Pro tip - it wasn't.

All "optimisation" shit consolefags brag about is usually cutting corners, if you can't render Knack player character at decent pace - you have to "optimise" it - which means - reduce the number of polygons and add particle effects instead, use sprites for small shards etc. Good studios don't release engines with holes that hamper the performance, so all they can do is to use various techniques that don't use too much power but somewhat work.
Unless they're some kind of maniacs and write the engines in assembly but it's rare thing outside of handhelds.
