Yes. The focus of the gameplay is fighting other players. It has many characters with a wide variety of moves like a fighting game. It has a competitive scene like a fighting game. It has match ups like a fighting game. The game labels itself as a fighting game. It's a fighting game.

And no, Sakurai calling it a party game doesn't make it not a fighting game because genres aren't fucking mutually exclusive, so stop bringing it up and acting like it means something. :)

It's a game that has fighting in it, that would make it a fighting game, but by that logic, most games are fighting games.

Platform fighter is pretty good to distinguish its gameplay from others in the fighting genre.

Now I'm not going to argue that Super Smash Bros. is a fighting game or not (BTW it's a party fighting game faggots), that's horrible logic that a game is automatically a fighting game if it has fighting. Going by that logic, Gauntlet is a fighting game because you fight, or Legend of Zelda is a fighting game because you also fight.

The real question is can a game be two different things?

Sakurai says it's a party game. It is. I play it at parties with people. There's certainly an appeal with a group of friends duking it out as Nintendo all stars.

That said, the goal of the game is all about physical altercations with the intent to send each other to a blast zone and lose a stock.

So the game is a party fighter. It's not traditional, it's not a standard genre. Think of it like some kind of indie rock for video games.
