the ground. I also liked seeing the lower foundation and support structures of the Burg integrated into the level

Nah, Dark Souls had a lot of great locations, enhanced by their connectivity with eachother. DeS meanwhile was a place I remember having a couple of cool buildings but full of bland dark places with little in the way of scenery and especially lacking in variety.
Dark Souls 2 is just all over the place. A few places make me happy but it's a very few. Other places are way too straitforward or way too bland in their design. They tried to do the same all 1 map thing that Dark Souls 1 did, but it was extremely sloppy with geometry making no sense. For example, how the fuck did I reach the top of a windmill and then take an elevator up to a castle right outside a volcano? This shit has no build up.

I'm playing Demon's Souls and while the art direction is even better than Dark Souls, and the Tendency system is a neat idea that never really gets well executed, some technical problems and design concepts mar the experience for me.
And by this I mean the Allant fight - trudging back to him takes significant time due to powerful enemies you have to take on carefully, then there's an elevator ride and a humongous fps drop during the bossfight. On top of all, Miyazaki's idea of punishing the player is making the boss delevel him. This shouldn't be hard to avoid, but sometimes my inputs get all jumbly because the framerate confuses me, and he teleports his grab when my roll finishes, depleting souls. That and weapons like scraping spear are pretty pointless design. I don't want a game that introduces more tedious crap, I just want a challenge. And by tedious crap I mean anything to do with crafting. Holy shit, did the Monster Hunter do it well compared to any other game. Yes, I'm aware of Stockpile Thomas exploit but it would further ruin the experience. Getting ores is such a pointless chore though.
Except for MH, did any game do crafting well, and didn't just use it as padding? Because it's the worst element of Souls games.

Demon's Souls is way above Dark in terms of level design. And DaS 2 looks like something Blizzoware would make.
All of the Souls games are pretty close in quality, some excelling in certain areas more than others.

I play on ps3, and I get invaded at least once each level if I go through it unhollowed the entire time. The twink builds that constantly invade int he Perish get aggravating though. Because of that, every play through i do, I spend 1-3 hours jumping around to different high level areas to grab end game spells and gear, just so i have a fighting chance against invaders when i start doing the main quest thing. Like, I'll have wrath of the gods in the first hour or two of my faith build playthroughs.

Negro, I had some serious fucking issues with Tendencies. The difficulty would raise the more you died and that's the games basis. There was a point that I died that much at Valley of Defilement that I had to start a new save.
I get I can watch the endings elsewhere but it just doesn't feel right to put so many hours in and not finish the game myself.
Also, for a reroll character whats fun to play? Im just finishing up and the I mained heavy armor build with black knight greatsword for most of the game, was thinking about seeing if caster is any fun, something fast paced too maybe. Want to see if I can get into invincibility frames and parrying

I'm pure black character tendency and have no trouble with the game (except Allant) so far because I overleveled - not by grinding, it's just that Shrine of Storms gives a humongous amount of souls, and 1-3 and 1-4 are even more opulent.
Downloaded. It's very noticeable, especially when he comboes and I roll away from him. It does not render the game unplayable, but combined with his tankiness and the fact that around 28 hours in I still don't have a good STR weapon, it's all sorts of jarring. His moveset is fine, but some elements of that bossfight I highly dislike. He's the worst designed boss after Dragon God that I've met so far.

Capra is a much better bossfight than people give him credit for. It would be horrible if every boss was like Capra (die immediately, long walk back - this is the problem with La-Mulana) but he's a neat riddle piece on your first playthrough, really hectic. Stray Demon is also very good once you figure out what kind of damage he does.
Worst bossfight by far is Four Kings.
I'm convinced the download version has framerate problems. I've played EU and NA disc copies and had drops only when rolling into a load of junk, yet my friend who downloaded it complains about drops during all kinds of normal situations. He's usually very reliable about this stuff too.

Don't know, I borrowed a friend's PS3 and don't have a disc. Biggest framedrop was when Dragon flies to perch above gate before Allant, but that has no bearing on gameplay. I still haven't gone to the Valley of Defilement so I hope it won't be horrible there. Allant is just such a bad bossfight for me because I don't like the concept behind some of his moves, and since I evade everything drops in framerate make me a bit lost and/or bored/irritated.
Well they're not terrible but I didn't find them to be especially outstanding bosses anyway. I put Firesage and Stray in bad tier because they're the same as Asylum mostly, though maybe that's harsh on Stray Demon.

Kings are like a test in invincibility frames, and by introducing ADP stat whole series went to shit, I see them as a progenitor of this.

I haven't gone through all of DaS2 because it takes me forever with these type of games to beat them, but holy fuck does DaS2 have more levels than DaS1.
So far I haven't really felt like I liked a particular area, (I'm in The Gutter, it's the only great soul left I need to collect). This game feels like a collection of level ideas, regardless if they make any sense how they connect with each other. Some areas are extremely short, at times I wished that there was more to explore.
From what I've seen, Drangelic looks kinda cool, so I'll wait until I get there. Some of the DLC also looks kinda neat.
It should go without saying that Ornifex is the best NPC in the game and best girl as well.
The new DLC area in Iron Keep is fantastic, but I liked Aldia's Keep, the road to Dranglaic Castle (and the mirror knight fight area and hallway).
Gutter was kinda neat because it was one of the few areas they kept dark.
Heide's Tower of Flame was ok.
You're blindly implying that the skeletons in the big area don't come from both angles.
You can avoid it but if you're like me who likes to purge areas of monsters rather than past everything, maybe you can see my point.

DaS had places you could see in the distance that you could actually reach.
Das II had skyboxes that could look nice, but everything was connected by magical tunnels that spit you across the island like crazy. Example: stand in Majula and look towards Heide's Tower of Flame. You can see the cathedral and it's fucking tiny, but the walk to get there is deceptively short for how big it actually is.
Don't forget the invisible volcano and castle of Iron Keep
The core mechanics of Dark Souls 2 were an improvement without a doubt in my mind. The souls series has always made the combat better through trial and error. The areas were the sloppiest part for me. Soul level and covenant design were iffy as well. Boss design was very often also disappointing.
DeS did this the best. Most enemies had reason to be there and didn't just stand still. The best example would be the Mindflayer prison guards of Latria, but other enemies like miners in Stonefang all had activities

Yes. Attaching an actual stat to it was a change I actually liked. It made it feel less like your invincibility "get good" move for pros and more like a piece of a build you might go for.

Yeah I found it to be sort of jarring the way the areas were just sewn together like patchwork. The weather, lighting, terrain, everything just changes sharply as you go through a door. When you look at that map in the mansion it doesn't seem at all like you have travelled as far as is shown.
Nah, 4 Kings design was a clusterfuck of spikes and twisty shit, it was far too busy and overdesigned. The magic attacks looked pretty generic too. And having every one of them look identical is lazy, as is making the arena just pitch black (yes, I know it's the Abyss, but come on).
All the souls games are easy as fuck, people just don't realize it because they're playing for gamer cred and refuse to use more than one weapon despite having 4/6 whole slots for equipment on the fly and an infinite number of inventory slots after Demon Souls.
I just beat the Fool's Idol but apparently it just keeps coming back to life. Am I missing something or is this just something to go back to later on?
