I know. I was playing online before I managed to 3-star Mirror Mode. It took awhile to complete it, and was especially bad in places like Bone Dry Dunes, where you were making some blind turns.

Cheat codes, sure. If there's modern equivalents to Game Genie and the like, I'm not aware of their existence.

I feel like unlockables have been sullied. In MK8, for example, half the playable roster--all of whom were heavily featured in marketing--are "unlockable." They're locked arbitrarily. Even the sense of being rewarded is diminished by the fact that the unlockables themselves are randomly selected, and the process in which you unlock them is merely "earn enough coins/points at X intervals," diminishing the sense of accomplishment.

I get that the conditions for locking are simple so that simpler/younger players can gain access to everything, but if accessibility is a concern, why not just have them all available to start with?

I really liked the home version of SF Alpha 3's approach to unlockables. Earn them immediately by performing specific tasks of varying difficulty--if you can't be arsed to get gud, they'll be unlocked via timer eventually. You could earn them if you wanted, but if you didn't want to/couldn't, you'll still get them eventually.

He has the basic idea down, and he's still right even though he worded it wrong, if you attempted to run a Wii U game on a PS4, it wouldn't be able to brute force its way to 1080/60, it'd have to be properly coded for the PS4 hardware, and the same goes for that other person's comparison, an X1 or PS4 game would run terribly if it wasn't properly coded for the hardware.

He went about the argument wrong, the point should be that the strive for amazing graphics is self-defeating because of the constantly advancing nature of graphics hardware, as well as the ability to further learn the hardware and tricks specific to the hardware used so you can squeeze more out of it, as well as the fact that these games will not age well, in 10 or 20 years we'll look back and wonder how they looked good. With Nintendo's limited graphics processing power, you end up with games that are more or less timeless, thanks to the art style not relying on amazing graphics to look good, and this is especially true for games that aren't on the cutting edge of graphics to begin with. Look at something like Zombi U compared to Mario 3D World, one will look great 10 years from now, one will look, and in fact currently does look awful.

The problem with games like Mario Kart 8, among other Nintendo games coming out are that they are starting to veer closer to realism, so things like jaggies and resolution actually affect how their games look a lot more than they used to, and they get around that by going with a phenomenal framerate instead. In 10 years, we'll laugh at how bad a graphics-intensive game looks, but the framerate won't become outdated, the game will still play like an absolute dream, especially considering that there isn't a massive push for 60 FPS right now for whatever reason, with many developers content to hit 30 locked or 40-50 unlocked, a game with a solid, locked 60 framerate will stand above the rest, even if the graphics aren't quite as up to par.

Anyone can win a race with any setup. Being in the 2nd best setup gives you that much leeway for being bad while still winning. I'm sorry to tell you, but needing to play as a Cruiser+ to win means you're shit. I've won races as Baby Daisy with 1.5 speed (or maybe it was 1, either way I went for 5 accell because I could). It's like Melee tiers. Sure, a lower tier can win, but they have to put in much more effort. The only difference is that MK has RNG, but MK8 fucks that up by giving people mushrooms constantly (which benefit Heavies much more than anyone else). This game was balanced for Cruiser+ because Nintendo is retarded.

How do I try harder to win when I'm cutting corners as close as possible, getting shitty 1 mushrooms in 7th, and when I'm in the lead I usually get bomblasted 2-3 times in a row. I also try to get my coin count high but it seems like it's never enough. What am I doing wrong?

Drive in straighter lines. Seriously. The lane you take is probably the biggest factor in how well you do.

Use items defensively, not aggressively. If you have something that can be used as a shield, try to overtake your opponent through driving rather than tossing an item.

Possibly not taking shortcuts or the shortest route. Item usage could be bad, too. Make sure that your accell equals a whole number for maximum min-maxing and pray to the RNG gods. Time Trials is a good place to learn tracks. Watch top players, learn to firehop (though if you are playing a Cruiser+ and firehopping online, you are going to be hated for being a tryhard faggot).
