It takes considerable amount of time to realize superiority. After all, soldiers kept running to machine guns for years in WW1, and for example, Hitler didn't like the idea of a semi-automatic rifle. People doubted Maxim machine guns too at first. As for if Finnish guns were superior, the m/26 was kinda special because it could use a 75rd drum mag - in 1926. I don't know of any other LMG that could do the same at that point in time. MG 34 is sometimes credited for being the father of LMGs, but the m/26 could've done the same years earlier. Of course, there were flaws like the number of parts and the small clearances.
